I have noticed that some of the GIM alumni are in top management in their companies, Oracle, TIBCO, TBWA, Zydus Cadilla etc to name a few. And still Summer Placements remain GIM's Achilles heels. Plus these companies dont turn up for Final placements. Any particular reason for that.

I know it's a little too much to expect but i do wish that B-Schools were a little more transparent in the process. Not because we do not trust their judgment but because it is important that we know where we fell short.
I' sure it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to them to release how much we scored in each of the considered attributes like GD/PI, acads and work-ex, it would help us focus our preps the next time round. I fail to understand what reason they have to not tell us our scores.
Anyways I trust GIM will be fair in their admission process, I would just like to know what made the difference for me to be in second list against first.
I really thank the seniors for helping us all. They've been a great help. Cheers to u... Hopefully the next list will bring me better news

i totally agree.... what some other guys and john galt... are trying to say is that if there is weightage for everything and not just impression or mood and if the process is very fair why not display marks in every section like xat score , pi,gd, academic record, and experience.... for all the candidates appearing... then there wont be doubts and speculations.... when they can be clear enough to tell the weightage of things why not then tell the marks....
I WANT SENIORS TO GET THESE ISSUE IN NOTICE AND FROM NEXT YEAR THERE WONT BE SUCH PROBLEMS IF ADEQUATE STEPS ARE TAKEN....
THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE..... AND ATB TO CALL GETTERS...

Hi Rahul,
I must confess I am delighted at seeing people like you, Ppl who do their homework, and then come up with questions... It really has become a rarity these days.. I was always sure that GIM is in very safe hands of my juniors, now I am sure that it will continue to be so for more batches
Ok enough of compliments, now to answer your query..At GIM, the placements are an entirely student driven initiative, you will be charged a fee for the services of the placement cell. Once you join there will be a meeting called by the placement cell..Where you will be asked to write the list of companies you would love to join...
The placement cell gets a feel of what the inclination of the batch is and then goes after its business. Regarding advertising companies for ex TBWA.. and others , its not difficult to get them to campus, but the problem with advertising companies is that they dont pay that much of moolah.. sad to say but its a fact.. We have people in our batch who were advertising professionals, but then went for marketing profiles.
Not a single person expressed interest in going for advertising jobs, atleast for our batch.Had anyone expressed interest, definitely we would have approached those companies for final placements.
GIM doesnt have a big list of people in advertising Industry, and as years go by, some colleges end up sending more people to such industries and end up being famous for that, and hence account for a sizeable chunk of what an ad agency would recruit in a year , namely MICA, SIMC amongst others...
And as you would be aware about the purpose of taking summer interns .. its not just to get some work done, but to identify talent in advance.. so summer internships are also offered to colleges from where this sizeable chunk comes.
I know about a senior who did his summer internship in Lintas.. so the whole thing cant be ruled out, It depends on what you want...
Regarding Pharma, Its pretty much the same story, we have professors who had been in that Industry teaching us , plus it is a very domain specific industry, over here at GIM,people are interested in FMCG in marketing. I repeat, if your batch shows interest, it is absolutely no problem to bring pharma companies to GIM. But do keep in mind that they offer less, which invariably becomes the deciding factor at the end of the day.
This year the placement cell wanted to reduce the proportion of IT in the placement scene, and compensate with FMCG, it can partly be attributed to the fear of a slowdown in the IT sector.
We have an alumni network of over 1300 registered ppl, with a special committee dedicated to interacting with the alumni, send them monthly newsletters, hold reunions, alumni coming as visiting faculty programs is highly encouraged..
This alumni association is only 3 4 years old, prior that there was not much impetus on maintaining contact with the alumni, which has all changed now, the alumni of previous batches say 13 years ago ...they are in very senior positions and hence have considerable clout.. hence you can see the changes in average salaries 3.66, 5.41. 6.4,7.41
Having said all this , there are still certain drawbacks, I need not lie to you guys or bluff.. GIM at any day is at a disadvantage compared to colleges located in mumbai or any other metro when it comes to summer placements.. It is because at these metro's most companies have their offices, and hence it is not a hassle to go all the way to goa to recruit for summer interns ! Which is very easy in places lik bbay and all...
But this is not true when it comes to final placements... our batch had 100% summer placements so will yours, but to be frank we were not picked up as hotcakes.. it stretches for a period..
We got some great companies for summer internships.. like yahoo... deloitte, etc..
But I dont see any reason why someone of your calibre would not make it to any of the better companies that come to campus for summers..
Incase my reply doesnt satisfy you, please do reply back... I have an appointment at 10, will be able to reply to you after 11 30 at night..

I didn't make it.I feel terribly disappointed, this being my only call from a b-school.Its hard to fathom what went wrong. But I accept the rejection in its entirety. Its time for some serious introspection.peace out.

Since, this is a season of compliments. I think its high time that I thank you, Mandar and Rahul. To be honest, I was never sure about GIM (You know that) but it was only after I had a word with you, then Mandar and recently with Rahul that now I am pretty much certain about what I need to do.
I am not specifically intrested in all those companies I mentioned. I mentioned them because they represent different sectors. GIM placements are generally dominated by ITES/IT so all this slowdown thing was bothering me a bit. You mentioned about deliberate shift from IT, I guessthats good enough.
I am more interested in core metal companies and I am glad that vedanta features there. The fact that we get to specify companies we want comforts me even further.
As for alumni network, with people like you already there, I dont think anyone of us can ask for better brand ambassadors. So, no worries on that front.
There is one more area wherein I would like to have further insights. Lot of industrial development was lined up by Goa IDC. Was it part of the much talked about SEZ? And goa having one of the busiest ports, do we get lot of SCM/logistics profiles? Not interested in such profiles but had this thing in mind.
Is somebody from class of 2009 coming down to NCR? I think we can plan a meet if somebody is coming and has time to spare.
Once again, thanks for your inputs and all of us who finally land up at GIM in June would definitely take the legacy forward.

I am glad that your queries have been addressed. Regarding SCM, there are a lot many opportunities, my roommate had done a BPR/SCM project at DLink, the VP was so pleased with his work, that he offered him a International Logistics consultant position after summers.
We have the Mormugao port, plus lots of Industries where logistics and all can easily be studied...
I am also very interested in scm, working to get myself a CPIM certificate very soon..
and regarding meets... dont worry .. we have a long tradition of organizing summer meets at different metros, where the seniors who are doing their summers arrange for a meet with you guys ....
You get an opportunity to talk to them in great detail face to face...
I will just say one thing here ... at GIM students come first.... you will realise this when you come here.... Please do read the pdf that I posted some time back...
It is more than an Institute to us, and we are very happy to welcome you all ..Congratulations for making it to GIM
