Re: [2009] XLRI GD/PI Experiences - BM and PMIR - 23-02-2009, 06:19 PM

Had my interview tody at Rain Tree Chennai. It was more of a PG Meet almost all are puys s. Okay Il start my experience.

Course applied : BM (Didnt apply PMIR) sos may b i was not asksed abt it.
Profile

Xth : 91.5%
XII : 94%
B-Tech : NIT Warangal (Mech) 9.23 CGPA
XAT : 99.21 %tile
Work Ex: Telecom 20 Months
Acheivements : A couple of them.
Extra curiculars : 4-5 paper presentations worked as gen sec of Mech assoc and also sstudent head of national level fest

Any other : NA

Three Profs whose names mentioned earlier. Looks like one profs askss sone looks at file and other looks at the student.

And it was sprof Gangopadhyay who asked 95% of qns
P1 Gangopadhyaay P2 file looking P3 No qns
Experience :

P1 : So Mr venkat are you from Guntur native or any other ?Is Amaravati near to it ?? ( So much he knows)
V: I am from a small village in guntur ( AP) and yes sir amaravati is aorund 10 kms frm it
P1 : Atcha its a cool place except the hot chillies of guntur.
V : Yes Sir Guntur is the world No 1 in chilli production. (largest market also)
P2 : Okay venkatesh tell me you have done your Btech attttttt NIT W hmm gud college and Mechanical engg and u got gud %tage also and now you are in Telecom ( All of them) that too in S/W and now you want an MBA. Where is the link can you connect them ??
(Wow wat a nice way to put an y MBA )

V : I feel an MBA as a bridge to my long term career goals

P1 : Aha wat are your long term goals
V : Atround 10-12 mins on this only (out of 20 mins)
P1 : wat are the companies that are already in to tis type .
V: told and explained how the pressent is and how i would like to do. (Looks convinced)

Now starts
P1 : Venkatesh tell me wat is branding? You know your suit I should say has well suited for you looking gud ( all acknowledged) . It has a tag (louis Phillippe) LP
y do they put such things. you know i am feeling like to buy the similar one u wore. explain me the concept.

V : Sisr the idea is to create the same thought u have got and I would say LP is now successful I would term branding as symbolizing the produucts to make customers identify. The target customers wo already have our product if they can display the product with an identity that hepls new ppl to buy them. For ex my frn has reffered me thi is a gud one.

P2 : In the middle but looks like your suit is dominating you. you have to be marketed but yu are like a brand ambassdr for LP

V: Smile. If that is the case, i ned to rethink be4 makin any branded decisions and make sure it should only serve the needed one.

P2 : No probs its sreally gud for you.

P1 : Now venkatesh tell me wat you do at your work
V : Told the skills nedded and profile roles and resp and some awards

P1 : Okay lets change the topic tell me if valentines day clebrations needed to be banned in India i mean like wat karnataka witnessed

V : told as long as the indian values ( mentioned them) are not dis regarded theres no harm in that. Had some discussison on it

P1 : Okay you know abt the lawers ting in Chennai ? wtas ur opinion

V : told 2 points seach on lawer and and the police and if those two points are removed the case would not have hit head lines and i would go on lawers side if u remove that point as expressin concern for thier fraternity is a freedom of speech and they can take it inb lwful way

P1 : okay now tell me who is our home minister ?
V : (Kaun) yah chidambaram Sir,

P1 : aha preveiously he was ?
V : finance min

P1 : now tell me wat do you think abt him is he succesful ??
V: took time and " yes Sir wat ever UPA has promised that it will do like common mans welfare etc that all can be best done by budget and he has played a key role. If you take my case i am benefitted by inc in ta slab and if you take the case of farmers the loan waiver has benefitted them and overall i feel he has kept his promises

P1 : tell me wats a rain forest and where ist in AP ?
V ; ummmm I dont know Sir.

P1 : okay no probs. So any thing else he loked at P2 and P3.

P2 okay venkatesh we are done gives bak the file after scrutnizing them thorugly. Did you sign it ?
V : Yes Sir. Thankss a lot it was nice speaking to you have a nice day.

So thast its puys PM me wat you feel abt the intrvw. NO acads no tell me abt ur self. More imp i wasnot asked abt form. But looks like they have read it and were having an idea abt it.

Re: [2009] XLRI GD/PI Experiences - BM and PMIR - 23-02-2009, 06:21 PM

Folks, a couple of small requests from me....

1) Please don't quote the entire post. It makes the page longer, tougher to read, and once the traffic on this page increases, it will make life much tougher.

2) If you have a specific query, please send it to the 'poster' using PM, rather than carrying out one-to-one conversations.

3) Take everyone's experience with a pinch of salt. There is no panel consistently tough or consistently easy. A lot depends on you. Please don't go in with preconceived notions.

4) Do make sure that you're well-versed with your 'Why MBA', 'Why HR', 'Why Finance' etc. answers. These people are all very senior profs, and can generally figure out when someone is bluffing.

Please post any queries on the relevant thread rather than here. I would appreciate your cooperation, because we here are a bit stretched for time over the next week or so with submissions, exams etc.

All the best!!

The length of interview varies but is often around 15-20 mins.
Personally my interview was on the shorter side (<15 mins) but that is more the exception than the norm.

BTW, if you see last yr's interview experiences, u'll notice that many interviews were in fact based on your hometown (mine was completely based on tht). And not just your hometown, but also your place of study (college) and work...

Do they put u under stress during the interview or is it like they ask you questions and listens to your answers irrespective of their merit/relevance?

There is no general rule, really. They might... or they might not... and even the same panel is not consistent in terms of stress interviews. It could happen that you hear about a panel that's putting people under stress, but they end up being the nicest, most genial people you've ever spoken to.

So, don't go too much by what people say. Ultimately, the stress that's there or not there will be mostly dictated by you.

All the best!!

Re: [2009] XLRI GD/PI Experiences - BM and PMIR - 24-02-2009, 07:33 PM

Educational Profile:

Any other professional certification or course undertaken: None.
XAT percentile: 99.26

Work profile (if applicable):

Number of years: 7 Months

Special achievements at work: None.

Other differentiating factors (anything great that you have done in life, that's out of the ordinary): Massive amount of certi’s, Best outgoing student of Coll.

Number of participants: 3+1
Panelists' intro (if possible): Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Supriya Kumar De and Rajeev Sharma
Duration: 25 mins

PI Questions:
P1,P2,P3 (Abhijit Gangopadhyay, Supriya Kumar De and Rajeev Sharma in that order) and Moi

My interview was slated to be at 4:40 went in at 4:30.

Wished the panel asked if I could sit and was told to.
P2 asked me for my file (which is quite large, 109 extracurric certis) I gave it to him and he almost dropped it and looked impressed with the number of certi’s

Interview:

P1: Lets leave all this MBA, technical things aside, my colleagues will ask you that, you tell me something about women’s empowerment, why women are oppressed and what you will do to solve the problem

M: started off with the historical problems of men to be the breadearners and women seen to be the homemakers and nowadays when women want to go out and achieve their lot they meet with opposition,

P1: asked me when I get married and my wife wants to work what will I do,

M :gave a nice answer, don’t remember exactly but it was something on the lines of accepting her views and respecting her goals,

Some general discussion went on..

P1: we are in recession if you’re a minister give me 3 points what you do to combat this recession

M: Talked about how the recession is caused by a lack of confidence in the banks and lack of confidence of the banks themselves so the points were:

1)give confidence to the banks to lend
2)build confidence in the ppl w.r.t the banks
3) give some short term sops to affected sectors

P1: What sectors are affected is your sector affected?

M: My company isn’t affected and most development companies wont be. The service companies that cater to the banks will be affected.

The other sectors are Housing and auto because they depend on the bank loans and exports which depend on the countries in recession.

P1: Why you want to give up a job paying X lakhs and come all the way to Jharkand?

M: told my reason, P1 seemed satisfied.

P2: you seem to have won a lot of quizzes, I was asked a question by a small kid yesterday which I couldn’t answer, I’ll ask you that?

M: I’ll surely try sir.

P2: ok name 5 characters common b/w the Ramayana and Mahabahrata

M: (thought) Hanuman

P2 k give me more.

M: don’t know sir, (anyone know?)

P2: even I said only hanuman, Ok you’re a CS grad. What area in CS are you comfortable?

M: sir, my biggest strength and weakness is that I am comfortable with almost all areas,

P2: asked need for normalization

M: told

P2: asked what is a database and what is stored data or info

M: told defn of DB and told data is stored.

P2: asked diff b/w database and information system

M: told what I knew

P2: asked if I was sure

M: told I was not but it was my best try.

P3:: again asked why MBA what is field of interest

M: told reason told image processing

P3: (takes out an ad from the paper about animation) is this it?

M: (smiled) no sir, that is animation I am interested in computer vision. Comps can crunch numbers like humans but can’t see like us

P3: then you should do Mtech

M: no sir, there is a lot of technical know how in the field I am interested in the business aspects of it

P3: ok give me 5 uses of google maps

M: gave 5 good reasons, don’t remember them exactly
Gave an example with everything, seemed satisfied.

P3: asked about traffic situation and how to change it.

M: gave my idea with an example of blore traffic

P2: nice talking to you. Have you signed (said yes) you may leave.

In retrospect: Really chilled interview, at no point did i feel stressed, got into the flow and didnt feel any pressure. Very knowledgable panel (let me emphasise VERY!). No questions on my online form ( had filled it after a lot of thought) No questions on my work.

All in all I felt good after the interview.

Opinions please PUY’s.

Verdict: Selected.
