Hii mesmarisingstar
No, work exp is not compulsory in getting into IITs.
However its also rite that if you hav work exp it definitely gives u an advantage.Having said that it does not mean freshers don't stand a chance. We have 5 freshers in our batch of 2010.However, for that you definitely have to show something extra.

Cheers

Re: [2008-09]JMET 2009- Queries - 22-08-2008, 12:54 PM

Hi. I have some queries regarding the eligibility critieria.

1. Is the applicant required to have a First Class or 60 % ?
Sounds innocuous, but let me explain. I am an engineer from Mumbai University ( 2007 batch ). A Class is awarded here, on the basis of your final year marks (( sem 7 + sem / 2). 60% and above is a First Class. However, if you happen to have a KT in either sem 7 or sem 8 , then irrespective of your net score ( after having cleared the KT ) , you will only be awarded a PASS CLASS.
Now my net aggregate ( sem 7 + sem 8 )/2 works out to 66.x , but I had a KT in my 7th semester ( which i managed to clear successfully ). My degree certificate shows that the university has awarded me a Pass Class.

So , am I eligible for JMET ? Taking it forward, am I eligible to apply to the SoMS. The brochure mentions First Class or equivalent. I'm not quite sure as to what that means...

2. Additionally, do we require 60% only in the final year ( Sem 7 + Sem 8 ) or a First Class throughout the 4 years of engg ?

I would be really grateful if someone could answer these queries.
Thanks

- Varun

IITs or any entrance exam- When they say 60 %/ 50 % it means that it should be aggregate across all the 4 years of Engg/ 3 years of graduation.

Thanks. That resolves a part of my problem.
What about the 'First Class' v/s 'Pass Class with a 66.xx' though ? How does that work ?

Hi, I think u just need to fetch up 60% marks nothing else. At the end if u r having that muh, ur the king(queen in case of the fairer sex)...

Also a pass grade just means ur just pass. that should stand for smthng like 33%(I think so). But still if you end up with 66.XX %....everything else falls into place.

Hope I was of some use.

Hey Navneet,
I think you misinterpreted my post slightly
I have already graduated in 2007.
I already have a 66.xx in final year and a 61.xx over 4 years.
My university follows this procedure where they award a PASS CLASS if you've flunked a subject in your final two sems ( which I have -- sen 7). Therefore, I already have a PASS CLASS despite scoring 66.xx in my final year.

Hence, my question hasn't yet been answered completely. But your effort and endeavor is sincerely appreciated.

Cheers,

Varun

I really appreiate the effort put in by you in order to apprecciate my effort to answer your query....lolzzzzz...

Jokes apart, I think you are perfectly eligible to appear for JMET as you have finally scored 60% in Engineering(that's aggregate).
I am not sure as how IITs look upon the marks obtained in individual years,so you can confirm about it .
Otherwise you are eligible to appear. But I would like you to please confirm that individual year thing.
