well FMS RCs and VA section are tough. Dont get tensed by facing these sections first. You could start by lr or quant.

i believe that 12-15 correct answers (with descent accuracy) in each of the RC and VA sections will land us in a safe zone...
still we'd like to hear from any of the experienced puys regarding the same...

For RAGHAV ,SHIVANI...and others....
last year in RC i attempted 3 RC'S completely out of 5...
and i should'nt say i did all 24 ques correctly....take my accuracy as 80% and assume i did 16-17 correctly...
i got a percentile of 98+ with that...
as for VA i cannot say..since i attempted all 35 QUES... and i got 99+ so u never know a safe bet shud be 10-15 correct answers....

Hi Shivani,
An Oxymoron is a statement or figure of speech that has two contradictory views within itself. For eg. There was this question in XAT recently about an oxymoron.. The guy loved his aunt very much but found her affection throttling..something on the lines of that..
A pseduonym is another name or alias to the actual name. Its used to hide ones original identity. I dont know whether something called a pseudosyn exists or not so I assumed it was a typo
A maxim is another name for an aphorism. It is used to present a certain viewpoint/observation in a conscise manner. Something like
Believe nothing you hear, and only half of what you see. — Mark Twain
Hope this helps .

These are called ' figures of speech'.
XAT 2009 also had about 6 questions on these figures of speech.
You can easily remember some of the terms by assosiating them with examples.
See the following file for more details and examples.

Hey lets discuss that problem here. The question goes like:
Read the 10 statement and answer the questions.
i) During the interview Rakesh answered all the questions in mono syllables like:"yes","no" and "perhaps".
ii) Mona advised Sujata ,not to end all her business calls with a "feel free to call me" statement as it was an over used expression.Sujata however disregarded the advice and continued to do so.
iii) When Shyam was recovering from severe bout of jaundice his mother Ramola has no option but to be very strict with Shyam diet. She called herself a "mean mother" at that time.
iv) In 1942, Abel Tasman,a Dutch navigator discovered the island of Tasmania off the South-eastern coast of Australia.
v) When the class, yet again failed to submit the assignment in time ,Reena, the class teacher, angrily denounced the class for full fifteen miutes.
vi) Seema could have very well written WHO and saved time. By writing the full form World Health Organization, she missed winning the last round of quiz by two seconds.
vii) "O'Henry",the short story writer was actually William Sydney Porter in real life.
viii) When Krishna gave the sales figures of the last five years, the client was convinced that the product was"successful" and was not an exaggeration.
iX) All the team members were so excited that they rushed to answer first and gave many wrong answers in the quiz. Jai,the leader scolded them and said,"Look before you leap."
x) Sunita was planning a surprise party for her husband. She felt hurt when Bimal, her husband. She felt hurt when Bimal, her husband asked,"What are you scheming behind my back."
