Seems like an age old thread has been bumped back to life 
Just a word of caution, what exactly XLRI tests by essays, nobody knows. For some of the candidates they do discuss the essays in the interviews ( XLRI as well as a few other colleges). For the rest (like me) no mention of the essays during the interviews.
You'll be given only a single sheet of paper and limited time ( around 10 to 15 mins). So you can forget about writing long stories.
Try to keep it short and to the point. Do not gas! ( i.e. beat around the bush) Apne baap log check karte hai, they can easily find out if you are fibbing or talking sense 
If you have time do try out a few essays at home itself. In fact a few of you can try some pre-decided topics and discuss your essays on this thread among yourselves. It'll help to bring in new ideas and views. Generally the topic is very simple, and usually on the current scenarios in the world.
Lastly and most important of all, it is not an elimination factor, atleast certainly not while selecting people for gd/pi. So do not worry much, and give it your best shot in those few minutes.
