hi.. i wanted to ask regarding the admission procedure for admission into MBA programs @ IITs .. what abt the paper pattern i have heard that in JMET they lay huge stress on Quant.. and its level is a notch higher than the other entrance exams... and also what is the importance for acads and extracurr etc ?? im a fresher .. so no work ex either..

i can say that what u have heard is partially true . and the level is higher than some other exams , i can quote this in a way that jmet is not an easy paper.i am also a fresher so don't worry.acads and extra curricular helps till an extent its your mind set which occupies a larger space

Hi CAT aspirants

With Less than 3 months to go I hope you all must be totally involved into CAT prep these days, analyzing your percentiles, coming to terms with your work and study timings (for those of you who are working) and living with agony and ecstasy of clearing (and not clearing) cutoffs. This is just first part of this eventful journey called MBA. The rest unexplored, rigorous, challenging awaits you all. I am first year student of DMS, IITD and in my subsequent posts i will introduce you to the IIT delhi, Department of management studies.

About DMS, IITD.
Though the esistance of the program goes back to 1976, it was formally rechrishtened MBA program only in 1993. The brand IITD is well known and need very less introduction. DMS being part of IITD, not only derives its strength from the legacy of IITD but also has started to build on its own identity by organising events exclusively managed and funded by DMS. Situated in prime location of south delhi with b schools like IMI, IIFT, Fore and others just a stroll away gives it a tremendous locational advantage considered to be a very essential part of MBA as it keeps to connected with the outside world.

About intake and programs.
DMS offers Full Time and Part time programs in MBA with
1) DLM - Focus of Management systems (60 seats)
2) DLT - Focus on telecommunication management (15 seats)

Both the programs have specializations of Fin, Marketing, Ops, Systems and HR, while the latter one of them, DLT having a specific focus on telecommunication Management. With limited intake less than 100 and infrastucture of IITD, it offers very high faculty to students ratio and personalized attention. The department is fully air conditioned with its own facilities like labs, library, placement office and host of others.

Why should you join DMS, IIT delhi
Brand IIT.
The one thing which goes very strongly in favour of DMS is its association with IIT Delhi, from where it draws all its infrastructure. So be it paid journals, association with other universities and brand equity, IITians stands to gain as against other B schools which might be popular in particular region but fail to leave a mark when we talk of them being going global. Case in point being one of the visiting faculty, Dr Stan Kachnowski from Columbia. He very often talks about the Brand IIT specially IIT Delhi and its reach far and wide.

Faculty
Its a misconception that IIT B schools are good only at operations and Systems. IIT Delhi has one of the best faculty of finance and most of the batch of 2008 has joined specifically because of their inclination towards Finance. Each faculty member here has Co-authored several books with other faculty members. Some of the well known figures around are

Industry Interaction
Situated in the capital of India and close to NCR, gives DMS a locational advantage which helps in building industry interaction, a must for any B school. Seminar, Meet, Talks are organized all round the year. We just had a Finance Rostrum which was attended by regional Director, SEBI, VP Axis Bank, Senior VP Technopak and others. The next in line is IT Rostrum which will have representation from Google, Yahoo, IBM and others.

Admissions and JMET
All the students aspiring for IIT b schools have to take JMET as entrance test. The test comprises of 4 sections. The level of questions based on past year experiences
Quant: tough
LR: moderate to easy
DI: moderate
Eng: moderate

The idea to crack JMET is to focus on overall score with some minimum scores in each. The minimum score is to make onself eligible to get the rank, the criteria of which is again debatable. In the past years people were not given ranks if there scores were sub zero or sometimes even zero score in a section is considered disqualified (dont quote me for this, i have just read these instances in the last 2 years threads)

A positive score in quant, in the past has been enough for all IIT's except SJMSOM, ofcourse with standard disclaimer that the past experiences does not gurantee any correlation with future events.

My suggestions will be to focus on maximizing the overall score with some respetable time devotion to all the sections. Could be 15 min each minimum to all sections which would mean 60 min and then remaining 60 mins to focus on easier sections. This will gurantee a very good rank.

In the past students have focussed on balancing the scores in all sections ala CAT. But remember JMET has different criteria of judging students. Be aware of this before attempting the paper.

Here are the placement statistics of 2008 batch........

The astounding success of the Placement season for the Class of 2008 has once again reaffirmed DMS's reputation of being a centre of excellence for management education. Some of the most respected and prestigious brands from the corporate world visited the campus to recruit the finest of management graduates.

For a batch of 63 students we had a participation of 46 Companies. A total of 91 offers were made to the outgoing batch. Offers per student stood at 1.44, the average salary this year was a whopping 11.92 Lakhs p.a, which witnessed a surge of 33% compared to the last batch. The median salary turned out to be 11.7 Lakhs p.a. The highest domestic salary for the class of 2008 was a staggering 20.7 Lakhs p.a. offered by Reliance Energy. Quite a few companies could not recruit anyone as the process got over on day zero itself.

This year also witnessed a slew of laterals being offered to the students where in the average salary for the laterals stood at 13.15 Lakhs p.a., while the median salary stood at 12.5 Lakhs p.a.

The profiles offered by the companies spanned across every vertical of management from Finance, Consulting, Marketing, Operations and IT to HR.

Some of the star recruiters in the Banking and Financial sector included names like Lehman Brothers, GE, Citibank, HSBC, Kotak Mahindra, SBI Caps, ICICI Bank, Standard Chartered, Crisil, SEBI, IDBI, Irevna, Westend Capital, E-Clerx etc.

Companies like Bristlecone, Ernst & Young, IBM Business Consulting, MB Petroleum (Oman), Cognizant (Market Rx), KPMG, Avalon Consulting etc. handpicked students for Consulting Profiles. Marketing profiles were given by FMCG majors like Reckitt Benckiser, Coke, RPG Retail, Bombay Dyeing, GSK etc. while Idea, AC Nielsen, Pfizer, DCM Shriram, Maruti Limited, Balmer Lawrie Ltd. etc. offered Operations Profiles. Companies like Bharti Enterprises, Vodafone, Pfizer, Maytas Infrastructure etc. offered profiles in some of the emerging sectors like telecom, retail, pharmaceutical, infrastructure etc.
