Re: 1 year PGDGM program at XLRI - GMP - 11-05-2008, 02:02 PM

Hi to all.
I have been a regular visitor but have hardly posted any messages/ opinions. But I woud seek some inputs on the placement. Can somebody provide me with the placement details like what are the compnies coming, what profiles they seek, what offers they are giving? I come from hardcore Govt. Orgnisation (indian railays) involved in Operations and Maintenance. My specific interest is in Consulting. So how does a prospective consulting firm size me up. Which Consulting firms are coming for placement and what offers do they give both in terms of compensatiopn as well as role in organisation? Do companies like Accenture, McKinsey, PwC, IBM, Bain come for the placements?
Please give in your replies

Cheers

I am an admitted candidate from Mumbai and thought I should share my loan experience on this forum. SBI branch manager at Jamshedpur asked me to travel down to the branch along with my guarantor and put up camp for 3-4 days while the formalities were being completed. I found this utterly unbelievable as a bank with core banking should not have to do things locally. So I approached my local branch and the branch manager there mentioned that he could not give me the special loan scheme but if I wanted I could execute the documents in front of him and he would forward it to the Jamshedpur branch. This seemed more logical but there is a catch. This process could take well over 15-20 days which would go past the 26 april deadline.
Now for the good news. I found canara bank to be surprisingly customer focussed. The guys at Ranchi said they would forward my details to the mumbai circle and that I would be able to get a loan from my local branch. When I visited the nearest branch the scene was a bit different and the chief manager there was initially reluctant and not aware of the special scheme. A few hours of investigation later it turned out that canara bank has a special scheme circular floated across all its regions. So no matter where you are in India you should be able to get the special rate quoted for XLRI. (The circular number is 243/07 and 48/08.) So most probably I will be going with Canara bank only. The negative here is that loan eligibiliy is 50k less than SBI if you do not wish to keep any collateral. I am not rejoicing yet though...because with PSU banks it aint over til the fat lady sings !!

BTW on a different note, any other candidates from Mumbai? It would be nice to meet up and get to know each other before we travel to Jamshedpur.

Cheers
Rishi.
Hi Rishi,
I got cleared thru watlist and now, i also intend to get loan from my local Canara Bank. I just wanted to know that how will we manage the next three installments. Do we have to come back to our respective places and get the cheques or local canara brach will send this to XLRI ??

Hi

You dont need to be physically present for the disbursement of the next installments. However you need a representative who can collect the draft from the branch and courier it across to you. When the installment is due you can send an email to the branch to arrange for the disbursement. All drafts will be made in favour of XLRI by the bank..

Cheers
Rishi.

XLRI to double GMP intake for 2008-09

Jamshedpur, May 12 Premier B-school XLRI is set to double its intake of candidates for the one-year general management programme (GMP) course, from around 53 last year to over 100, for the 2008-09 academic session.
"XLRI is also planning to expand international exposure for the students through tieups with major universities across the globe," said Father Abraham, director XLRI, speaking at the graduation ceremony for the 2007-08 batch.
According to associate dean (GMP & defence programmes) Pranabesh Ray, the B-school had selected only 61 out of the 1,552 valid applications it had received for its 2007-08 GMP batch.
XLRI has been increasingly attracting managerial talent for its GMP course from across the country. The ratio of the number of applicants spurted 152% for the 2007-08 session.
The B-school has enriched its GMP course recently by reducing number of core courses to 14 by introducing long-duration courses for an integrated coverage of the subject. In addition, the number of optional courses has been increased from 12 to 16.
Besides focusing on basics as well as advanced concepts of management, the course also provides international exposure in the form of internship and projects.
XLRI's 53-student batch of 2007-08 session received 101 job offers from 54 Companies, as against 23 last year, in completion of their course. The average salary of the batch for global and domestic assignments increased by 20 to 30% at $1,30,000 and Rs 17.8 lakh, respectively.</I></B>

think before you leap. come for study but do not resign from the company.the market situation is bad . even ISB was not able to place 28 students ( as heard) . find the truth about the course and the placement details. do not go by news paper survey. all those are done for branding.every institute does that.institute is good for two years study and placement. one year placement depends mostly on the market condition and the experience a person had. About consulting , just forget that.
selection of placecom members matter a lot. select placecom members from your sector also. otherwise in the end you will be the loser. forget about sector change. only 15% are able to do that. most of them go to different industry in the same function.
But you should certainly study from xlri as this is one of the prestigious institute for mba in india. that will help you in your future endeavour.

Sector change may not be easy to achieve but many people got different roles in the same industry. If you are interested only in management/strategy consulting then the picture is not encouraging , but people got into IT consulting etc.

thanks suman for the reply. but does really the electives in IT helps a person to get consulting job or it was the past experience which matters a lot.
what about for other sectors for example for navy.

can you throw light on real placement details. I am hearing different story about the placement from the current passed out GMP Students. Is it true that the institute does not help in this regard. Can we talk to the coordinator. can you reveal the truth. it will be of great help to us.

The electives might not help, unless you are trying change in sector for example from operations to finance. There was only two IT electives for us E-Business and IT Strategy.
And we had IT Strategy in 4th term after the placements were over. IT Area is rather weak in XL. So don't expect much. Anyway its the past experience which will matter. So not much harm caused there.

The figures reported are the CTC. That includes perks, bonuses, stock options. For example if for an offer 30% of the CTC is given in ESOP with a holding period of say xx years and that is a one time payout that will be reflected in the CTC and hence the reported calculations. This is the usual way of reporting B-School placements.

Institute does not help in placements save from providing infra and logistics support.
For your information there were three people who were not placed at the end of the programme.Institute has made it clear in the brochure that it has no responsibility for placing students. Please refer to the brochure.

You may talk to the co-ordinator by all means.I should encourage you to have that experience.

Regards
Suman
