Thanks you asked this question. I hope being half way in this course and have done my Summers in Operations, I can give an idea about what is operations is all about.
As people think, operations is not restricted to one particular domain or function. Its is there in every function and activity that is happening in an organization. Let me take an example of IT Operations.
Right from job creation till a project team is assigned , there comes the work for Operations manager. He will be responsible for getting the talents , measuring their performance, estimating the time periods, assinging teams to new projects, allocating resources(computers, workspace etc.,) to the new teams, co-ordinating with Delivery Head for client interaction and many more.
In a manufacturing, the typical work invovles right from procurement to order fulfillment. In logistics, finding out the best possible routes for transportation, assigning the right materials, etc.,
As my project was in IT operations, I have given in detailed. I hope my other friends will give mush more detailed view of operation in Banking & HR operations.
It is generally said, its not wise to be specalizied at Management level. But as far I see the future, everything is specialising. You tend to choose a particular domain when you enter into a particular stream of engineering.
Being generalist is not wrong, but same time, it doesn't give any focus. No offense, but thats the truth. People tend to be generalist to keep thier options open till the last moment they can survive. What I would say, is enter as a specialist in a domain, create your own niche market and when you grow higher & higher in the organization the specialisation atuomatically vanishes.
Its upto you to decide whether you want to be specialized in a course or to be more generalist.
And one more thing friend, its more than a year now and second batch is competing successfully for their summers and we are looking ahead of our final projects in best companies in India & abroad. We have established our presence by conducting National Operations summit, which was acclaimed by industry leaders across the world. I am not exxaggerating, but its true, by seeing the input what we got during that seminar, its truly global. I hope,
SIOM is NO more a NEW INSTITUTE.
