Hi...
Hope someone can help me out here....
Will TISS give me enough exposure? As in, the reason i wanted an MBA was not only to get a good pay package, but also because i wanted exposure and experience. Will an MA in HR in TISS do that?

The school is situated in Deonar, which is quite at some distance from the main Mumbai. Mumbai as you know, houses a nubmer of B-Schools which are among national top 10. Like SPJIMR, NMIMS, JBIMS, IITB, NITIE, etc. Now being at TISS will mean you will have to make some extra efforts on 'your part'. The school being a govt one, means red tape and the process would be slow. The social studies junta's environment, I guess won't be that much happening!
I can understand what you mean to say. On that front, if you get any other of the top-10 B schools (or among mentioned here), go there and leave TISS. Otherwise, an MA in HR from TISS will always be respected in the industry, even if s/he is dumb.

hi
i feel deonar is very much a part of mumbai , and the exposure one gets is nt proportional to the distance from the heart of a city :satisfie:
exposure is a word very wide to define and make something out of it.it would mean alumni ,faculty etc etc.
for information, JBIMS is affliated to University of Mumbai and so is NITIE and IITB, so being a govt college is not a handicap if we follow too many processes.
to delve more into "exposure" - all i can say is that TISS provides a fieldwork for 2 days a week, so for 4 semesters you will get to work in 4 different companies, may be 4 different sectors.so when you enter or re-enter the corporate world, you ll get a strong idea abt the HR as a whole. this is the USP of TISS, which is yet to be replicated in any of the HR schools in country..
may be initially the badge of TISS will give u an entry into an org and there on its the student or employee to peform or prove yourself, i believe this is the case with anyother insitute not just TISS....

Just to add soemthing more about deonar :
Same distance as SPJAIN from Main Mumbai
Same distance as IITB from Main Mumbai
Same or Less than NITIE from Main Mumbai
No offense .. What I feel is that TISS is one of the best institutes for HR in not only India but whole of ASIA at par with XLRI, and for the top there is always competition and you would find the best in the class, so if you want to go for it , then give your hundred percent dont back off, but then whether IIM or TISS whatever, you have to be sure what you want to do in life !! If you feel that HR is made for you and then enter TISS . TISS Rocks for HR anytime !!

Re: Tiss-hrm-lr-2008-2010 -

My dear friends,
Till now I believed we can’t debate over the facts!
1) The distance… Distance as such doesn’t mean anything. Six feet under (Manorama?) and sex feet upar (Got it, Amitabh!) have heck of a difference. And differences are still there if we change that to inches. Moral of the story: Direction matters. Direction and distance together only make sense! Deonar is world famous for its slaughter houses, and Powai, for the lake, the IIT and the Heeranandani Gardens. Now you will say that “this is based on the way we see things” and “this is ‘also’ subjective”, and some other typical HR stuffs. I am sorry that in my previous comment, I didn’t use direct sentences; I was just trying not to hurt feelings (or egos?). It doesn’t matter how much Deonar is in Mumbai; what matters is how much Mumbai is in Deonar?
2) I feel I received that many beautiful “groans” because I encroached the victory ground of the TISSers. If you don’t want my wisdom (ha!), who loses?
3) I didn’t mean anyhow to demean TISS, as I think some of you perceived my comment were meant to. In fact, I commented that even a dumb from the institute would be respected. EVER seen such a compliment? Guys, come on! You too have got it (I mean sense of humour..). And I commented that if you were getting top 10 B-Schools in India, then you could leave TISS. Is not that a compliment? Come on! If you say TISS is better than any of the top 10 rating B-Schools, at least I won’t accept it. TISS is hardly a B-School! Don’t you know why B-Schools guys are called MBAs? Masters of Business Administration need to study ‘business’, and only specialise in one/two subjects as majors/minors! While at TISS, you come out as nothing but a HR guy; an MA in HRM&LR, as they say. Not everyone comes ready for Arts. It is life and the ‘choices’ that make them ‘artists’. I am not putting it down, but we don’t debate over facts, guys!
4) Some minor facts/corrections, like NITIE is not under Mumbai University, it is autonomous. And you should know that SP Jain has grown into this much only after it disowned the Mumbai University’s affiliation. Institutes in Mumbai like KJ Somaiya run courses both through the university and on their own, and declare the ‘benefits’ of both. If you say that just because Railways have given dividend to the government, it has became more efficient than the Jet Airways, sorry, I won’t buy that. And if TISS seniors say that, then humm, I won’t comment, because I don’t want to keep collecting “No thanks” all through my life!
5) Well, I never thought that I would have to confess. But now I think I should. I have a ‘sense of humour’ which is different from others. The reason being that we all are unique. Having a different approach doesn’t make us ‘more’ or ‘less’ humans. And one of the major success factors of a manager is how s/he handles feedbacks. Feedback, as you know is again a tender word I used here for criticism (see, you got it right this time!)
Guys, please carry on. I am an old horse, who has finished his journey (really?). If I am writing this in the midst of my trimester-I exams, it shows (off?) my love and comradeship (aah, so political!) I can understand the zeal of both the novice and the champions (at it again?). One advice would be: don’t listen to advices of “experts”. Create your own destinies. Tomorrow won’t take feedback from yesterday, in order to sketch the future (and this is original..).
Wishing you a good time and grand successes ahead..
