obviously that question has been answered previously..
to quote a senior it was somewhere around 90,000 last year.
but does that really matter.. because what matters the most is the number of serious examinees which really are the part of the competition...
so give your best.. good luck

Yes, the essay is about 200-250 words, if I'm not mistaken. I don't think you should write 'arbit' essays.

If you get say 99.9 percentile, but write a crappy essay, you might have to regret it. So, I'd suggest that you devote a total of 15-30 minutes on writing every day, and preferably get your essays read by a friend or teacher.

This will help you in gaining clarity of thought, as well as learning to implement different perspectives that you get by discussing with friends/teachers.

Sanjana, the sequence of events would be as follows:

1) Your sectional percentiles will be computed, and only if you clear all three, your application will be processed further.
2) Your overall percentile would be computed, and only if you clear the cutoff, your application will be processed further.
3. In case there is a tie, (which is almost impossible), the individual scores matter.

I'm not really sure, but I think QA marks are considered over the others. If there is still a deadlock, then other cutoffs will be compared to get a unique rank.

I hope that clarifies your doubt.

Sumit

Techno, apologies for not having the details on those. But then, how would marks be an indicator? If this year, the paper is tougher, or the number of applicants is higher, the cutoffs might go higher, and vice-versa.

Rather than targeting a particular score or percentile, try to attempt 35-40% of the questions in each section, with 85%+ accuracy. That should give you an even chance.

Also, be open to surprises, like the differential sectional weightage that CAT incorporated this year.

Gaurav, the essay topic for us was something like: Gender Imbalance will lead to the third world war.

I'm listing some of the recent essay topics in XAT.

2000 Ships are safer in the harbour. But they are not meant for the same.
2001 Economic Growth without distributive justice can only lead to violence
2002 Indian Economy in the Post WTO Era.
2003 To give real service, one needs to add something that cannot be bought or measured, like sincerity and integrity.
2004 Asked at the age of 83, as to which of his project would he choose as his master piece, Frank Lloyd wright, the architect answered, “The next one”
2005 More than one billion Indians: A gigantic problem or a sea of opportunities.

Now, if you analyse carefully, the essays are quite easy, really. If you are the knowledgeable kind, you can weave your essay around facts and figures and prove your point. If you are the abstract kind, you can write an abstract essay. And if you are neither of these, that's even better! You can use a mix of abstractness and facts to convey your ideas.

I hope this helps!

what is the meaning of 2000 and 2004 topics I could not understand. and please throw some light on how we should frame any essay.

And what if you dont know much statistical data about any thing like in 2002 topic, if one is not able to use much statistical figures then what could be the best strategy to handle it.
