gd was one of the most peaceful ones i have ever seen. No fighting or fish market scenario.
The interview began with me. I am a fresher so no questions related to work exp or why i wantu mba and all. My questions began with some fundamental electrical questions like

1. Difference between electrical and electronics?
2. DIff between AC n DC
3. DIff between analog and digital
4. Conversion from HEX to BINARY
5. Which is more dangerous AC or DC
6. rest questions were based on the gd as i was in favour of the topic.
7. Then asked me to chalk out a way of protesting against college management if students have some problems with the management. i guess i impressed them with this one.
8. One of them asked me to consider him as a layman and then explain inheritance to him. ( Again impressed i guess )

Yeah one piece of advice

When u answer questions on tech streams they may say that ur answer is wrong, but don lose heart coz they are probably testing ur confidence.
If anyone has any queries please post.....

And yeah they never touched my certificate file or asked for CV. But its better to be on the safer side and carry them with u.
Best of luck to all of u out there
How much time is the entire process taking..And do you have any idea about the average time for the interviews ?

Re: [2009] XIMB GD/PI Experiences thread - 05-03-2009, 12:02 PM

Well, this is my first ever b school GDPI experience, and my only one this season

Your Profile
X-93.8,XII-97.5,UG(B.Tech IT, MIT, AU)-7.5
Work Ex-Nil

XAT Score (preferably with split-up)
Quants-92.x,VA 90.X LRDM 94.x OA 96.87

GD Topic:- Every nation gets the leader it deserves( 1 minute to think, 7 minutes to discuss, and another 1 minute to summarize)
Went okay..good group..almost everyone contributed..i got into the GD some 4-5 times. Democracy, dictatorship etc were discussed.

PI experience (preferably detailed)
Well there were three interviewers-I'll call them A, B and C.
A:Hello Hari, tell me about yourself
me: Told
A:I want you to ask you something about politics. Our PM recenly was hospitalized due to illness. So was the CM of TamilNadu. Yet they were making decisions and carrying on. Is that fair?
Me: Yes sir, they might be physically ill, but that would not affect their decision making capabilities. So i don't find anything wrong with that.
A: Politicians carry on till well after 80. But employees in government offices have to retire at 58. Don't you think that's unfair.
Me: Sir in politics it takes time to rise to high posts. That's why politicians are on the older side. But in corporates one can grow quickly.
A: So you don't feel there should be an age limit for politicians?
Me: No sir, I don't.
A: But by that argument fixing retirement age at 58 is unfair.
Me: Yes it it's not fair. It is one's capability that should be looked at and not age.
A:Then why is an age limit fixed?
Me: Possibly to encourage youngsters sir.
A: The same can apply to politics as well
Me(:(): Sir as i said in politics it might not be possible for young people to have important posts straightaway. Even if a PM is 45-50 years old, he would be called a young PM.
A: So shall we have a timeframe? At 25 years one should be here, at 30 years he should go to the next level, and so on?
Me: That's very rigid and might not work. Maybe we can use ranges of ages, like 25-30, 30-40 etc.
(A is done with me)
B: Ok Hari, wat's economis liberalization?
Me: Sir it means that the country will have private players, foreign players etc in business, and corporate India will no longer be controlled by govt. alone.
B:You mean there were no foreign companies in pre-liberalization India?
Me: :( Maybe there were in certain sectors sir.
B: Ok, what is services sctor?
Me:Told(not very accurately though :()
C:Ok what are ur hobbies?
Me: Novels, music..
C:What kind of music?
Me:Tamil films' music
C:Ok do u know of the music director who recently won Oscars
Me:Yes sir. A.R.Rahman
C:What categories did he win in?
Me: Told
C:Ok thank you, u may leave.

Well, it was a bit dicey overall. Chances of converting are low. Anyways..ATB to everyone

Can you also mentions few of the points discussed in your GD ??
Also are you working ... any clue what kind of question they are asking from people with work ex ??
I had work-ex for a year, quit my job last July, joined Dad's business. They wanted to know the advantages of being an entrepreneur(freedom, flexibility, gas gas).
The points we discussed in our GD were:
1) IIM grads looking at entrepreneurial opportunities in days where employers are paying less/not recruiting(Read this book: "Stay Hungry Stay Foolish" - shud give some insight on entrepreneurship)
2) MBA is more about making meaning than making money.. gas gas
3) Knowledge gained
4) Learning how to run a business completely thru the different subs that were taught. (I had quoted a few subjects from the MBA syllabus so the panel asked me about it in my interview- I told them that it's given in the prospectus! lolzz)

That's pretty much it, mate. Ping me on gtalk whenever: rocketjockster is the ID.

Regards,
Abhishek

GD Topic -
Gd topic was.. Can technology help reduce corruption ?
gd topics on the prev day were.. "Beauty and brains do not go well together" and "industries on moon"

Gd was gud. It wasn't at all a fish market. 1 slot me bas ek grp.. so ... ek achi rapport ho chuki thi waiting rum me..... 1 min to think * mins to discuss and 1 min for a member to summarise..
Everyone chipped in with their points.. i entered 3 times.. Obama wala online campaign thoda bola... jaago re thing.. Tehelka thing... and hw e voting and
e-allotment of funds can mitigate chances of corruption.
BUT ultimately corruption breeds in the psyche of an individual so there is a limit to which technology can mitigate corruption...

one guy summarised well..

PI experience (preferably detailed) : around 45 mins after gd.
entered the room - P1 - a prof. ; P2 - prof. M1 - ma'am.
Greeted them all- (ma'am first and then sirs )

P1 lookin at my XAT form) so tell us smething about yourself.. wat do u do in ur leisure and ur hobbies etc.. (Inshort, gave me a green signal to fir all my missiles :angel
me:- told abt my interests and hobbies, creative writing, wtaching movies listening to music, reading books pref. non-fiction ,etc also spoke abt my achievements ..
One was a BPLAN that we had prepared..finalist at iit kgp khshitij '08.
forex trading etc.. (expected that i wd be grilled on trading fundas.. but lickily no :tongue

P1:- ok so u have varied interests gud..

P1:- so wat does B in the Bplan mean ?
me:- Business
P1:- so tell me the outline of a bplan
me:- told them abt the basic structure -
P1:- wats is the difference between a revenue plan and a revenue model
No , though u'll learn these things here () but since u have done a Bplan .. thats y ..
me:- Sir , i do not exactly but revenue model describes the basic sources and nature of revenue for any business... like in case of Google the advertisement plan... etc but a revenue plan is implementing a revenue model suitable for ur business... revenue model hence is a part of the enitre revenue planning process (Naive answer but they looked convinced :tellme
P1:- wat is a Business model ..
me:- explained again in a naive fashion .. example of Ford.
M1 :- She had the XAT essay in her hand.. asked me to explain a word in the first sentence,, and my style of writing 'g'. Nothing at all abt the essay

P2 was almost silent through out..
P1:- ok so u are from CSE background.. u must be knowing Data Structures ?
me:- yes sir.
P1:- explain me some data structures..
me: said tree, stack.queue, etc.
P2:- tell us some implementations of these..
me:- cd rack real world analogy of stack... Sir wat i have read are the various algorithms that implement these data structures...
explained them Breadth First Search and Depth first search and sme algos for arnd 10 mins.. they seemed happy and ok ..
P2:- asked me abt my XAT and CAT %les
me :- told
M1:- ok thank you ..
me : thank you ma'am thank you sirs..

WORK EX guys are asked abt their work ex but guys in my slot were asked some MATHS ques like equation of a parabola, external angles = which 2 angles ?, trignometry, 2d etc..

the whole process tokk hardly 1 hr 15 mins.. gud 1 :sly:

No need to carry any xerox etc.. just carry your documents and the call letter and score card... even that was nt chked ...
panel was cool .. hardly any stress factor...

No scenario is hopeless. You can always say that you decided to interpret the topic in a different way. You will be asked why or how. Lead the panel to where you are comfortable.
