Re: SJMSOM GP/PI Experience 2009 - 12-03-2009, 08:17 PM

My slot was on 9th morning, 7:30 am
Background
From Kerala
X,XII-85 (ISC)
B.tech-67%
Work-ex: 16 months as marketing mgr of a start up IT firm

GD: 12-13 ppl

Case: It was a business development case study

TCS is planning to become on the top 10 consulting companies in the world by 2012(or somethin close to tht). For that they have to achieve 60% growth rate consistently to the target period.

It has launched some programs like identifying leaders within the comp and empowering the ppl in the org. They also have a mentorship program. But the problem they have is that there is only 1 mentor for many, so its difficult.

Now TCS is also feeling the effects of the economic slowdown, there are some non-performing workers, n they dont want to fire ppl coz of the TATA image, so recruiting has also taken a hit further due to this(already bad due to slowdown)

They are also hiring fresh graduates from IIMs so that they can be a marketing driven firm.

Questions
Q1.Other than empowerment, what other strategies can TCS employ to increase its productivity?
Q2.Other than hiring IIM students, what else can be done to make it a marketing driven firm?

Analysis: It was a good GD, there were only 2 or 3 fish market situations.
We mostly discussed abt the improvement which can be done to increase productivity like increasing work hours, billability problems, and moving into other fields.

I came in 5-6 times, 2 times with new points, but sadly no one carried forward my points.

Interview: Two professors, one was Tech management prof(P1) and other a FIN professor(P2),both had loads of industry experience (told to me by seniors)

P1:Tell abt yourself in brief
A: Told my place, the schooling, my stream in coll, things which is did in coll lik organizing, aftr coll why i joined a start-up firm
P1:What is your company into
A: I told Mobile Value added services
P1:So what exactly does your comp do
told all things and products
P1:He asked me mre questions and he told me that he was trying to learn (which i thought was a good sign)
A: Told a lot of things about company (forgot 2 mention my company won the NASSCOM 'best startup award' in Dec 2008 )

P1:But isnt this what mobile service providers like Vodafone gives you
A: I told that it is, but it is our company which gives Vodafone this material
he seemed surprised by this n asked me that he jus used Vodafone as an example, all i cud say was tat vodafone was our biggest customer
P1.He askd me what my value proposition was
A: I did not understand what 'value proposition' was, so i told him, he explained a bit and i answered properly.
P1. More questions on what kind or market i target, busisness or individual
A: Explained with examples in each case
P2. What is size of company
A:Told in terms of ppl and turnover (P2 seemed really surprised at the amt (it is big 4 a startup)
P2:Why do you think there is lack of industrial grwth in Kerala
A: I told bout govt probs are the main thing and example of govt bunglin and corruption
P2:But corruption is there everywhere
A: I told every 5 yrs govts change and new govt has totally diverse views on every situation, so basically its the fault of the ppl.
P2 and P1:asking abt mre info abt NRI Keralites and their contribution and stuff
A: told
P2.Do you thnk givin land for free is justified
A: Told it is if they can develop infra and provide employment opps jus lik SEZs provide opportunities(P2 reminded me tat SEZs don get land free)

Till now everything was going fine
Now the technical
P1.What is condition for sampling
A: I told Nyquist criteria and stuff
P1. More questions abt aliaising and stuff
A: Gave ans but he did not seem convinced (i knew wat i was sayin was right, but i also knew i did not remember deep into the topic)
P1.What overlaps
A: I said frequency, then 2 seconds l8r i said its not, n said i dont knw (it was frquency) :(
P1:How do you convert time domain to freq domain
A: I was almost sure it was Fourier transform, but the apprehension abt not answering previous q properly tol me to be on the safe side n not bluff, so i said i dont knw, n he tol me it was indeed Fourier... i was really cursin myself
P1.How do u convert a signal W(s) to freq domain
A: i told the fourier transofrm equation, he did not seem convinced, n tol me "so you are aware there is some eqn"...i answered yes ( later checked and the equation i told was right)
P2. You have won first place in a national level comp, what is it
A: Told it was a national level gamin tournament(he didn’t seem too impressed)
P2> U were the coordinator of a technical state event, what is it
A: It was a technical event conducted by Computer Society of India (CSI)
No explanations were asked :(
P2.ok madhav, you may leave, but P1 interrupted..
P1.Why is it called cellullar n/w
A: tol him it was bcoz it is represented as hexagonal cells
P1. But why
A: The systems are designed to cover that cell
P1.But why cell
A: I dont know
P2. You may leave...thank you

Whew, the sad part was that i knew the technical question, but i guess lack of temperament did me in that part. If i dont make it i will really curse myself, it was not a question of i could hav done better, I Should have done better coz i knew the answers.

Anyway it was the best process i was part of, the walkie talkies were inspired . Hats off to all seniors, they came upto ppl and gave loads on info on IITB and also bout the diff specialties and info abt operations(which is wat i want to do) Thanx to madhavi, tony, ajit, vinay, phani, pramit and last but not least srikant (he was looking really tired by the afternoon)

Re: SJMSOM GP/PI Experience 2009 - 13-03-2009, 05:50 PM

Slot : 8th March 7:30 AM
PANEL A (12 ppl)

Profile:
Work-Ex : 21 months IT experience with Accenture
Engg: Computer Science

The best thing about the process was it was the most coordinated thing possible and the seniors were all very friendly. Special thanks to Pallavi and Mukul for their help.

Now the experience

GD: Case study about a manager Raju giving wrong statements to his team. GD was a bad fish market.

PI:
Same panel as in GD ie. P1(IIT Bombay Alumni), P2: Lady Prof at IIT,B , P3: Industry Person

P1: So how was ur stay in Punjab? (My graduation is in Punjab)
Me: Very Good sir
P1: How is ur college? The Best?
Me: Very Good
P1: what is the difference between Chennai and Chandigarh environment?
Me: Sir, chandigarh is more student oriented and a place for retired people. Chennai is better for growth prospects. Chandigarh the day ends at 8:30 PM , In Chennai , we can see work going on 24/7 specially on the IT highway still Chandigarh is closer to my heart as I did my college from there
P1: So Meghna, what kind of a girl are u? Fun type? or serious type?
Me: Fun type. I like being serious when it is work but otherwise I like having fun. I like going out with friends. I like watching movies.
P1: so which was the last movie u watched?
Me: slumdog Millionaire
P1: so U liked it?
Me: yes Sir, The direction of the movie is really good. The slums of Dharavi have been projected in a very unique way and the acting of all the young children is brilliant.
P2: Do u think projecting India like this is fine?
Me: Yes Ma'am. I dont think there is anything wrong in it. Everyone recognises India to be a global power today so there is no point hinding the problems. Today schools from UK are ready to sponsor the children in Indian slums because of this movie. So it is definitely not bad.
P1: So what have u been working on at Accenture?
Me: told
P1: any supervisory work involved?
Me: Told
P2: What are the effects of recession on Accenture?
Me: Sir as such Accenture has not been affected much. The major difference is that the environment has been made more competeitive specially for the young people.
P3: What is the revenue of Accenture?
Me: Told
P3: What is it for Chennai centre?
Me: Accenture doesnt have policies to calculate it separately.
P1: so how much ambitious are you? where would you like to see yourself after 25 years?
Me: Sir, somewhere like Indra Nooyi. But except from professionally I want to grow personally and would like to contribute to the society in some way as I have been doing in my past.
P2: What social activities you have been involved in?
Me: Told
P1: so your father is a manager? Where? Did he do MBA?
Me: Told
P2: Which specialization u would like?
Me: I like IT and marketing allures me but I would take this decision after 1st year.
P1: So Do u read? what books
Me: Yes Sir, I do read. Generally what people recommend or something good I come across
P1: Last book u read?
Me: Blue Ocean Strategy
P1: What did u learn?
Me: the importance of value innovation. and how divergence, focus and tagline help organizations to create a new market and not fighting for space in the old market
P1: how is it applicable to India?
Me: Foreigners are very interested in Indian stuff so if the bangle market at Firozabad could market it for them , then it would bring a lot of exports.
P1: There is 1 company that is doing it
Me: No Sir, I have no idea
P1: What is the problem of India?
Me: Lack of focus with the youth. Majority population is in the age group 24 -35 and very less percentage is focused. People in UP are still not ready to look for better avenues and opportunities outside to grow so they are a burden on country's resources.
P2: Difference between BASIC and C
Me: Told features of C?
P2: U have never studied BASIC?
Me: No ma'am
P1: what do u work on?
Me: mediation Tool
P2: what languages have u read in college?
Me: C/ C++ ,VB.NET
P2: differences between C/ C++
Me: Told
P3: Any Achievements in office?
Me: Told
P3: what other options u had from campus placement?
Me: Tech Mahindra
P3: Why did u choose Accenture?
Me: Sir, I know Tech M would have also given me a lot of opportunities but I wanted a broader platform and I wanted to learn in a multinational company.
P1: Since whwn have u been planning for MBA?
Me: sir since my 10th standard
P1: So whay not MBA just after college
Me: Sir, Today I feel I m in a better position as I have the flexibility to get moulded like a fresher because of two years experience and not 5 - 10 years in 1 industry and I have much better understanding of business and the importance of customer satisfaction.
P1: which other calls
Me: Told
P1: So IIT B ur first prefernce
Me: yes, every1 laughs and Thank Yous

RESULT : CONVERTED

Re: SJMSOM GP/PI Experience 2009 - 13-03-2009, 07:44 PM

Hi All,
Sorry for posting late.....mere manager ne aate hi chamkaa diya mujhe :happybday:....

Neways

GD/PI date- 8'th March, 2009, afternoon slot
Panel C ( C

Profile-
X: 86.8 CBSE
XII: 83.2% CBSE
Undergrad Major - GPA/%age: B.Tech.(Mechanical) 8.92/10 NIT Bhopal.
Work profile :
Number of years: 21 months as of now
Sector/Industry: CSC, Noida

GD- Gd was a case study involving a supervisor allocating a person XYZ to lead a team of 8 people. Those 8 guys are nuts, they dont work , involved in wrong activities etc . XYZ tried to tell them, but he was given threat to either leave the job or live the way they are living. Shankar dada , their leader say to XYZ-" If you would have worked here for long, you too would have become like one among us "

We had to discuss about the importance of supervisor here, and the implications of shankar dada's statement.

I started the GD. It was such a mixed group. One guy was speaking at the top of his voice, seemed like the coaching classes taught him to dominate others .....but if I would have been a panelist, he was the 1'st person to be ousted.....and on the other hand there was one guy who didnt utter a word, even when the panelists asked him to conclude . Overall 5/10 for the GD. I will not rate myself coz I perfectly know that a GD is a group task actually, so if the group goes wanky, even if u do gud,u r gone....

neways, my PI experience

prof 1(p1), prof 2(p2), me (m)

p1- So Indrajoy, Introduce urself?
m- ae lo ji, abhi suno tussi
p2- What is ur goal in life, professional goal?
m- blah blah, somewhat they convinced, somewhat not
p1- Are u sure u can achieve it by doing MBA?
m- yes sir, gave gyaan
p2- Ohk, first Mech, then IT, now MBA....whare is the link and ur goal , thats also quite unconventional....
m- Told them that in engg, it was not only acads, but learnt a lot many things, comp being MNC, so learnt organizational skills, all in all have got few skills with me, now MBA is the platform to set it all up...etc etc
p1- If I put a contemporary engine with different fuel.. will it work?
m- No sir, we have to do some modifications on it, etc etc
p2- What is lapping ?
m-, sorry sir, dont know
p2- how many types of tolerances?
m- areh yaar , jo padh ke nahi aaya, wohi pooch lo !!@@###@!!:crazyeye:
Sorry sir, I cant recollect now.
p1, almost dozing off, one eye closed,,,bahut neend aa rahi hai kya sirji,,,,,itna boring bhi nahi hoon ....isse pehle to koi soya nahi
p2- Why SJMSOM?
m- blah blah
p1- Tell me about ur achievements
m- bakar bakar for 10 mins on that , argument counter-argument etc etc .....
p1- Okay Indrajoy, Thanks for being at SJMSOM
m- The pleasure was all mine sir.

Thats it, took off from the skybridge hostel,,,caught train, back to noida the next day....

I hope it turns out to be a happy journey.

Cheerz!
TBA!!!

Re: SJMSOM GP/PI Experience 2009 - 21-03-2009, 07:20 AM

Ok here goes my SJMSOM GD/PI experience....
And since I'm posting it so late...pardon me, i might've forgotten some ques or their ans....

GD/PI Slot: 7.30 A.M 6th March
Panel: Prof Patwardhan(P) and Prof Trupti Mishra

Profile:
X : 84.2%
XII : 86.2%
Undergrad Major - GPA/%age: B.Tech.(Computer Engineering) 8.45/10 NIT Jaipur.
Work profile :
Number of months: 21 months as of now, and I did a 2 month internship at IITB too.
Sector/Industry: Telecom R&D, PSU

GD- Gd was a case study involving a lady, who is shifted to a new office, where her supervisor first doesn't allocate her any work for the first week, and tells her that they're soon going to get a big project, and tells her that she'll get work on Monday of the next week. Because he was busy with a meeting for the finalization of the new project, he is late for his meeting with this lady. Then comes and gives her some work, demonstrates it, she also tries a few times. He then makes her Quality Supervisor. After a week, several problems with the lady's batch is discovered.

There were 2 questions related to the case:
1. What was the problem with the whole process
2. If you had been in manager's position what would you have done to improve her performance.
<something along these lines> :P

The GD was decent I was the second entrant. WE discussed alot of points, about Quality standards etc. But after a while we ran out of points i guess.
In the middle panelist asked one person, who hadn't spoken much till that point to summarize, this other chap sitting next to me started, but then panelist interrupted him saying they had asked the other person, he was ok. After that we were asked to resume our discussions.
In all i guess i made 3-4 entries. Overall decent GD.

neways, my PI experience

prof P, T and me

P - So you worked at IITB what was that project about?
me - blah, blah
P - You're working as a Research Engineer......etc etc...What benefit do you hope to get from this course?
me - blah blah, decision maker.....
T - You mean the top of organization....
me - Blah Blah......
P - Ohk, how do you think this volunteer work helps. <I do some volunteer work with an NGO>
me - One feels great....
P- Not on a personal level, i mean on a larger perspective....
me- have made diff, 200 people each affects 10 other people, 2000 people affected....
P - Ok, So how do you think you're company is doing? <or something on those lines>
me - We did great first, lost focus in the middle, now again back on track.....blah blah...
P - So how did your company do great at first.
me - Telecom revolution ..... Told abt two products.... A & B....ubiquitous PCOs
P - What are A & B?
me - So and So,tell full form, checked later found found full form of B incorrect.
P- How many lines do they have?
me - said something, though confidently, later checked found that to be incorrect too.
P - How did ubiquitous PCOs help, and how did you bring them out.
me - said something abt ubiquitous PCOs..was alright..faltered a bit over how did we bring them out...
P - Ok, Do you know the Telecom density in India.
me - Problem with multiplication, :( said one tenth of the actual no.
P- raises eyebrows really...
me - Sorry sir, I don't know...
P- Now come on think how can it be this..... Can you tell me the number of mobile subscribers?
me - Again a figure one tenth of the actual figure....
P - Really?
me- Sorry Sir, I don't know..

There were a couple of more questions..on my current company scenario...and our new product<because i mentioned that>.....but this was largely it.... I hope it helps future call getters...

@Seniors/AdCom: Thank you for your unbridled support. Esp Mukul, Pallavi, Raveesh, Srikanth, Kunal. Thank you all of you. You made the entire process so much easier for us. And set high standards for the som11 batch

Besties!
