Hmm... prep 4 maths n accounts b4 joining? I believe, for maths at least u jus need to revise ur CAT maths like derivatives, statistics in particular... As it is, u will have some prep maths sessions during orientation. For accounts, go to whatever source u have, n pick up ne book which says it's the "basics" or "fundamentals". Can't suggest u ne names, coz never needed them (I've a finance background), so never bothered to refer to ne books there. But b4 picking up a book, jus read a few lines of the first chapter... see how u feel of the language n style... if it's interestingly written and comprehensible, take it up. Doesn't matter if it's an Indian or foreign author...

Most of us here have an HP, Lenovo, Acer or Dell. The Dell ppl are really happy with their lot... I, though, have a Cubit Stylus (never heard of it, rite? No probs, even I hadn't!). But I believe a Dell proves best in customer satisfaction... in addition to the feeling of owning a customized product, the features too are cool and useful (I've personally liked them a lot).

Quark (may I know ur real name, plz?), laptops are definitely not compusory... we have a 24*7 compu lab, so at least in the Insti there would be no major problem without a laptop/desktop. But it's only more convenient to have one... u don't have to keep going to the lab for ur small works, etc. Esp. during fieldwork, laptops prove really useful. Still, if u have ur doubts abt them, come to the Insti n get a feel abt the way things work. If u eventually find it necessary, get a laptop/desktop. In fact, most of us got one only after coming here, n gauging things for ourselves! Maverick (may I know ur name, too???), we do have LAN in the hostel rooms, so no worry on that end.

Schedules in IIFM are as hectic as you want them to be! The more u involve urself with IIFM activities, the lesser 'lazy' times you would have 4 urself. We have ppl who don't bother with 'superfluous' activities, n get str8 8-10 hrs sleep daily (O... hw we envy them!). N we have others, who don't bother with 'superfluous' activities, but still hardly sleep coz they utilize the time 'enjoyin'! Newhich way, it's up to you to distribute ur time, n u can do nething with it... N there's a hell lotta things u can do, believe me... and that includes learning - not merely studying - learning.

Yes, get a loan as per ur convenience. My mom's with a bank... so comparatively less hassles 4 me. U too do some mkt research n choose the best option. If it's there in Bhopal, so be it. Abt the stipend, do not hope much. If it's not there in the brochure, u will almost definitely not get it. We ourselves had a hard time gettin it - got it thru sheer will n hard work, by drawing attention to some loopholes. But they are determined not to give it from ur batch. Still, see if there are some loopholes... n once u get here, u can always work to enforce ur 'right'!

I'm interning with TERI (The Energy & Resources Institute) on a project relating GHG mitigation & buildings. Abt where I see the placements headed this year? See, things have been quite different this year with our internships. We, as a new batch (for the new scheme of IIFM), have realized quite a few things - some good, others not so good. Changes have occurred in the way internships have turned out - again, some good, others not so good. We intend to carry our experiences forward n use them to ensure smoother sailing for forthcoming batches (n also our own placements!). One thing's for certain, placements this year can turn up a few surprises, for sure. M I being vague? Maybe... but revealing too many 'good's and 'bad's through this medium is not necessary.

(Don't worry, newayz... u will get ur job!)

Re: IIFM (Indian Institute of Forest Management ) Bhopal : Queries Help desk - 01-05-2008, 09:22 PM

Hi Sid,

I'm Supratik, quark in pg for lack of a better pseudonym...
thanks for ur detailed reply, have a q re attire, can we attend classes in casual [jeans and tee] or is it formals all the way?
also what are the opportunities for people interested in sports and debates and other literary pursuits?
finally, ur thoughts re internships abv are a little vague, but thats probably coz we havent been specific with our questions. so if one were to ask for a student who may be interested in fashioning a career in one of the following areas viz 1. development sector[careers in donor agencies, intl bodies and academia] 2.corporate [marketing, finance, strategy] 3.environment [NGO conservation bodies] 4. forestry[various foundations] how has the SI scenario panned out for 2008? as u say that things have been quite different are we to assume that options have blossomed in some areas while not so bright in others? also with the division of the prog in three distinct areas viz devp, env and forestry mgmt, will the placement scenario be more focussed in the insti's core mandate areas than yesteryears, when placements have been quite diversified?

although it may be a littl premature to delve into SI and placemnts related discussions for the 2010 batch, I'm sure a little advance info will help us to do our homework better.

@sid
thanks mate for sharing such invaluable stuff. but certainly if u can highlight those "good" and "not so good" stuff it will be much better so that we can come better mentally prepared at least and work to shape our paths.
merely getting a job wasnt the criteria for choosing this insti for me and chuckin the rest. wanted to work in the sectors which the coll deals in.

Re: IIFM (Indian Institute of Forest Management ) Bhopal : Queries Help desk - 02-05-2008, 10:37 AM

Well, that's a funny question, Supratik, abt the attire! U don't expect ppl expected to be in touch with the grassroots ruminating in formals, do u??? Sometimes, some of us get up so late that we even land up in pyjamas! U get the point, rite? Neways, don't try out these antics in the initial days at least! Of course u can always go in ur tees and jeans rite from day one, but some professors really care about the clothes we wear for presentations! So hold back when that time comes!

We have fairly good in-house sports facilities (TT, football & badminton historically, n the newly inaugurated tennis court... n ample space for cricket), and as far as competitions go, u could always keep ur eyes open for ne national/regional sports competitions, n get the Insti's nod to represent it. Among various other clubs, we have Sports Club & Literary Club, which keep organizing intra-IIFM competitions. I tell u, so many things will keep happening, that if u participate in all, get ready to listen to the professors' naggings! IIFM really encourages students going out to participate in inter-college competitions... newhere in India. Last year many of us represented IIFM in various Management Fests, n won in some too! Opportunities are ever open... no one will stop you... but no one will spoon-feed u either! Discover, inform, give time for formal processes to finish, n live ur dreams!

I m really loathe to speak nething much regarding placements or internship here. I mean, many good things have happened this year with our internships - more than 2/3rd of the batch has been placed thru interviews (as against the usual trend of merit-based allocation). More students have found internships in areas of their interest, consequently. Newer organizations have taken us... n older ones have reaffirmed their faith in us. Much more mainstream projects have also come up - on SCM, for e.g. Bank of Baroda even offered us internships for their mainstream areas (finance, HR, operations, etc., not the microfinance part), though we didn't follow it up (no one was excited enough!). What we were not happy with was that processes became a little too late, coz many organizations refused jus coz their vacancies were already filled. That's what we want to rectify this year... space out events, so that there's less clutter n more distribution. That's all, on the internship's part.

Some part of ur query's still unanswered, rite? Will update later... have already written a lo........ng one.

Ciao!
