As of now keeping XAT queries and XLRI thread different, but if there isnt much difference the queries, then ill probably merge it soon.

CAn someone tell me what is the difference between the two exams apart from the essay .

From there preparation point of view there's no difference, both of them are undoubtedly the toughest exams for every "Exam period" (starting November and ending January ).
1-> But XAT has some more application based questions. Like in XAT, you might be(actually you are) given certain real life situations and asked "what would be your step for this type of problem?" Some of these questions may be related to HR field also. So that makes the difference.
2-> Also in XAT you might be asked some higher maths. In CAT... no.
Rest I dont think there's much difference. There's difference in pressure ofcourse. In CAT, huuuuuge publicity... u have lotsa pressure. In XAT... you are pretty chilled as you'd have given 3-4 tests already.

1) Obvious time difference
2) Differential negative marking
3) Includes Higher level maths
4) Includes essay
5) Includes questions on decision making (which are quite simple)

In XAT one can concentrate on topics of higher math like matrices, vectors, basic differentiation and integration etc. Generally some questions can be asked based on application of these concepts. XAT the paper is quite difficult. However a sound strategy helps people to maximise the scores. Plus the factor of progressive negative marking demands a very high accuracy especially in Verbal Section(where accuracy is generally lower than DI and Quant)
Picking up the easy questions in all sections is very crucial in XAT. Particularly last year the Reasoning section was a scoring section

Although XAT is conducted by XLRI, but it should be considered as a separate entity. So, everything which comes under XAT is for all the institutions under it.
So, the essay is for all insti.
But, its weightage in the selection process shall vary from college to college. Some may give it due importance, some may not...
In general the essay is on a simple topic. U dont need to have expertise in current affairs for it. So, just relax and work on the MCQs right now...
