Sorry for replying so late. We have just finished one quarter and have been either holidaying or had gone off to our places.
Yes, you may hold an upper hand over freshers but only if you can show that what you have learnt during the work experience is something that is substantial and has helped you add value to yourself as a professional as well as a person.

Are IITs partial to South Indians ? -
05-10-2008, 01:32 PM
Hello !
Iam a south Indian and a tamilian in particular. I want to know whether IITs are partial in offering admissions to south Indians and that too tamilians in particular. My friends are saying that most of the students(majority) are North Indians and the professors over there are also North Indians. Hence, I doubt whether IITs are averse to south indians and tamilians in particular. Please clear my doubt. Iam preparing to write JMET this year.

IITs take in students purely based on their merit and their ranks, whatever be the case. There is no question of any of the IIT being averse or being against any person because he is from a particular region or of a race. Of course, the ratio of people in any IIT may be weighted more towards people from a particular region since the IIT lies within that region, say from the north or the south. But even that is not true, if you see our batches in DoMS IIT Madras. In fact, there is healthy mix of people from all around India.
So don't worry about such things that are purely unsubstantiated. Simply work towards JMET and other MBA exams and do well. All the best!

Hi Rohit,
For placement figures, you can visit our website- DoMS IIT Madras
Some of the higher mathematics topics that you can go thru are:
1. Co-ordinate Geometry(St lines, Circles, Parabola)
2. Complex numbers
3. Basics of calculus(Limits, area under the curve etc)
4. Vectors
5. Matrices
For the complete list just refer to the JMET brochure. Rest of the JMET preperation is almost a subset of CAT preperation. I would suggest you to go thru last year JMET patterns. This may help you in deciding how much time to spend on higher maths topics. You can refer these topics from 11/12th Std maths textbooks. And if you want to keep it short and sweet, just dont spend too much time on all this and keep moving with your regular preperation.

Hey
Whatever your friend has said is absolutely non sense...
Non of the IIT s consider caste, region or language as the basis of selection.
Pls be very clear, if ones selection is truely based on his performance.

hi IITians...
well im one of those who is dreaming to be in IIT..
jus wanted to knw if profile plays an important role for getting calls or it is only d score...
to be more specific..
do u get calls on the basis of profile submittted??
no doubt the profile is important during the interview..
but for getting calls i guess the score should be enough..
or is it like symbiosis wer even if u get a good score still depends on the profile(how good it is or rather how much u have paid d managemnt.. so called setting in indianism)
please clarify this doubt if possible

Hi,
The criteria may vary from year to year. Last year, work experience was indeed considered along with the JMET score while giving the GT/PI calls. But it was just the number of years that were considered and not the work profile.
Last year's approximate stats went like this:
Last rank for freshers<1100
Last rank for people with one year experience<1250
Last rank for people with two or more years of experience<1400
Hope I have clarified your doubt.
