Re: IIT's - GD/PI experiences - 01-03-2004, 10:28 AM

back from IIT Bombay
so much to write and so it would be a pretty long post

well i will first start off with what everybody would like to hear - my GD and PI experiences ( )

had my gd,pi on 28th feb. Was staying at IIT-B hostel itself . Reproting time 8:00 ( damn, so early !!). 2 other friends ( from IIIT-H) also had the morning schedule . . Reached the SJMSOM building. Engineers with ties and coats and trousers and what not :mg were all there. 8:00- 9:00 presentation by the seniors. Nothing much
here. GD started soon after. Was a typical case study. As far as i remeber it was something like this

" Naresh is an accountant in a small firm in bangalore( he had done his Mcom and DBA course ). The job initially looked promising but after 1 year naresh found the work monotonous. The firm also was small and there were only few levels between him and the senior most position and growth and rise was near to impossible. In desperation naresh starts looking for a new job. He also starts to vent out his anger by talking to boss. Boss reacts by saying that finding new job in this scenario is difficult . Anyhow naresh soon finds a job but as a teacher in a school and leaves his current job. Boss when comes to know abt this says that he has gone crazy while his family and relatives feel that his move was unjustified."
Now we had three questions to answer :-
1. What would u have done if u were in place of Naresh.
2.What shud management do to retain naresh.
3. Was the reaction of his Boss and family justified.

These are not the exact words of the case study but the theme was more or less same.
Well 13 people in the GD ...........and that included 4 from IIIT ( one of my seniors was also threre ). We had planned that we would take the full control of GD ( 4 from same college means majority, isn't it). But alas. The first mistake that we made was neither of us started the GD ( damn it) . The person who started it straight away moved to discussing his point instead of laying the order of the GD. So in short there was no moderator kinda thing in the whole GD and overall it was a fish market. I made 2 or 3 entries in the GD to briefly put my point but nothing more than that.In the end the pannel asked one or 2 persons to speak who didn't get a chance to speak. All in all not at all satisfying considering the fact that my rank was 275 , so shud have performed 100 times better to improve any chance what so ever to get in Bombay.

Anways coming to the PI part .( now thats really intersting ............ so enjoy fully as u read )
statement in angle brackets represent my own comments . Another important point is that all 4 of us from IIIT-H had our interview one after another and i was the third person among the 4. So i enter the room and there are 3 persons ( 1 lady and 2 guys ) sitting there. I greet them.

1st guy: Tell me briefly abt urself !

I: blah blah <of course i had learned it 100 times ........ now as soon as i say i from IIIT-H this guy interrupts me >

1st guy: So u from IIIT Hyderabad again. What, are all 150 of ur guys planning to storm into MBA colleges < remember he has already interviewed 2 of my friends just before me so this was a obvious comment>

I: <i just smile back and continue with my intro........... as soon as i finish this 2nd guy now starts to speak>

2nd guy(with the beard) : < i had mentioned in my intro that i have studied in DPS ranchi for 10 years ( class 3- 12) so this question was realted to that thing > were u there in 1992 in dps < i nod> in 1996 <i nod> in 1997 < i nod> in 2000 < i again nod...... i was feelin somewhat happy in nodding everytime but soon it would turn out to be a disaster ............. > and so do u recognize me ??? < what the f%^& ............ what was he trying to imply............... >

I: no sir , i don't recognize u !!!

2nd guy: what !!! u don't recognize me ....... do u know that i am from SAIL ( it is ranchi also ) and have been chief guest at almost every annual day event in DPS Ranchi < damn it ......... whoever he is why the hell he had to be in my pannel and obviously i didn't remember him ........ how cud i , i never went to any of those annual day ........ >

I: I am really sorry sir but it has been a long time since my school days. It might be skipping my memory <>

2nd guy: < gives me a glance which i didn't like at all > Dps ranchi is a very good school ....... how come u landed in IIIT and not in IIT < he didin't say tripple I T but
instead laid stress on every I >

I: sir i got a rank in IIT but it was very low ( 2952) ...... so had to take admission in IIIT-H < i also said by laying stress on every I ............ tit for tat mg:>

2nd guy: So how many guys cleared the IIT and how many IIIT-H examination from ur school

I: sir none other than me cleared IIIT-H < how cud they when no body else had taken the examination > and around 20 guys in IIT < yeah >

2nd guy : < nods his head>

1st guy : suraj your cg is 8.68 ..... so whats ur standing in the class?

I: my position would be around 30 among 150 students.

1st guy: ok suraj can u write the Taylor series

I: < #$^*(&^*^&$%$ ....... what the hell is that ...... aha sometime during 1st sem this talyor thing had come but who remembers it now> sorry sir!, i don't remember the talyor series < loud and clear was this answer>

1st guy: Ok write down any series that u know

I: < $%@#$% can't he leave this question> promptly wrote down the logrtihimic and exponential seris < knew nothing except these so don't laugh>

2nd guy: can u point out some practical applications of these series ?

I: < kya yaar kahe ko bor kar raha hai ....... itna kuch to hai poochne ke liya aur ye log series ke peeche pad gay hain ....... i start looking up and down and then towards them with blank eyes ......... kya boloon kuch samajh me nahi aa raha tha ........... anyways the guys himself starts answerig the question and somehow comes to rotation of sun and radiation effect thing>

2nd guy: can u write the equation of radiation and what all factor it depends on ?

I : < ding dong ! ding dong !........ naah dimaag ke kisi kone me batti nahi jalee ....... tried blurting out some stuff which neither he nor me cud understand ...finally ..> sorry sir, i have lost touch with physics < ....... marta kya na karta>

2nd guy: i didn't expect this from a student of DPS ranchi ....... its such a good school and u are not able to answer the question form physics < ..... yaar dps ko kyon pakad ke rakha hai .......... jindagi ki sabsi badee galtee hui thi jo dps join kiya ...........agle saat janam me dps nahi join karoonga ......... chup baitha raha>

1st guyk suraj , u said u are from jharkhand...... so tell me what are ur views on creation of new states

I: < thank god !, finally some material to talk abt ....... jharkhand and ranchi ke baare me to puri history use suna doonga .................. gave a decent answer to this question ............ was grilled more on this aspect .......like what is the current scenario and et al....... somehow included politics and discussion went in that direction ......... this was the only time when i could speak some stuff>

< they asked some more question which i don't remember now ........ would add them laterz>

interview lasted for abt 20 minutes ..
I anyway knew that with a poor rank chances are little so basically went to enjoy Mumbai and yes found it really cool.

IIT bombay is really good ........ with such a large campus ( yeah after living in IIIT for 3 years the IIT campus sure looked overwhelming) its really a cool place to live .........the hostel ( h-12 and h-13) where SOM people stay has been recently constructed and man they really have some large rooms and beautiful mess and canteen.

All in all enjoyed bombay ............ that day strolled for abt 12 (in the night) on the streets of mumbai before returning to hostel .

Re: IIT's - GD/PI experiences - 01-03-2004, 06:55 PM

Nice post there suraj. btw, met him after his GD.

here is my experience.

Skool - SJMSOM, IIT Bombay
JMET Rank - 159
Backgroud - B Tech CSE from Andhra University
Work ex - 7 months with a s/w company in vizag

It all started with some presentation which they have given in a oven. <huh, they call it seminar hall, but there is no ventilation and evryones sweating there>
okay, cutting the crap, the actual process started with case study.

The panel has 3 members and as soon as we enter the room, we are asked to sit in semi circular fashion. there were 13 members in all.
the case is something like this,

Quote:
Bangalore has around 200 MBA colleges with each skool offering MBA for abt 90 students. There is huge demand for the programme in b'lore and placements are good. but it is becoming increasingly difficult to get good MBAs to teach the aspirants. moreover, sometimes, the students come from as far as gujarat and these ppl cant understand english. So, the colleges need to find good linguists.
there is something called NET ( national eligibility or some suchthing test ) and teachers has to clear it to get their Ph.d.
at this juncture, retired bankers, military men and other oldies are finding teaching as a lucrative postion. they are laughing all the way to banks.......
then we were asked to solve the case by answering,

1. what is the recruitment strategy that you would fallow?
2. What are the various channels of recruitment you would use?
3. what are the roadbloacks that you may find in executing the recruitment process?

pretty direct and easy case. But one they said start, the group became a fish market. There were 5-6 ppl talking at a time and the faculty didnt intervene. I have tried to chip in my views 5-6 times and was successful 2-3 times. overall, i dint like the way in which the GD progressed. With 13 ppl in there, i dont see a point in not having an organised GD.
Even after the faculty asked someone to speak, ppl started quarrel.

Then, since i am the 11th one in my grp, i had to wait for more than 4-5 hrs, so, i have requested the student rep to reschedule my interview, so that, i can catch my train well in time.

so, my position became 3.

well, then, these are some questions asked in my interview <or informal chat>

1. Can you tell us abt yourself quickly?
2. Oh, you are a state ranker, what is this exam?
3. ECET? , what is this?
4. ok, do you have any quota in regular stream?
5. so, you lost one year in the entire process?
6. what is the specialisation in diploma?
7. you said that you have presented papers?, wot are they?
8. oh, but that is co-curricular activity? and you said, Extra-curricular?
9. hmm, wot are your hobbies purna?
10. what groups?
11. CAT groups, but then it is related to academics again?
12. where do you work? 12 hrs is too much?
13. VSEZ? where is it located?
14. okay, so it is in the outskirts of vizag, tell me purna, why were you so silent in GD?
<after defending myself....>
15. Wot are your favorite subjects in CSE?
<itold programming, OOAD and Software Engineering>
16. not that, any thing in core CSE?
<god only know what that means?, but i said DLC and something in OS>
17. ok, how many times do i need to toss a coin to get a head?
18. ok, it is a memoryless process, rite? then what is probability?
19. can you give an expression for probability?
20. have you ever heard of Permutations and combinations?
21. What is this n!?
22. exressions for P & C?
23. Wot is the use of all this? or you learned them just because they were in subject?
<itold them that, we can use prob concepts to mathematecally find out the number of machines required to give 99% uptime, and also in queueing and networking.>
24. Wot is reliability?
25. wot is the formula for it?
26. where do you hail from?
27. What is machilipatnams major product? is it rice, or anything else or is it machili?

That is all,
but overall, the panel is wearing a wry face and disinterested look on them, and i felt that, they want to just get rid of me. may be i am wrong here, but i felt that, if they are not willing to spend atleast 25 mins with their prospective students then how can we( ) spend 2 years with them ???? :P :P , moreover, they have not even read my SOP before interview, no questions on my workex, my engg degree, and things like why mba and why iit....

overall, my ratings,

GD - 2.5 out of 10
Interview - 6 out of 10

That is all, pour your views too.

Goodday ,
Chandoo

Re: IIT's - GD/PI experiences - 01-03-2004, 09:14 PM

hi guyz...

Here are the snapshots of my rendezvous with the IIT B gd/pi ...
reached a day b4 my gd/pi and visited SOM that day...
I think no insti can match IIT B in infra and kind of faculty they have...their industry interface is too gud...and if u really want toadd value to urself in those 2 yrs...u ll have unlimited resources at ur disposal...lacks in 1 thing though...very low density of fairer sex...

mine gd/pi was on 28th.. Chandoo I guess urs was also on the same day...
coz i got the same case study for my GD....
I never expected myself to perform so well in the GD but it went pretty gud in the end...
spoke 4-5 times and also was able to reduce the chaos couple o times..(kinda tried to moderate also..)

neway..not much to add here...but in one instance I heard that they really asked ppl to stop the GD as it was going nowhere nd thr was a lot of chaos..

Now bout the PI part....

There were 3 panelists (the same who took our GD)....
And I was already scared to death when ppl told me tht they r asking a lot of higher maths and stats...Now there was one guy in the panel who looked to me as a research scientist...(white bearded bespectacled guy) but to my relief he left the room as soon i took my seat...

some of the qs i was asked....
1.Tell me about urself...
2. Interrupted me to ask me abt some details abt my workex...
3.Ur Fav subjects in Mech?
4.Draw a kinematic diag to explain how power is transmitted from the engine to the rear wheels? (was able to explain in theory but goofed up in a lot of places..the prof was correcting me and helping me a lot...)...asked me to draw the gearbox diag...etc..
5.y is engine mounted a little above the rear axle? gave 1 reason out of common sense..nd he gave me another reason fr that...(u hv to admit at one stage or the other that...sirjee my knowledge ends here... )
6.now the lady asked me about..y mba....y at this time (i hv 2+ yrs of workex..)
7.and the guy jumped in b/w and asked y IIT B and not IIT D...
i was giving the logic behind my choice and he said...cmon y dont u say that IIT B has gud placements..nd thats the simple reason y u wanna join...
I was able to give him a dhansoo nd convincing reply here ...he seemed to b satisfied...
8.then i was asked abt my hobbies... (mine is reading nd travelling)
asked abt the places where I had travelled..but i wasnt grilled on this part...
9.Then i was asked that they hv heard horror stories abt my place of work...coz of some bonds etc...(no prizes fr guessing where i work
I tried not to start bashing my company along with them...nd she commented that u seem to b very loyal 2 ur company...
10.Then i was asked whether i have played any sports...i said I was not much into sports...but i did play TT nd enjoy watching cricket...no grilling on this part either...
Then they said all the best...nd it was over in about 20-25 mins...

I really hv mixed reactions abt my iview...dont know what to expect...
now i hv IIT D on 4th....wish me luck....

cya till then...

Re: IIT's - GD/PI experiences - 02-03-2004, 09:53 AM

Hi all,

Had my gd/pi session at IITB on the 29th(A.N), a day after my tryst with XLRI

Background:

JMET Rank - 270
IV Yr.(ECE) Student at Pondicherry Engineering College

Was asked to be dere at 12.30 for the presentation, entered the inferno 5 mins late and not much happening there..

The Case Study began sometime arnd 2.15....the situation being..

Therz this guy Mahesh..real hardworker.works 24/7...no holidays..travels 2 times a week (long distances i presume), oders in the company acknowledges the facts that hez the best or something like that..The post of GM is vacant, the chairman assures Mahesh that he is the frontrunner for the post.

But after a medical examination, the doctor advises the chairman that, if Mahesh worls atthis rate he will soon end up with heart troubles in another 6 months and he needed some 4 weeks rest. The Chairman decided upon conducting Stress management workshops for the employees..

That was the situation..
Qs:
1. What shud the Chairman do, should he directly inform Mahesh of this....
2.Abt Mahesh's Reaction and effects..
3.What is burnout?Symptoms?Effects?

Oders who were in that session are most welcome to correct my post, as i pretty well know that it's a lil skewed

There were 14 in my panel..1 extra..Was waitin to start the session, but was beat by some oder guy,,hmm fastest finger first talked abt 4 times, didnt turn into a "whatever" market as most of em had become.

Then went in for PI, started out with my SOP, had mentioned some Arnie's quote..

1. Was asked why Arnie is unpopular in California (of late)?

2. Usual q's why MBA, entrepreneurship...

3.Bill Gates dropout..Narayanamurthy...same old story..Why do u need an MBA?

4.Comparison of Software jobs and Management...(n.b -> im a fresher)

5.Are you wasting 4 years of tech by joinin management...?

6.What r analytical skills and thus came our villain ..STATISTICS ..
was asked abt distributions...normal, poisson,,etc..gulp..

7. Was given a problem, a 7 sided and an 8 sided polygon having the same perimeter, which has larger area?? Ah tink ah've messed it up!!

8. Was asked abt Hobbies, to which i responded Quizzin, reading fiction....etc...

9.Wht level have you won prizes,,,Univ level was my answer..

10.Specifically asked abt Sports..to which i replied I play Cricket n Soccer

Nothing much...
Was uneventful unlike XL.
My rating
GD 6/10
PI 6/10

btw don't ask me how i ended up with this rating...INSTINCT
