Hi...
good so see your interest in knowing all about the exam.
let me tell you why the cutoff is so?
First, as you know that the paper is for 120 min. The duration of the test is 120 min. But you might get only 115 min, considering the time spent on scanning, signing and other distractions.
The trend of the paper says that toppers of the test score anywhere between 75-80 in general. There will be a huge difference between the top score and subsequent ranks.
That means you get an opportunity to read all the questions but solve 100 questions. The quant part is the one where the contribution towards the total score will be minimum.
In DI, you can score 1 mark per min on an average. In quant, you can score 4-5 marks (10 in the case of the topper) in 20 min. As the sectional cutoffs are enforced, we cannot ignore any section.
Therefore, the topper now scored 65-70 marks (after negetive marking) from other areas in 90 min. which is the best (coz, there will be difficult questions and speed breaking questions in other areas too).
That is why the top score will be close to 80 in the case of topper.
But a score of 67+ (as per JMET 2005/2006/2007) will fetch u a rank less than 300.
Last year for a score of 65-66, the ranks were between 400-500. Arpit aka garg.arpit scored 64 for which he got a rank of 691. Look at the huge variation.
For a score of 58.5, the rank was 1651. In just 6 marks, the rank jumped by 1000.
So, that is how the test and the usual scoring.
The paper being moderate depends on how well you were able to get more marks in less time. If you ask me, it is above moderate paper.
I hope now you have a clear picture of the test, scoring and ranks.
Please be free to ask any questions regarding your preparation.
