Why SJMSOM?
Besides
placements and
fees, there are a lot more significant reasons to be a part of SJMSOM, IIT Bombay.
I am elucidating some of them here:
Very strong industry orientation:
-
Diksha: Guest lecture series where CEOs and MDs are invited to share their knowledge
-
Leadership Lectures: Series of lectures organized by the faculty and the students
-
Continuum Series: A rolling seminar series for all domains of management. Check out the
Systems seminar and
Consulting Seminar.
-Industry Seminars: SMF Convention, HCM Seminar, Civil Aviation Seminar
-IIT Events: Plethora of IIT events where SOM is closely involved. For eg. PAN-IIT, Distinguished Lecture Series, Eureka etc
-SOM has close association with NEN, TiE, CII and is a part of various events organized by them
Student Activities:
Inspite of being a small batch, there are numerous events which are completely organized solely by the students. You have already seen this in the admission process which was managed by the students. Even the placements is being managed by students. Additionally, the students take part in the organization and participation in various IIT events. Hence, all students get a holistic experience in management and gain invaluable experience in event management and people management.
Here are some of the events:
-
Avenues: Our flagship bschool festival
-Industry seminars like Diksha and Continuums
-
L!VE: The student magazine of SJMSOM
-
Ecell Activities:
Eureka,
Eweek
-
Barcamp: An unconference and an excellent platform to interact with Entrepreneurs and VCs. A new trend started by the current batch and would be held 2-3 times a year
-
Mood Indigo, the IIT cultural fest: People from SOM participate in events like Dance, Rock Show, Fashion Show and much more!
-Theatre: Plays, Skits, Drama. Check out a
pic from a drama SOM performed yesterday
-Dance Competitions: SOM team has participated in most of the IIT level dance competitions like Gyrations, AIDS
-Sports: SOM regularly participates in Inter IIT Sports meet, PG Sports, Hostel Sports
-Besides the above events where SOM has participated or been a part of the core organizing team, there are a plethora of events where we have the privilege of listening to great speakers or just having fun as spectators. Some of them are:
esummit,
Techfest,
GJ events etc
Interaction with SJMSOM PhDs:
SJMSOM has a distinguished PhD program and some of the students include IPS Officer, CEOs, Directors of corporate houses. To name a few Mr Arvind Agrawal (CEO, RPG Spencer’s), Mr Nandkumar Saravade (IPS) - Director - Cyber Security and Compliance, NASSCOM, Mr Pankaj Phadnis (Group Vice-President, Wadia Group). A few alumni include Mr Ganesh Natrajan (Deputy Chairman and MD, Zensar Technologies Ltd.), Mr Hasit Joshipura (President and ED, Johnson & Johnson Ltd). It’s a great experience to have few of them as your classmates as the PhDs attend a lot of SOM courses.
Strong Entrepreneurship Culture:
SJMSOM has very strong entrepreneurial culture reflected through very strong initiatives like:
-Organizing events by Eclub SJMSOM
-Organizing of various events with Ecell, IIT Bombay
-SOM has consistently been in the Top 5 teams in Eureka: The biggest bplan competition in Asia
-Close association with NEN and TIE
-Entrepreneurship seminar Navonmesh in Avenues
-Being in close contact with the IIT B incubator SINE
-Some of the faculty are themselves entrepreneurs
Infrastructure:
I don’t need to say much about it as most of you have already seen the IIT B campus. You can see some images
here and
here
Brand IIT:
Regarding Brands, although the brand IIT is more known for its technical excellence for its UG course, the brand in itself carries a lot of weight. Its highly regarding in the industry, specially outside India. This helps us to attract excellent faculty and eminent speakers and guests for our seminars. The weight of this brand is palpable when we attend seminars, IIT alumni meets and other similar forums.
Please Note: I have not spoken about the excellent faculty, pedagogy, course content,
ability to take courses from other IIT depts etc at SOM. Academics is something which every college would claim to be good at. However, we strongly believe that the academic rigour at SOM is one of the best across bschools in India.
About the rankings, it has been discussed at length how SOM had a significant disadvantage in the PG ranking due to the perception based crowd sourced methodology. We wont discuss that further. At the end of the day, its not the rankings, but the actual quality and the industry perception which matters!
Cheers
Ramesh
