hi shammy,
I might sound like a critique over here...
yeah your background will be the reason of some difficulties for you......as in mba they will not be teaching you about the basics of systems and finance they will be teaching about how to manage them.......
you can even go for a marketing job after,,,,,,,,,
regarding the curriculum the only thing i can think of is you will have to work really hard to make up for your background........
In the End nothing else matters......... after a couple of years in corporate nobody really cares about your graduation, your college of mba etc...... the only thing that matters is how you perform in your previous job.......
and before selecting a bschool look at the bigger picture and not just the start that a school can provide you......... I have seen people taking mba from a very poor b school in jaipur and overtaking iim people in less than 3 years.......
regards
kinshuk

Hi shammy ,
first of all congrats for SITM and Delhi B school offer....
Graduation in hotel management and absence of any technical background will be a major problem for your pursual of this course at SITM... People from technical backgrounds will definitely have an edge over you... it will become difficult for you to cope up with people who have spent 4 years of their life gaining technical skills at engineering colleges... Systems and finance is a niche field and restricts the horizon at least in the short term after completing your MBA, however some people may say otherwise. But then it is you who has to take the decision for your future..
Yes , people do get marketing jobs after completing Sys & Fin course but again there is a chance you may not get since the company recruiting for marketing profile would prefer a guy with technical as well as managerial skills ... so there is probability involved for sure ...
why would you want to get into something which is not your forte and regret later... After taking up this course you will have to spend most of the time gaining technical skills when most of your colleagues from technical backgrounds would be learning managerial skills...
You need to decide that after spending a big amount like 7 lakhs and 2 precious years of your life pursuing systems course , will you be able to do the value addition that you are aiming for ...
No college is inferior or superior, it all depends on the person as to how much he can get out of the course and bring value addition to his profile...
Its better to be a topper at a less famous college than being in the lower slot of a more famous college..
I kept myself straightforward and practical in my replies since its not the question of only big money but your entire career is also at stake and remember my friend one wrong decision can make or break your career...
Don’t just listen to one person and take your decision ... everyone will just express his / her personal viewpoint...
So dude , relax , spend some time juxtaposing the advices you get from your near and dear ones , and take the decision which you feel you won’t regret later..
ATB , keep rocking...

I don`t think ur back ground would be of any hindrance,i`ve seen arts graduates after getting some hands on experience and some good certifications of networking excel in the field of networking, so it all depends on your hard work.
after ur mba from sitm u would not be taking care of a live network or fighting hard with high end networking devices(no company hires managers for that they get b.techs for that and at a cheaper rate and yes i was one of them )
as far as technicality of systems curriculum is concerned i guess u should start preparing for ccna as u r still left with 2 months, its ample of time to get comfortable with basics of it, atleast u could be friendly with the technical terms
rest is ya call bro!!!!!!!

hey ashwin,
I have already got confirmation from 2 people who are not joining sitm in marketing and finance....... and now since the iim's results are out so taking that into consideration you have a very good chance of conversion......
hope for the best.........
and my chances are also very bleak of joining sitm......
so keep your fingers crossed.......

Hi shammy587
I read about other people reviews of the dilemma your facing. But since all of em are not perspective students, i think you must also get the viewpoint of somebody who is inside the college.
1) I dont see any reason for you to face difficulties in working in systems domain once you reach corporate. I don't see any difference between a consultant who is a engineer and a consultant who is not. At the end of the day, both are there.
The important thing is that they are there. The path to reach there is difficult. (for both of them). Though, For a Hotel Management graduate it will be more difficult. Studying Core Systems subjects is not easy. but then for us engineers studying economics or accounts is as difficult. for others Liberal Arts are like shoib Akhtar's Bouncers.
I think managing these difficulties is the reason why one is here. The idea is not to run away from it. The idea is to face it, and overcome it.
2) Why would you want to join marketing related jobs. Please do not join any college with a restrictive mindset. Please be open to everything. what if the company for which you are interviewed offered systems profile. Please dont restrict yourself even before joining the college.
With Best Regards

hi gaurang............
well your choice will completely depend on your background and if you would be happy enough to go into a niche field like telecom instead of general mba.....
