Nice one...
continuing the discussion.
Let's first have a look on what Chuck Blore said about the concept of advertising. According to him - it is the art of arresting the human intelligence just long enough to get money from it.
From word of mouth advertising to internet advertising, advertisements have came a long way. True as many of us rightly pointed out, it's the only medium to keep the consumer informed of new products and launches.
However advertisement is not a stand alone. If the quality of product is comprosmised then no matter how effective the ad is the consumer won't bother to buy the product again.
Again ads are of 2 types
1. Commercial - intended to establish a customer base of a particular company or product.
2. Non-commercial - intended to promote awareness towards issues of social concern
No doubt both influence the consumers either directly or indirectly.
Also the emergence of media and sports icons in advertisements highlights the importance and impact of advertisements in our lives. The ad culture is also responsible for giving rise to Ad agencies and hence creating means of employment. Ads are also a means of entertainment for many of us. Consistent advertising strategy helps to build a relationship with the consumer.
However in my view ads have the following negative influences:
1. Creates a kind of monopoly of some firms, which makes new firms hard to enter the market.
2. Encourages luxury
3. Leads to wastage of natural resources
4. Increases the cost of goods
5. Involves a lot of money.
Hence ads are a necessary evil.
