Let's put it this way. Some 70, 000 people wrote XAT last year. People who got above 99 percentile in that would be 700, right? Assuming that about half of them didn't clear the sectionals, we would still have 350. XL has only 180 seats, counting both BM and PM& IR. Can't let all of them in, can we? (And I haven't even counted the 97 percentilers and 98 percentilers who get final calls, like Mr. Bugz above.)
Speaking from my experience last year (6 interview calls - 3 rejects, 2 converts, 1 unconverted waitlist) it's not just percentile that counts. Everything counts - your academic record, your extracurricular activities, your interview plus GD performance, your work experience, your communication skills, your confidence.. Hell - for all you know, even what kind of a guy they interviewed right before you counts.
But at the end of the day - if they think that you'll fit in well at that insti, you'll get through.
(Fellow XLers, if that sounds familiar - yeah, I think I picked that up from the encouraging words our seniors gave us during SIP. )

Remember the XAT score is only one of the criteria for selection, it is not the only one. Otherwise, what's the need for having a GD/PI? GD/PI is there so that the admin can have a personal interaction with each candidate and gauge the person to see if he/she can fit into XLRI. Lots of other things matter like your acad background (which shows whether you've been a consistent hardworker), work-ex (if you can provide some value addition), etc. The post GD/PI is not tough, it is just that some ppl just got nervous and probably bungle up the whole thing, which is rather unfortunate. You just have to be yourself. Don't worry about these things now. For now, concentrate on getting a good XAT score and making the shortlist.
