1. How are the placements for finance? What are the companies and the profiles that students are being offered . I wanted to raise this question because SJMSOM is widely known to be very strong in operations and systems.

2. What are the electives offered for finance . I did see in the ciricullam that there are around 12 courses that are mentioned . But are all of them being offered?

3. Will we have time to pursue other activities like preparing for CFA and other financial certifications . How many of you got time to complete such certifications?

Just to add on to the ramesh's post...

1) Please refer the placement thread givn in my signature....
2)This time the fin electives will be offered based on feedback of the students and hence the care shall be taken that the most important electives are taken and the rule of Min. 6 students stays as it is as mentiond by ramesh. Also the efforts are being made to float even more electives in each domain from next year, maybe we will get chance to study these new electives in our 4th semester but next batch would surely benefit a lot....
3) Yes, the junior batch(which will be senior batch in less thn one week now...) has surpassed the senior batch when it comes to giving certification exams...
already 15 students have cleared the first module of CAIA(Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst )--->CAIA Home and most of them are appearing for CAIA module-2 in September...
Apart from that....Around 14-15( 20% +)students are writting CFA Level-1 and Level-2 in June and almost same number would be writting the same in December.
Few Batchmates are also writting exams like PRM(Professional Risk Manager--->PRMIA - Training Certification) and FRM(Financial Risk Manager--->GARP : Global Association of Risk Professionals ) modules in the coming month... And all this is possible due to large number of Fin-enthusiasts in our batch(around 30-35 out of 74).

As far as time is concerned, you will have to manage that amidst several student activities and also the core acads which is the most important of all.......:new_bat_angel:

in case they'l call then ppl like me who hv other calls would hv joined other insti's n classes of other insti's start a month b4 iit's classes ... at that time if any1 will leave that insti for iit... that will b a straight loss of 2-3 lakhs... depending upon insti

@@@seniors
plz convey our concern to admission dept. n ask to refund if not full atleast 50% of fees... else do sth regardin this ...
. m waitlisted 8... so abit worried ..
thanx
our senior batch size is 53 bcoz total seats were less then (around 57-5.. seats increased last year (our batch) only..

Plus, even after paying up fees if there is any last minute drop out (i.e. 3-4 people dropping out just before commencement of class), it becomes impossible to issue new calls then as it's too late..

Viraj's post aptly sums it up, just to add a few points:

Apart from the regular electives shown on website, you may also get a chance to take electives from other dept of IIT (infact that's the beauty of being in IIT system ) .. An example would be Quantitative Finance which covers the modelling/quant aspects of FIN.

Apart from regular CFA, CAIA, FRM, PRM, some ppl from our batch are also interested in other globally recognized certifications like CFP.. it basically depends upon the enthusiasm of the batch; you guys can take it up as club activity (FIN club is getting stronger with each day) to discuss about the various certification alternatives and finally narrow down on a few to write.. And with certification fast becoming a trend, you always find some time out of the regular schedule to prepare for it :-)

@seniors,

Could someone give me a brief on core marketing / IT marketing profiles on offer?
Went through the reports which talk about companies and stats.
Would be great if someone could speak on the profiles on offer as well.

1) single rooms during the first year depend on the availability...for us we got single rooms by december during the first year,i.e after the first sem got over....but from second year..u would definitely get second rooms..

2) yes, you would get a one month vacation in december...few people do winter projects, many are busy preparing for finance/operations related certifications like cfa/caia/ncfm/apics etc etc...others opt to just chill out..

3) dont worry about this right now..u would get to know once u join..

4) the in-hand depends on the comapnies pay structure and the amount of tax savings that you can make..

Yes, you do get a month off in Dec. It is completely on your discretion how you spend those two months. Some people prefer to do internship, some prefer to take up certifications. However, the majority prefer to relax and have fun! After slogging out day and night in the first sem, not many want to slog for another month.

As for me, my winter holidays were perhaps the best one month for me during my stay at IIT. Firstly, I was involved in the organization of PAN-IIT 2006 which was held in Dec 2006. PAN-IIT is a Global IIT Alumni meet held every year. It was attended by more than 5000 IIT alumni. Many SOM students were very fortunate to work for the organization of an event of this scale.

Secondly, I did an internship of Corporate Strategy with M&M. The project was a great learning experience for me as I directly worked with the executive assistant to Anand Mahindra and the VP of Corporate Affairs in Mahindra.

Hence, there are lots of things to do! Its you who has to explore!

About the salary, the company which I would be joining has no variable component of the salary. However, some companies, like Sales profiles, tie up the salary with your Sales targets. In such companies, your variable component can be as high as 50% of your salary. Hence, it all depends on the company pay structure, your performance, your investments etc. The in hand salary can vary hugely based on these factors.

Cheers
Ramesh
