Re: MBA Operations - 24-06-2009, 10:50 AM

I am currently pursuing my Mechanical Engineering and am really interested in pursuing MBA-ops. What i want to know is whether an MBA in ops holds value only with relevant work experience before pursuing MBA or freshers directly going for MBA without work-ex will be equally well-absorbed in the industry? Please shed some light on this issue.

Re: MBA Operations - 03-07-2009, 06:25 PM

hi all,
i am an electronic enginner and i have just taken admission in MBA.i am interested in building my career in operations but in our college we have ops and marketing as dual spec option.

i want to know how can i best use my course to get a profile in operations during placemnts with a good package considering the fact that its an average b-school?

also,i have heard that there are few certifications like APICS which are very much recognized in industry and these certis give an edge during placements.if this holds true then is it advisable to start preparing for this certi during my MBA?

which module is more hot ,CPIM or CSCP?

hope seniors can throw some light on this facet!!!!

Both the certifications hold different value proposition. CPIM deals with the intricacies of inventory and production management with the concepts of scheduling and resource planning stealing the show. CSCP takes a holistic view of Supply chain management and IT implementation part.
So if you looking at a career in Manufacturing, CPIM is a good choice. But from a consulting point of view, CSCP holds the edge.

hi,thanks for your invaluable feedback.i had just given my CPIM BSCM exam few days back.i was more interested in CSCP but got to know that CSCP can be done by people who have atleast 2 years of relevent expereince or who have already done with their CPIM.

with my MBA running with full speed ,hardly get time to study for my CPIM,just wanted to know if people in MBA are pursuing CPIM along with thier regular curriculam and whats thier approach with this certification.

thanks and Regards,
SAURABH

A good number of people from Bschools with established Operations and Supply Chain Mgmt dept write the CPIM, CSCP tests in tandem with their usual course curriculum. For individual modules in CPIM, on an avg an effort of 50hrs is required. I dont think taking out that much time is too difficult.

As far as Operations/ SCM is concerned APICS is the only institution that carries weightage and recognition in industries. You can also go for Six Sigma Certification from KPMG and likes if you are interested in quality control.
