How about adding how many seats are there also for each b-school. for example, IIM B gave 330 final calls for 240 seats. This info is very important, especially for schools like IIM I, which gives confirmed calls 3.5 times the number of seats ( 676 final calls for 180 seats ) BEFORE the first waitlist.

hi harsahdK,
I just want to know why IIMS give confirmed offers > the seats,What's harm in keeping them in WL and give offers =the number of seats????
I know overlapping of calls is one of the excuse but what if more no. of people accept the offer ?Does IIMs have the autonomy to increase their seats on their discretion powers?
I know this is not the right thread to ask this question but i asked this question to many people but havenot got a satisfactory reply yet......
Any convincing reply is welcomed!!!!!!!!!!!

Why extra calls ?
to cover overlapping calls. thats the only reason. over the years, each IIM ( for that matter, other instis too ), get a very good idea of how many people will eventually take up the offer. i doubt there are large swings in this proportion, other than the slight differences due to improvement in the b-schools perception and stuff. its just follows the rules of statistics and probability.
So most instis give extra calls with some safe margin. For example, if they believe that they'll need to give out 800 final calls to fill all seats, they'll give only 600, maybe, and fill up the rest through the waiting list.
the reason they do is because if they depend on the waiting lists to fill all the seats, they'll have to do a lot more iterations ( announce confirmed candidates, give time to pay up, announce confirmed candidates again ). For every round, they have to give atleast 10 days for the students to pay up.
For example, consider IIM I. they gave out 676 final calls. even with this high a number, they will end up filling the last few seats ONLY after the session begins. It goes on till that late. If they had given only 180 calls, they'd go crazy updating the waitlists, and have a problem on their hands on 30th june with tons of seats empty. its ok to fill up 10-15 seats after the session starts, but they wouldnt want to do that with 40-50 seats. wouldnt do wonders for their image.
yes, the IIMs do take in more students in case more people take up the offers than they expected. I dont know how it works out approval-wise, but it has happened. IIM L, for example, took in 270 students for 240 seats in 2005, if what I have read somewhere on PG is correct. Something went wrong with their calculations.

puys,
i have a humble request. This thread is NOT to discuss why instis give out a HUGE WL or no WL at all. This thread is just to put all the numbers of the WL. Kindly stick to the agenda.
Thanks
