Hi umfundisi and K7777777,

Thanks for your posts. Your extra effort to call SIMS office and then putting informative posts were really helpful.

LAPTOPS: Even I had problem of choosing laptops few months back. So, I did a complete market survey in bangalore and chandigarh. And following were the findings:
  • DELL laptops are the best in the market. It provides some cools features at affordable price. ROI is best!!
It has vastro, inspiron and studio series.
    1. Vastro is for business people. This laptop is best in performance at around 33K price range. Doesn't look classy but comes with 2 years complete warranty.
    2. Inspiron is in range of 35-42K. Its more than a year old series and offers good performance at much affordable price.
    3. Studio is around 45K+ is one of the new revelation of dell. High on performance and better sleek look.
One of the best thing about dell is 24/7 anywhere in India onsite warranty. So everytime you have a problem dump your worries on them. Price variation is low, so you can buy it from any city. Most of the Dell series can be customised as per individual needs.
  • HP is just behind, they are offering same things at little higher price but with goodies. HP, look wise is OK, performance wise good.
  • If you want to enjoy the laptops (and sometime show off too) go for DELL XPS, Sony Vaio, Mac Air (in increasing order of price). ::New:: The Dell Adamo (derived from the Latin word that means "to fall in love with"), is elegant in its thin profile and luxuriously intoxicating to look at. But wait for it, dell has a reputation of slashing its prices. (My dell laptop now cost 1K less )
  • On the other end we have Acer and HCL which provides international options at desi price. Don't forget to check them out!!
  • I wont recommend Apple Noteboks because of compatibility, service and driver issues.

  • You can go for a laptop recce in your market before college offers. So that you are in a better position to compare odds, although going by the adamant pricing of laptop I don't expect much variation there.
Remember: You have the power of choice!!

I hope, it will help you. If anyone want to draw in other reviews, suggestions, criticism, discussion, logical or grammatical mistakes... I am open to all.

Cool regards (Not warm regards, its already hot out there)

Wrong orientation primer!! - 20-04-2009, 08:15 PM

Hi Friends,

By mistake Orientation primer-08 was posted on the website. I have sent them the email regarding the same. The link looks different and now offers 'orientaion letter' only. Anyway, I have downloaded all the material (wrong ones). They will update the website soon.

Respected Sir,

I am Vikas (SNAP id:1050506), an MBA aspirant joining SIMS-PGDM(09/11) batch.

I would like to bring to your notice that 'Orientation Primer' that was provided to us is old and of batch 08/10. Few documents that seems old are attached below. To add to my surprise, even the orientation letter by the Directors has given orientation Duration - 'Two weeks commencing 16th June ’08'.

On behalf of batch 09/11, May I request you update the site with the Orentation primer for the PGDM-09/11 batch.

Also coursesoordinator@sims.edu email id provided on the website (sims.edu) seems to be wrong. Please do the needful.

Thanks a lot!!

Best regards,

Documents:
1.Orientataion LETTER.
2 Complete Orientation Primer 2008.
3. The Pundit: 19th may 2008 edition
Keep watching the space for the latest.

Regards
Vikas

Hi K7777777,

Pundit is a pdf that seems to carry a monthly update of anything under the sun (management sun ). They have three co-ordinators. May08 edition has 28 pages and few topics that were discussed are (with synopsis):
Quote:
  • Smart Strategies: The Apple of my eyes
Sometimes the success of a company and its founder get intertwined. TP makes a chronology of major policy decisions (in hindsight successful) of Apple right from OS X to the iPhone.
  • Credit Default Swaps
Ever wondered how the lending agencies calculate risks? Bhagyashree tells us. CDS are instruments which are used to transfer credit risks i.e. non payment by the other party.
  • IPL: Is it worth all the attention?
The latest slam-bang version of cricket, the IPL, is being hailed as a shot in the arm of the dignified side of the gentlemen’s game. Sakshi counterviews the commercial take.
  • Cultural Obsolescence
The rise to greatness comes with its fair share of decadence. There are prices to be paid but at what cost are we ready to imbibe a reality that’s not truly us. Arun pens down thoughts that cling when touring a modern India.
  • Shades of Grey.
Nothing really is ever white or black only. There are always the shades of grey. Sudeep says that the curious thing about our world is that it sort of shies away from uncertainty. However, it is our purpose and duty to seek answers.
  • Investment Options and Caution
Chitra continues on from where she left in the previous edition. This time she talks about the various investment vehicles: fixed-income securities, stocks, mutual funds among others.
A carnivorous look of the pages makes it eye catcher. Simple and candid writing makes it easy to grasp. The essence is for MBA, by MBA.

Happy reading later.
