Coming on topic,
Mercy Hospital have got the the grant for some high tech equipment which could be used for treatment purpose and in return hospital have to treat poor people free of cost. As a CMO my job is to get the hospital back to a smooth running situation if not a profit making situation.

As it seems from government action, that they will provide funds for the growth of hospital so main emphasis should be given on treatment, because hospitals are place not built solely for profit making but to provide a better treatment process for the patients.

Second thing, in absence of funding from Govt., hospital wouldn't have had that technology in first place with which they are planning to earn the profit. So its there moral responsibility to abide by the rules.

Third, They can request patient and most importantly there relatives to keep the hospital area clean, because hospital area if dirty will spread more disease rather than treating few and once people will understand it they will take care not to spread dirt here and there. Above it Hospital authority can link with some charity organization which provide such service free of cost. Many NGO are providing such service, so cleanliness problem will be resolved.

Fourth, treating poor people free of cost will eventually attract more funding from the government for modernization and also many non government agency will be happy to fund for such a noble cause. Hence in the long run such intiative will prove fruitful for hospital future. So rather than being shortsighted, hospital authority should take necessary step so that needy can get the treatment. :-)

Cheers,
Anand
The Hospital can market itself in national dailies and tv as one of the few having the hi tech equipment and the fact that it treats the poor for free, without mentioning the fact it is because of deal with the govt...The ROI from the marketing would definitely cover up the losses and the cost of advertising

The Hospital, since it has to treat poor patients, can open a room at d entrance with a attached bathroom for visitors to leave their slippers and wash their feet, irrespective of whether one is rich or poor...hospital is after all, a divine place where technology is used to save lives which would be otherwise lost...boards and posters can be put up in places emphasizing on maintaing the campus clean

We must realise that hospitals are not meant for profit but for humanity...so the short term goal at this moment should not be about profit but only to keep the hospital running.

  • What can be done to generate funds is -provide free treatment for general ward (which wud include treatments for common regular diseases and small trivial tests involved) but charge for specialised treatments which wud require highly skilled doctors.
  • Since the place is already equipped with high tech machines, the word of mouth (not actually by advertisement - coz no funds for it now)about the good standard of the hospital would surely spread across and bring in more ppl for treatment.
  • And the cleanliness required can only be brought about by awareness...(since hiring of more sweepers for cleaning wud mean paying more salaries- whc is not possible at this moment). Use banners, signages at every possible place and also ask present staff to keep saying it to ppl who come. Use of huge floor mats at various entrances to vital treatment areas wud also help in keeping the place clean to a certain extent.

well another noticeable point is its a pediatric hospital, so the parents of kids (patients) can be taught about hygiene and to instill these in their children as well. maybe they can generate some more goodwill by giving some books to these kids

As Mercy Hospital has got a grant from the government, profit cannot be the sole motive of running the hospital. So the management of Mercy will have to bear with the loss in profit.

Suggestions to the CMO:
1. More number of janitors to be stationed in the common areas.
2. All patients(children) and their family must be educated about the advantages of cleanliness.
3. Provision of soap and water for the poor to clean hands and feet before entering the hospital premises.
4. Optimize usage of equipment and beds in the hospital.
5. Wherever possible, try to minimze on wastage of medicines etc. Also launch a drive against wastage of electricity & water.
6. Partially increase the cost for services like Single seater rooms etc.

case-9- in a company, mostly teenagers and women in early 20s are recruited for job of operators but they are regularly absent so management hire some substitutes for which cost go up and company have to allocate more in budget......the manager is not happy for this cost and wants advice from you as a consultant as how to deal with this?
