Re: XAT 2009 Queries - 17-09-2008, 04:12 PM

Hi

I filled up the XAT and XLRI forms last Sunday(7th Sept) and sent them last Tuesday(9th Sept).

I happened to log on to the XAT site today and downloaded the forms again to keep a copy.I noticed the size of the forms have changed since last Sunday(XAT-27 KB TO 32 KB,XLRI-22 KB to 32 KB).The XAT PP form I had sent had only one bar code with the XAT id written under it and the XLRI PA form had no bar code.
But today the XAT PP form has two barcodes and so does the XLRI PA form.

The changes seem to have been made after I sent the forms since the layout also seems to have changed a bit.And I am sure there was no problem with downloading the forms last time since I had downloaded them through IE,Firefox and Chrome and checked by downloading them on different machines.(I am especially finicky with these things after a bad experience with the JMETform last time).

Could anyone shed any light on this issue?
Is this something I have to worry about?

Well My friend VJ (who Rocks :happy has already given you the most important gyan as far as clearing sectional cutoffs and the overall cut off is concerned. But then also I feel I shall say this as this might make a difference as it did in my case.

YES... planning is very important. YES... following your plan is very very important. But there's also something called intuition/inner voice as we say in simple words.

I remember clearly that out of all the exams I gave last year, XAT was the only exam where I deliberately didn't follow the sectional timelines that I had decided as a part of my Super-Strategy  of cracking these exams. When I had spent the complete time I kept for Maths section (I started with it), I was about to leave it there only. But I felt that may be Maths of this year is easier and the sectional cutoff might go higher... so I gave some 10 more minutes to it. Well I got some 94+ %ile in it and the cut off was around 93%ile for Maths. I still think that "that move" of going away from my strategy made the difference.

This is what you need to practice in Mocks. Try to gauge the paper. Try to find out how the paper is and try to predict what the cutoff would be. I know it is very very difficult but then it builds your "hunch power" .

Sometimes, not following a preplanned path can also lead you to victory.

Dont worry dude... main thing is that your complete forms must reach the XL office. If they have changed something in layout, they'll take care of accepting both the new and the older layouts. Just dont worry about this.

Dont take unnecessary(I know it's not unnecessary but kehna padta hai :laugh tensions... focus on your studies only.

Hi Guys,

First of all Computer_manan, kudos to you for doing such a great job of guiding the juniors as to how to go about the XAT.

I have seen that a lot of people have been asking about the GIM admission procedures and the cutoffs and amazingly non of us were there. I read at a point in this thread that computer_manan was trying to get some people to answer the querries.

THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT GIM ADMISSION 2009 THREAD HAS BEEN OPENED AND YOU ALL ARE CORDIALLY INVITED TO POST ANY QUERRY, AND BY ANY WE MEAN ABSOLUTELY ANY QUERRY THAT YOU MIGHT HAVE, REGARDING GIM.

A LOWDOWN ON THE ADMISSION PROCESS AND THE CRITERIA

App Process

1) Register for XAT and get your password and XAT id.
2) Take the printout for GIM PA form after filling in the relavant details and your XAT id on the GIM website (Admissions Icon)
3) Pay 1200 bucks at your nearest IMS and get a reciept or make draft for the same amount in favour of GOA INSTITUTE OF MANAGEMENT.
4)Courier the PA Form (No photos required) along with the reciept of IMS OR the bank draft to GIM.

Selection Process

1) Last year minimum cutoff was 90.01%ile. Expected to be 93%+this year but thats a conjencture
2) ABSOLUTELY NO SECTIONALS. Get the minimum score with a non zero score in all sections and you are through.
3) GD PI in march.
4) everything from XAT score to GD PI score to Acad to workex has a specific weightage which will be provided in the prospectus, which will be sent to you after application.
5) Results by 30 April.

Hit the GIM admissions thread in case of any furthur clarifications.

Warm Regards
Snape

Hey Snape,

Thanks for the appreciation which I wanna share with all my XLRI friends. (Also thanks for reminding me of Harry Potter... how I wish if it could go on and on and on    ).

I also invite you to be one of us in solving queries related to XAT on this thread. There is a separate thread for XLRI also but some students have queries which are more related to XAT than a college but same time, are somewhat related to college also. At that time, it'd be helpful if have representatives from all the colleges in this thread.

Hi Manan,

It will be real pleasure to be a part of this thread and help out in XAT prep and other application procedures. Having gone through the XAT twice and it being my favourite paper of the entire season, I will be most willing to address any queries regarding XAT, especially verbal, because thats how I got into GIM in the first place, by cracking VA.

I fully agree regarding the college related query thing. Often your XAT strategy depends on the kind of college you apply to. I never applied to XLRI cos of the quant sectional, while GIM has got no sectionals.

Thankfully, the app procedure, though tedious, is pretty much the same for most XAT score accepting colleges. I am sure this thread will see greater participation from people from XIM B and LIBA and even SP Jain the run up to the test.

As for we here at GIM, rest assured, we will now be a fixture here to extend all the support to this intiative.

Regards
Snape

One more thing, the upper cut off for any sectional in worst case scenarios will not be more then 1/3rd of the marks alloted to it unless it is an fms paper
since, xat as a paper is difficult one, 1/3rd marks should be the MAX the cut off can get
the best policy in my opinion would be to attemp 40% "marks" in each section and move one..it would be a safe bet...
rest of the time, you can maximize your strongest section...
i mentioned "marks" and not questions considering it may have differential marking..
also, manan is right, you cannot follow a predetermined plan always..
coz da section ur stronger in might be difficult (unlucky )..den u should not waste time while maximizing in da difficult section..as in dat case you might leave easier doable questions in other sections..
ofocurse gauging the paper in those first 15 minutes in half battle won...
