Alumni Speak -
12-06-2007, 09:05 AM
The time, which I spent in the environment of IITK, MBA classes, Hostel, Library and of course in extra curricular activities, is influencing my carrier and life in a big way. The same is true for everyone. The learnings, competency and confidence which is gathered over a period of two years by each MBA student with the help of able faculty and talented classmates is incomparable and is very unique to IIT Kanpur. I recall those moments with passion and wish more and more heights to all of you and IIT Kanpur. Tons of thanks to our alma mater!
Lalan Prasad Gupta (MBA 2003)
Senior Executive Assistant to Group CEO

As for me, I would put my time at IITK as the best phase of my life. It was the first, and till date the only, duration for which I was off home, but I never realized it was the case! Be it for my friends, my classmates, the faculty, the knowledge, the environment, the culture or something else, it was truly magnificent. My life changed during my stay at the campus, and I can feel the difference now that I am off it. Such is the power of association with IITK that I have already made 3 trips to the campus in the last 6 months since I completed my course.
It?s very difficult to stay out of touch from the place and people that changed you!

A roadmap to MBA at IITs
Studying management courses at different levels is an option the Indian Institutes of Technology provide. Here is an outline of what they have on offer.
THE Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) in New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kanpur, Khargpur and Roorkee produce world-class engineers and technologists, who go on to hold key industry positions both in India and abroad. Still, the institutes feel the need for more professionals with business management skills after the economic reforms in 1991.
As a result, all the leading IITs have launched the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programme. The IITs also offer the Doctoral (Ph.D.) programmes in all functional areas of business management such as finance, marketing, economics, human resource management and international business.
Cutting edge
It is worth noting that a degree from IIT, irrespective of whether it is a B.Tech., MBA, Ph.D., M.Tech., M.Phil or M.Des, gives its holder an `edge' in the job market within and outside the country.
As institutions of national importance, IITs have been given the power to offer master's degrees and Ph.Ds, While the IITs consider master's degree holders in commerce, economics or psychology, with a first class and the University Grants Commission Junior Research Fellowship for the Ph.D programme, there is mismatch as far as eligibility for the MBA programme is concerned.
Although the IITs are charging fees for the MBA programme, there are number of scholarships for meritorious students and those who get ranks in the course and different papers, ranging from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 1 lakh.
These awards have been instituted in all IITs. Generally, the screening of the applicants are done based on JMET, but the total weight assigned for Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) score in the selection process is 65 per cent. The interview, group discussion and work experience carry 20 per cent, 10 per cent and 5 per cent weightage respectively. Final year students are also eligible to apply.
Entrance test
Some IITs admit only engineers for the MBA/Master of Management Programme. However, the IITs have together introduced Joint Management Entrance Test (JMET) as a screening for the MBA programme.
It is a 150-minute test held at 28 centres in the country, including Bangalore, Ernakulam, Hubli, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Madurai, Vijaywada, Mumbai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kolkata, Ranchi, Patna, Rourkela, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Kanpur, Allahabad, Bhopal, Jabalpur, Roorkee, Lucknow and Jaipur.
The JMET test is held in December every year and candidates have to apply for the test in September or October. Application forms can be obtained from the IITs or assigned commercial banks.
Candidates appearing for the final examination of a qualifying degree can also apply. IITs have a 15 per cent reservation for Scheduled Castes and 7.5 per cent for Scheduled Tribes. Reservation for the physically handicapped is given in accordance with Government of India rules.
IIT Bombay
IIT Bombay established the School of Management (SoM) in 1995 with the objective of transforming professionals into `Renaissance leaders'. Though the SoM (renamed as Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management recently) was originally set up in collaboration with other departments in the IIT such as the Departments of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics and Computer Science.
It has grown into a full-fledged independent school over the past four years. The flagship programme of SoM is the master of management (MoM) for which 60 students are selected on the basis of JMET scores, a group discussion and interview.
Students are required to pay Rs. 90,000 per annum as fee, which includes single-room hostel accommodation on campus.
After two semesters of classroom learning, students get an opportunity to do a summer internship for two months. In addition to this two-year full-time (four-semester) programme, IIT Bombay also offers a three-year part-time course for the working professional.
Eligibility (for full-time MoM) is BE/ B.Tech./M.Sc. with first class.
SoM requires minimum two years of work experience for part-time MoM registration, in addition to the above mentioned eligibility criteria.
Contact address: Head, SoM, IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai - 400 076.
IIT Delhi
The Department of Management Studies at IIT Delhi came into existence in 1993. Responding to the industry's needs, IIT Delhi launched its MBA programme in July 1997 as a two-year full-time course, with a focus on technology management, telecom management and consultancy management.
After taking the JMET, aspirants are required to purchase the IIT Delhi application form and apply separately. To be eligible, the applicant needs to have a first class in BE, B.Tech., pharmacy, master's degree in commerce, economics, physics, chemistry, maths, statistics or computer science. A maximum of 60 students are admitted for the course, and the fee is Rs 50,000 per annum, plus hostel charges.
IIT Delhi also offers a three-year part-time MBA for executives, with the organisation's sponsorship.

IIT Kharagpur

The programme, known as master of business management (MBM), admits only about 30 students every year. Applicants must be first class degree holders in B.Tech., BE, M.Sc., economics or commerce. Selection is based on JMET scores, a group discussion and interview.

IIT Madras

The rising complexity of the market place, relentless pace of competition through newer technologies, increased globalization of business operations, declining barriers in trade and unprecedented changes in the information and communication technologies have all made a technologically endowed MBA essential for the modern enterprise.
