mdi or iift - urgent call - please respond - 09-05-2004, 01:29 PM

hello

the ageold dilemma of mdi vs iift has come up again. last dates for the fees at both institutes is here and i have to make a decesion finally.

i have got points in favour of both but here are a few of my predicaments:

1. firstly, there was this mail doing rounds about some discrepancies at MDI placements last year. how the topper of the batch did not get placed anywhere and how some of the companies went back without hiring anyone . how true is that . can anybody ( with contacts )verify ?????

and if this was indeed the case, how was the placement for the rest of the batch..

2. is MBA -IB actually a very very specific course with a restricted and limited niche?

after all business - be it international or domestic , does have the same rules and principles everyewhere !! even international business would require one to know the basic fundamentals of finance, mktg., HR, operations etc.. wouldn't it??

3. moreover from what i can decipher from the placemet reports at IIFT, there have been so many indian companies coming for domestic placements , with actually very few foreign placements.. so how does that make IIFT different form anyother inst..

and how good is the placement actually at IIFT..

my guess is that there would be one/two compulsary courses on foreign trade and international business which give this course a tag of IB - MBA..now how correct is that. can sbdy give a clearer picture??

4. also i ahve been told by the people i ahve consulted that MDI has a better brand name and definately has a name for itself im MKTG. is there nothing of this sort for IIFT - a strength as such ....???
also i have been told that if have interest in foreign trade iift is the best place...

but honestly , for the uninitiated like me, i donot know what it is like to study foreign trade and how a career is in the same. i am not averse to studying it if it gives me good opening career opportunities rather than narrow down the scope

5. as far as fees is concerned , MDI is certainly the more expensive one

so with the above points - what would be advisable ????

btw - i am an engg from delhi university - final year. do keep that in mind

Take Marketing for example, it differs how Indian tea is marketed in India and In France. The tone of the strategy shud be in sync with the culture and sentiments in that region. U need a fair knwoledge of IB to procure goods from the chaepest foreign location add value in another cheap area and sell it getting max profit...
So IB is specialised...

Buddy read the IIFt brochure which says that their foreign placements are very less ... Read the third page0-director's message i guess.
Its not for a foreign job that go for IIFT. Its "hardcore IB" in your blood that takes u there. Say ur interset in WTO , Economic Unions, FTAs, Customs Unions etc..
and how good is the placement actually at IIFT..

MDI is infact a better brand name... IIFT is Min of Commerce's area so there are sonme controls . While MDI is a free bird - AICTE's nodal centre is MDI

If u do not like or like to hear these stuff(liek wto, ipr) say good bye to IIFT and go 4 MDI....

The final decision is Yours.
U R the GOD!!!

Join IIFT and leave MDI for waitlisted people like me

No, on serisous note, if I was given an option between IIFT and MDI, I would have taken MDI anyday.

Cheers and All the Best

It really surprises me time and again when I see such posts. This institute vs that and what not. Now I am pretty sure that what we all want out of a 2 year MBA is just a good paying job and nothing else. It may sound a little harsh but I really think buddy you do not know where r u going in Life ? Think about it pal. What do you want ? You do not need to ask qustions from other people but to yourself what r your likings, what r your strengths etc. Suppose I as another person reply to your post about what to go for ,I may reply with my preconceived notions, not yours. So relax, do your SWOT analysis, please and I again reiterate please do not go by salaries alone ......... find out what your forte is ....an then decide. If you join an MBA without knowing what it is and even land up in a good paying job, rest assured if the job content does not match your interests ..............you will repent all yr life.........I do not wish to be sarcastic.........just trying to show u the way .....Hope it helps
