Trushin/Anuj/other seniors @IITR... any feedback on the PIs/candidates? What was the general mood among the panel at the end of the process? Their opinions/generalisations, for instance "PIs were decent", "ALL candidates were dumb", "Most candidates were interesting"... that kind of crap...

AIR 793, fresher

The 2 topics given in the GD were
1) Death of Socialism
2) Scientists should not enter politics

I was in the mood to speak about socialism as I had been reading up about socialism, capitalism etc. but EVERYONE else wanted to go for the second topic and I just didnt bother to speak too much (yeah, crazy :crazyeye:, I know). So you can say I screwed up my GD despite being the only girl there. I should've taken advantage of that, right? Well, I didn't.

I think my interview was splendid though.

• They asked me my hobbies, and when I listed them all out, they asked how come I ended up doing engg. as I'm a very creative person. They even suggested I should go into animation :P
• They asked who my fav teacher at college is, and why. Then they asked 2nd fav as well
• They asked where else I have calls from and where I'd like to join eventually. I answered pretty honestly about why not other IIT's, thought of pretty interesting cons about those places. Full marks for originality here I think
• They seemed impressed, probably coz they must have heard pretty different answers from me. I usually speak very honestly and spontaneously, so none of my answers were pre-thought of, that must have impressed them if they were, indeed, impressed. They asked "Don't you think 2 years of management education would iron out all the creases?" They said something about me being different and don't I think that I would lose that individuality once I go through rigorous management training.

I think my answers were pretty convincing and I had a great time at the interview

18th Feb Morning Slot
Here goes my story:

I reached on 17th evening and got a very warm reception...
The hospitality was awesome!!!

Next morning...we had to report at 8:30
The seniors gave a presentation on the course, activities & placements at Doms followed by questions
from the prospective students (us) which were answered by the HOD.
Then we were called for document verification followed by GD and PI.

GD
We were a grp of 7 (4girls,3boys!)
We were given two topics and we had to choose 1
Topic we chose : Should Postage Stamps have pics of youth icons like Sania,Sachin & SRK?

Time alloted : 1min to think,7mins to discuss and then 1min to summarize
Panel Members : 4

We had a decent discussion..no fish market,1 girl was very aggressive(I tried to moderate),on the contrary 1 guy ws
almost mum...after the discussion,the panel asked d guy(who ws silent) to summarize and he did a decent job.

There were 4 panels and I ws interviewed by Panel1

1 was the HOD himself! : H
2 was another old man : O
3 was a lady : L
4 myself : I

I entered the room and wished dem.
H : Plz seat down...
H : Well...u've a very unique name...
I : (wid a smile) sir,just unique?dont u find it beautiful?
All of dem laughed...
H : O yes..definitely...its a beautiful name...wat does it mean?
I: Sir,it means As bright as gold!
O:so wat qualities of gold do u possess?
I : gave a witty answer
L : dn wat does Swarnim means?
I : answered
The discussion on my name vis-a-vis comparison to gold (including chemical properties of gold!) continued for a gud 2-3mins.
H: But gold is expensive...
I: Sir,good things come at a price!!!
Again..they all were smiling!

I: answered (had read an article about Habeeb in Sunday Times last yr!)
Panel ws very impressed!
H: OK..comment on your hairstyle!!!
I : gave a very witty answer again...
O : (wid a smile) very clever...
H: Diff b/w a plant and a tree?
I:answered
L:does every plant grows to become a tree?
I:answered
O: ok..tel us diff types of plants!
I : (wid a smile) sir,there are herbs,shrubs and many other types of plants..but since m not a student of botany,wud like to answer
ur ques slight differently...apart frm biological plants..there r plants like oil plants,steel plants etc.
The panel ws highly impressed ( O even said - Wah!)

H:Wat is a spa?
I:answered
L: ok..which sector does it belong to,Healthcare or Hospitality?
I:Ma'm ..m not 100% sure but it can belong to either
O:Justify how..
I:answered wid examples ( d panel ws convinced)
H: ok..now,listen carefully,think and dn answer
I: sure sir
H: He talked about science for a gud 1min..dn concluded dat science is destructive.Then,he talked abt Religion and finally talked abt Art
(I ws wondering wats d ques and whn d story wil end! :smile
H: ok..here i finish..now u comment on watever i spoke..if possible relate dem wid examples!
I: (thought for 10-15 sec) then replied in a very structered manner
1st i talked abt science...told dem dat everything has 2 sides-pros and cons..gave examples...dn I talked abt religion and related it wid science
(religion is identified by faith and in science also,every invention or technological advancement starts wid a hypothesis and until & unless 1 has faith in it,
one cant progress..blah blah)
similarly..talked abt Art and again related it wid science(Art means creativity,thinking out of d box...our world wud hav become stagnant if we didnt think out of d box and made so many things pos...blah blah )
Finally,i concluded by saying dat Science is both an art and religion and its not science which is destructive..its human brain which misuses the power
of science!
Now..dis time the panel literally applauded me

H: aha...Mr.X is d owner,rite?
I:yes sir..and Mrs.X d chairperson
H: (wid a smile) Ma'm,u know everybody in dis country? Gr8!
I: (wid a smile) well sir..i knw ppl associated to d institutions/org which I hav been a part of..also, I ws d college representative and attended meetings wid d chairprsn..dats how I knw her...
O: asked me about my surname(whdr its a title or a surname)
I:answered in detail(mine is a title)
L: ok..if u become a part of IITR,wat changes/ddition wud u like 2 make wid immediate effect?(wid a smile)Give us a GOLDEN idea...
O: (sarcastically) yes,yes,lets c..how bright is gold!:sarcasm:
I: addressed to HOD - sir,if u remember..in d morning aftr d ppt..a candidate had asked u why Rural Mgmt cant b a part of d course curriculam in IIT
and u had answered dat since Doms is jst 1 of d 27 deptt..there r procedural hiccups in bringing evn a minute change..so it'll take sm time...
H:yes..i remember
I: (2 d entire panel) agreed..but there can be many students who r interested in Rural mgmt..so wat we can do is start a Rural Mgmt Club for such students
where they can hav guest lectures,workshops,do research work and contribute to d rural sector....and dis wont hav any procedural hiccups!
Once again..they were happy

L: Wat value addition wil u giv 2 d institute
I:answered
O: ok..last ques,which IIT and why?
I:gave dem a covincing reply
At dat very moment..HOD had 2 attend a call
L: ok..we wud luv 2 hav u here..thank u very much
I:thanked dem...waited 4 d HOD but dn left whn gestured by d other 2 panelists
(My interview lasted for more dn half an hr and it was gr8...I thoroughly enjoyed myself and also made them laugh a lot!)

P.S : After 5min,i was called back...they had 2 take my signature in a sheet..d nxt candidate ws already in...aftr i signed,the HOD said : "I want 2 giv u a
compliment for d excellent interview dat u gave and it ws a pleasure talking 2 u! "

when can we expect the IIT R's final merit list....

how many waiting lists cleared last year....and what was the last waiting list number cleared for the merit list...

Cant say bout all the panelists... but my panel was kinda impressed with the candidates coming in on most of the slots... though they did have some dumb n not so interesting ones coming in too.. .. which was rather surprising for me cos the ppl comin in this yr had huge volumes of work-ex.. infact i met very few freshers comin in this yr for the GD/PI process.. seems like work-ex ppl have made the freshers bite dust even in written exams this yr..

Wr have no idea bout the merit list of this yr... but still don expect it to be out newhere before all the IITs are through with there processes..

Last yr we got an initial merit list of arnd 60 odd ppl and then waiting list of ppl with merit ranks till 150 odd were cleared.. not sure bout the last merit ranker to get through.. ill confim on tht n get back to u all

This time IIT Bombay has said in its call letter that it is coming out with result before 19th march... but as you are saying it should be after all IITs process....I am nt getting any connection here,,,,please clarify....
