Essay-Writing in XAT (XLRI)

For the last six years, essay writing has been a part of the entrance exam of XLRI. This essay is in addition to the two-hour objective type test paper that the students have to answer. After the OMR answer sheets have been collected from the students, the question-cum-answer sheet for the essay is given to them. The question-cum-answer sheet for the essay is a blank sheet of paper on the top of which the essay topic is printed.

Students are given 20 min. to write an essay on the topic given to them. Though no specific word limit is normally given, you are expected to write the essay in about 250 words (in the 25-27 printed lines provided in the answer sheet).

The performance in essay writing is taken into consideration in case of those candidates who have qualified for the interview in the objective test. The essay is not normally taken into account for the purpose of short-listing students for interview.

The essay topics can be broadly categorized into knowledge-based and non-knowledge based topics. Knowledge-based topics require a good knowledge base on the part of the students to be able to write a proper essay. These could also include socio-economic topics. For example, a topic given in one of the recent papers of XLRI read “Economic growth without distributive justice will lead to violence.” Non-knowledge based questions test your basic worldly knowledge and ability to think. An example from a recent XLRI paper is: “There is no right way to do a wrong thing.” In both knowledge-based and non-knowledge based topics, overall understanding of human attitudes and behaviour is required.

There are three basic necessities of a good essay. These are the three basic parameters on which your essay will be evaluated. The three parameters are

a) Content

b) Clarity

c) Correctness

Let us look at each of these aspects in detail and understand what you should equip yourself with to do well in the descriptive part of XAT.

Content: The essay should contain points that are relevant to the topic given. The evaluator is interested in knowing how much you know about the topic and the subject that it covers rather than knowing what all you know about aspects that are not connected to the issue. It is necessary for you to equip yourself with knowledge about the current trends in the economic, social, socio-economic and political scenario in India and abroad. You should read general and business newspapers as well as general and business on a regular basis. This will help you develop more points on the topic as well as can give good examples in support of your points. This information you gather by reading newspapers and magazines will be useful to handle both knowledge based and non-knowledge based topics.

Clarity: The essay should be organised set of points presented in a systematic and coherent manner. Once you are clear about the content that you would like to present in your essay, you should first make a framework of what you would like to write. You should spend two to three minutes in thinking about the topic given and noting down the points that occur in your mind. You should then prioritise the points and decide how you would organise your essay. The essay should have a good introduction, a coherent middle and a rational conclusion. Avoid the use of statistical data if you are not absolutely sure of its correctness. Do not use quotations unless you are sure of the name of the writer because the writer’s name should be mentioned if you quote his words.

Correctness: Your content and clarity should duly be supported by correctness of expression. Correctness includes the use of language and sentence formation. Avoid the use of high-sounding vocabulary. Your essay should be in simple English so that what you write would mean what you want it to mean. Do not write long sentences with too may conjunctions in it because the sentence would go out of your control and you make unforced errors. Do not use unnecessary expressions and become too verbose when you frame sentences.

topics - 31-12-2002, 10:47 PM

Essay Topics given in recent XLRI papers
1. There is no right way to do a wrong thing.

2. “By the third or fourth week of the term, business school had succeeded in afflicting me with a variation of the Stockholm Syndrome, named after the incident in which a hostage in a Stockholm Bank robbery fell in love with one of her captors.” [Peter Robinson in “Snapshots from Hell: The making of an MBA”]

3. “Ships in harbour are safe; and that is not what they are built for.” Comment on the statement in the context of Indian industry.

4. Economic growth without distributive justice will lead to violence.

5. Indian economy in the post-WTO regime.

Suggested Essay Topics for practice
1. Creative thought requires an act of faith. [George Gilder in “Wealth and Poverty”]

2. Ideas are abstract; it is much easier to talk about them in terms of how they are expressed in material form. But ideas in material form are not the only ones that matter. If that were true, then only a tiny percentage of people would be able to benefit from their ideas.

3. There is a world of difference between strong ego, which is essential, and a large ego – which is destructive.” [Lee Iacocca in “Iacocca – An Autobiography”]

4. The biggest problem with trying to manage stress is that we try to do just that, manage it, instead of getting rid of the people who are causing all the stress in the first place. It really is pointless to recommend relaxation, response periods, deep breathing exercises and other stress-reduction techniques when the carriers of the malady are breathing fire just around the corner.

5. “Even a tortoise comes out of its shell to make progress.” Comment on the above in the context of Indian industry.

6. Greatness most often results not from extraordinary ability, but rather from ordinary ability followed through with extraordinary devotion – Please comment.

7. The mind handles information in a characteristic way. This way is very effective and it has huge practical advantages. But it also has limitations. In particular, the mind is good at establishing concept patterns but not at restructuring them to bring them up-to-date.

8. Ideas are dime a dozen. People who put them into action are priceless.

9. Luck is when preparedness meets opportunity.

10. “One can never consent to creep when one feels the impulse to soar” – Helen Keller.

11. Fatigue leads to a loss of efficiency, impaired initiative, distorted judgement, skewed perception of time and heightened anxiety. Perhaps most important, fatigue erodes subjective standards of performance. As we grow more tired, we are ready to settle for less quality and accuracy. During World War II, Royal Air Force psychologists observed that pilots made the most errors as they drew their planes in for a landing on returning to their base from hazardous raids. The cause, said the analysts, was an almost irresistible tendency to relax.

12. “The best lesson anyone can learn from business school is an awareness of what it can’t teach you – all the ins and outs of everyday life” – Mark H. McCormack in “What They Don’t Teach You at Harvard Business School.”

13. One way to think of a digital nervous system is as a way to give the internal staff the kind of data for daily business use that you give a consultant for a special project. It’s just crazy that somebody outside your company receives more information than you use for yourself. Not all managers will have the expertise or breadth of knowledge that a consultant brings to a business, but they should have access to data of the same quality.

14. “Natural selection acts on individuals. A particular population of possums may be subject to predation by cats. As a result, larger individuals in that population are fitter and the population average changes. Macroevolution is just such examples of microevolution aggregated over long periods of time and space” – Comment on the above with reference to the growth of Indian industry.

15. “The safer you can make a situation, the higher you can raise the challenge” – Tim Gallwey in “The Inner Game of Tennis.”

16. Students of chaos theory are familiar with "sensitive dependence on initial conditions", the butterfly flapping its wings in Brazil setting off a tornado in Texas. As the country muddles through our chaotic democracy, one sometimes wonders whether there are some simple, seemingly inconsequential events that, like the butterfly effect, cause a cyclone of chaos.

17. “If you can change the rules, you often can take away a competitor’s advantage” – John Sculley in “Odyssey – Pepsi to Apple.”
