Dear All,

Case study for the day-

A well known Indian frirm has acquired another comany in a foregign land.....now the parent comapany wishes to lay down workers from the comapny on the pretext that the new company dsnt need as much work force.....the decision was taken in a high level meeting and the further commucation went through the usual routes....

The workers in the acquired comapny have declared a strike from work as a matter of protest and have also damaged the company resources.....however no casualities till date....

Questions posed are
1. What do u feel was the fault in the process of the decision
2. How shld the management take the case forward from the present situation, to not make it worsened

Dear All,

No responses.....wat happened.....im disappointed...

To close the case....my pointers
Its a case of aftereffects of the mergers and acquisitions that happen in the practical scenario......concentrating on the lower level workers......

When the usual mode of communication....it signifies the passage from various levels of management.....in such a scenario.....the original message gets transformed in the trickle down effect....
This is the fault on part of the present management (post acquisition).....there is a significant share of fault by the earlier managment wherein they (assuming) never imagined such a situation cld have arisen....or never communicated to the workers and taken preventive measures (periodic lay off.....or vrs....or anything as per company laws)....

Moving to the next question.....workers are on a strike, damages done to infrastructure.....
Immediate action of the management to call a open meeting with all concerned (the worker class) and not only their representatives.......abide to the words of a possible fault.....and share with them the action plan.....maybe paid leaves....help to find a new job....

The answer would be in the order of priority for the questions....

Seniors pls add ur aluable input for the same...

1. If you decide to lay off workers, you need to obey the labour laws in that specific company, if you obey the laws, and lay off people, then not a problem technically, but to safeguard your image, it is better to offer compensation/VRS/ alternative employment.

2. If the workers have declared an illegal strike, then you need to provide them a show cause notice/charge sheet and suspend them pending inquiry...

Do read cases like the P&G-Gillete merger case, HMSI case, Brittania Delhi case, Bajaj Motors etc to get a more clear understanding of the case..

Keep up the good efforts guys...we never even thought of such kind of preparation...

Cheers

Hi varun

Loads of thanks for all ur inputs...really an insight....

Two queries basically...
1. If u can please detail on the HNSI Case, Hero honda case, britania case.....I can recall only the Hero Honda Gurgaon case when wokers were laid off. strikes, casualities were a resut...just add the year and any other valuable info which makes it easier for a google search result....

2. Can u throw some light on the RPO industry in India...read an article on the same.....how prevalent is it in Indian companies.....what are the concerns associated....my info says.....consultants do exist but HR within comapny take all steps beyond the name of the concerned person....Pls add ur inputs....
