I was one of the 17 ppl present thre during the first counselling, and what happened was, we being called for the 1st counselling, were not even offered the MQ seat. so a few ppl asked them how was it that the ppl higher in merit would not even have a choice for MQ.

So what they did was, they gave the 17 ppl an option to apply for MQ seat right there. Now these ppl were categorically told that IF YOU APPLY FOR A MQ SEAT, YOU WILL BE OUT OF CONSIDERATION FOR THE ML.

If they havent suddenly changed thier decision, which would be ridiculuos, this should apply.As we would be out of merit, nobody except one i.e. rank 299 there, applied for MQ. everybody preferred to wait for merit.

hope this sorts out a few issues.

Guyz - Just now had called up NM.. When queried abt this issue of MQ seats upgradation to Merit seats - a lady said - in such scenarios upgradation would always happen.. I even did a double check asking her,when some of my friends(read fellow PGites) had enquired about the same,they got answers saying a MQ seat would never get upgraded irrespective of vacancies arising out of cancellations.. For that she replied - No,No.. upgradation would always happen.. And when I asked - roughly around what time can we expect the 2nd list,she replied - No idea.. When I asked last year around what time had the 2nd list came out,for that too she replied - No idea.. Nevertheless if her reply is authentic,atleast the issue regarding the upgradation is clear now !

I think this was an on-the-spot decision the authorities had taken.. May be they would have got a little infuriated when ppl queried in what way they didnt hav the option of opting an MQ seat and hence they could have said - if you opt for it,then thats it - no possibility of upgradation to merit seat.. And may be - this(which possibly applies only to people between ranks - 282 to 300) is the reason for some confusion regarding upgradation in this thread itself..

Now even im getting a bit tensed ... I know buck_was has rank of 52 something and he has paid fees. He has many other calls as well including IIMs. So i think waitlist movement will be there in mid-april after IIM results. Having tough time waiting and worse, my manager got to know abt my NM call

i dont think they can have separate admission rules for ppl between ranks - 282 to 300
and the rest of the crowd
a rule is a rule applies to ppl of all caste , age, sex and RANKS

this means curtains for me at rank 619 . was hoping to get a MQ seat . now if the higher ranks who have been alloted MQ pay the fee , i am virtually out .

I say it could have been a separate rule(on-the-spot one) because registering for MQ seats had closed officially on the 24th March,Monday and by the time the people ranked between 282 and 300's turn came up at the 1st counselling,I am sure it would have been Tuesday or Wednesday.. And on tuesday since already the MQ registration had closed,this could have only been a separate on-the-spot-decision made for these candidates(who had been given provisional admission prior to 1st counselling) especially after they have queried the authorities - why do they not get an opportunity to book for an MQ seat?(as posted by ankit_insane in his previous post).. [And they would have asked this only on a Tueday or Wednesday cos before that anyways MQ registration was open to all !!! ]..

And,
a rule is a rule applies to ppl of all caste , age, sex and NOT RANKS [People with better ranks always enjoy better options !!! ]

Hi,

I got a call confirming my MQ seat conversion. (....yups....even I am surprised they called !!! )
I specifically asked them abt convertion to merit list and they said the upgradation from MQ to Merit seat will be done and the balance 2.5 lac will be returned.
she also told me the merit list has closed at 281
and MQ list at 424......for the first list.

I guess we can rest the matter for now and just hope that better sense prevails.

Hi all,
I am one of thsoe disappointed souls who attended counselling on 25th...let me put what the registrar told all of us... regarding MQ...till last year the MQ seats were promptly upgraded to merit if there is a chance and the amount was refunded but it is a management decision which the mgmt takes every year...so there is no rule or policy stating tat MQ will be upgraded...for this year mgmt hasnt yet taken any decision regarding upgrading...registrar quoted "i am also an employee and i cant guarantee the decision taken by mgmt so u ppl have to take a call" hope it demystifies the things about MQ.
