Re: SJMSOM, IIT Bombay Admissions 2007 -

Before someone asks this, I would rather take up the issue here itself.
One of the most common questions we face here is :
Which B School to join?
SJMSOM or IIM, FMS, SPJAIN, NITIE, MDI, XLRI, IIFT ?
I am afraid you wont find direct answers to such questions on this thread. These answers are very subjective and depends on your work profile, your career interests, your background etc. There are quite a few students here in SJMSOM who have left final calls from IIM K,I NITIE, MDI, SPJAIN, XLRI, IIFT etc. However, this says nothing about the rankings of these colleges. It only means, for their profile and interests, SJMSOM was the better option.
Hence, as of now, please refrain from asking queries related to b-school comparisons on this thread. These queries can be taken up individually (after the results come out) by discussing it directly with the seniors.
However, you are welcome to ask anything and everything about SJMSOM.
Good Luck !
Ramesh

Re: SJMSOM, IIT Bombay Admissions 2007 -

hi,
I have heard that the Quant section is tough in JMET. The level of maths required for CAT is 9 , 10 Std maths concepts but JMET seems to have a higher level. I have made no special preparation for JMET prepared only for CAT based. So with 2 weeks left what can I do to increase my scoring?
regards,
catinat

@catinat Dude, quant is JMET is quite crackable....in fact ppl like me made it to SOM just because of quant scores......just go back to ur +1 and +2 math in case u wanna serious edge in quant......otherwise, there are loads of cat level questions interspersed in the paper........
@catch-it Well, PIs mostly depend on our ability to give it a direction......and yes u do need to have the basic knowledge of ur engg stuff......not big deal yaar......only a question or two in the whole interview.....

You need to have atleast the very basics of your Engineering concepts right. This holds true not only for SJMSOM, but for any other B schools. So a quick revision of 3-4 days will give you the much needed info.
VA and DI are not too tough. So, no special preparations for that.
Yes, for quant some level of preparation is needed. The best thing to do is to get some previous years papers from your coaching institute. This will give you a good picture.
If you have anything specific about the quant section, you may go ahead and ask.

Well Said f_k. I cant help but agree. Perhaps 90% of the people who are giving JMET may tell you to stay away from quant. But my advise will be this:
1) There are enough CAT based questions as well. Moreover, if your strength is not in quant, you are not looking to score more in it. Hence, you can easily target the easier set of questions and still aim to get a good score.
2) Having said that, I wont advise you to completely ignore higher mathematics. If you do just the basic few concepts of the topics, you can have a good advantage over others. Even I am here in SJMSOM today, due to my good score in quant. Hence, just spend a few days on it.
Good Luck!
Ramesh

My take - Even if the cutoffs are there, they wont be too high (specially in quant) unless they make the paper easier. Hence, the strategy shouldnt be much different from what we guys had followed. If you are not confident about quant, aim to just touch the cutoff. Try to do the CAT like questions. At the same time, try to maximize your score in the other sections.
I think a score of 75+ should fetch you a call. Considering average accuracy, a 100 attempts seem to be good.
As for me, I had had 102 attempts. I had scored in the mid 80's and had got a % of 99.92 (Rank 14) with 99.96 in quant. This is just to show you guys that JMET quant is not uncrackable. ITs just that peple never take it seriously.
Hence, if you think you are not so good in quant, stick to the strategy of maximizing your scores in the other sections. However, if you feel that quant is your strength, Go for it Mate !
Cheers
Ramesh
