Number of Freshers:13
Age Range:21-29
Last JMET Rank in the Class:1350

rmbt posted sumwhere that since his spclization is nt finance he cant commnent on how gud it is @IITM . Personally i see this a negative answer an indirect way of saying that finance enthus shud nt opt for IITM . Please do correct me if i m wrong , and i would love to be wrong , coz if i am a rite i wud hav to scrap one wonderful clg frm my list......

I dont know how you got a negative impression about IIT M.

If you carefully read the post again, I have asked some one who has taken Finance(& other specialization ) as the specialization, to bring out the positives of the course.

I didnt take up Finance as it didnt suit me. How can it imply that the college is not upto the mark or the college is bad. In fact, we have always had the best placement in finance(among all the specialisation) over years and it has the maximum no of subjects offered in a specialisation.

As I am a student now in the 2nd yr of the course, though not someone who's gonna specialize totally in Finance, I think I would like to answer this question.

Finance offered in DoMS IITM is taught by very learned and decorated faculty. Two of our finance professors have been awarded the Best Teacher awards from AIMS India.

The electives offered in finance cover the length and breadth of the entire subject. In fact it is one of those courses which you can consume totally i.e. there are so many electives possible for you to take that you can specialize in Finance totally, though people here do also take up other electives. We have had great external interaction with the outside Finance honchos. Just 2-3 days ago we had in our Financial Institutions and Markets class, a current EXIM Bank biggie come and teach us the course, who has also worked with the World Bank for a huge no of years and has played various roles in that sector. In addition, for the same course, we will be having StanChart executives fly down from Singapore for taking up some sections.

And finally, the placements. We have had great placements in the Fin area with companies such as Lehman Bros, Fidelity, Barclays Bank (London), Bank of America, Irevna, and Aranca recruit from here. In the past we have also had overseas firms such as Bloomberg have come for placements.

So all in all, just like other disciplines, finance is a live and kicking domain being taught at our campus.

Hi,
DoMS IIT Madras offers MBA, MS and Phd programs. For MBA, there is only one common program. So, that automatically becomes the flagship program.

Your specialization is decided by the number of electives you choose from various streams in the second year. For instance, if you choose most of your electives(say 70%) from finance, that will become your specialization. It could even be a combination(say 40% finance and 40% systems and IT).
