it is very conflicting with the information availaible on common forum
Why institute participation is minimal when institute can easily captilize on the contact from BM and PMIR placements.
Three ppl are still struggling to get offer inspite from being XLRI, It does not send a good message to junta.
XLRI has lots of regards in student comunity as well as in industry. I think senior can throw more light with unbiased conscience

Also the palcement stats on XL website does look to bit exaggerated....as they stated that 63% people were able to change their careers.

Why XLRI having in declaring the number of candidates selected. The prospective students have the right to know about the strength.

Thanks
Amit
Changing from the manufacturing sector to IT is also a change in career/profile... I personally know a person who moved to IT business development after GMP and had worked in the manufacturing sector for about 4-5 years before joining the program.. so the 63% figure might not be an exaggeration.

Re: 1 year PGDGM program at XLRI - GMP - 27-03-2008, 12:35 PM

Dear All.

There has been some transmission loss ( not Rohit's fault) in reproducing our conversation:

1. Quote : "who have still not been placed due to varying reasons (not so good profile, niche interests, etc.)"

My comment: You will be better off reading this after removing the words " not so good profile"

2. There are other mistakes in the data quoted but are not making material difference to the aggregate picture, so I will not pick those at this point in time.

3. On question 6 : XLRI takes fees in installements , bank will release the amount as per that installment schedule(at least SBI XLRI does so)

On general note:

Some of you are mixing up last year placements data ( regarding sector change and all) with our batch's figures and getting confused. We have not yet published our placmemnt report.

If some of you have very specific question on placements feel free to ask...

Enjoy

Shailendra

I had a chat with Shailendra yesterday evening... He was a member of the placement committee and shared quite a bit about placements too. I will try to answer the question list as per my discussion with Shailendra

1. Placement stats for this year.

Placement process is driven mainly by the students and there is minimum participation from the college. Shailendra was of the opinion that stats like average salary, companies visiting, etc. do not matter as the target company and salary have been a function of the person's pre-GMP profile. The students placement committee contacts the companies directly and tries to get them for the placement week. The list of companies to be contacted is prepared after consultation with the class.

Some stats that I could get from him,
Total companies visiting campus = 40
International offers = 2 (from Arcelor Mittal)
Average salary = INR 16-17 Lakhs

Shalendra says that it is very difficult to change the profile from a One year MBA = GMP... There is a chance that the student himself contacts an employer or gets an interview through his network... but this depends completely on the student

Though all IT biggies in India came for the placements and have recuited in bulk, the salaries in IT sector were a bit lower than usual due to multiple reasons (slow down, etc.). For a person of around 6/7 years of experience.. the salary offered was ~14/15L. But then again, this varied on the type of pre GMP experience and the way he represented himself during the interview. The range of salary was from 8L to 24L. In case of the 24L person, his pre-GMP salary was 20L and he had a an appropriately matching profile. Roles are mostly for business development in Indian market.

The telecom companies that visited this time were BSNL, Tata Telecommunications and Airtel.

There are 3 students who have still not been placed due to varying reasons (not so good profile, niche interests, etc.)

Consulting biggies like Accenture, McKenzie, Booz Allen, etc. have not visited the campus. There were other companies like "IBM Strategy and Change" (the pure consulting arm of IBM) did come for recruitment. There were also some IT companies like Cognizant, Infy, etc. who have recruited for consulting positions in their organization.

There were no big I Banking and financial institutions that came for bulk placements.

A placement report would be released later in the next month which should contain more details.

2. Batch strength for this year.
No idea... adcom may confirm later

3. Call to conversion ratio.
No idea... adcom may confirm later

4. Initial fees that we have to deposit to secure a place in GMP class and the deadline for the same. And in anycase was it refundable (partly)?
Deadline for deposit was April end last year

5. Student Loan and issues. Maximum amt SBI ( xlri branch ) can offer without collateral.
Last year the bank had offered the complete loan amount at an attractive rate of interest (read 1% lower than existing market rate) without any collateral. The SBI bank manager is quite helpful in resolving the queries for XLRI ppl.

6. Does the bank give you the loan for entire amount in one go or in instalments
Did not ask. Need to confirm from the bank

7. Laptops Configuration ? Any preloaded softwares to be loaded other than MS Office /
Will be informed along with admissions offer

8. Is admission deferral possible due to a valid reason ?
No idea.. need to confirm from adcom

9. Details about family accommodation availability ? Are fooding expenses are also covered?
Yes, family accommodation is available and last year there were no extra charges for family accommodation.
Food expenses were included in the fees last year but this may not be included this year as per Shailendra.

10. Any suggestions for waitlisted students?
Did not ask

11. Do the students have to pay for the foreign module ( air tickets + food + local transport ) seperately ?
The international exposure module is something like an international exchange program.
Air tickets are included in the fees.
Food and local transport need to be borne by the student himself.

12. Is there any type of holidays in between where u can visit your family if so how much and when so that we can plan in advance.
Did not ask

13. Uniform/dress code for gmp students. What type of clothings should one bring. Is casuals allowed in classes ?
Did not ask

14. Approximate personal expenses international program.
Did not ask
I did ask about the expenditure during the program and although this depends on the lifestyle of the student, there have been a few students who have a monthly expenditure of INR 500

I hope the above information is useful for everyone.

@Vibhor
I thought of writing this mail here as this may also help prospective applicants of the GMP program and others who may not be members of the google group. I will also forward this mail on the group.

@Shailendra and Seniors
Thanks a ton for your time and sharing all this information. I hope I have put all the correct information in this post. Please feel free to add/edit/delete more info where ever needed.

Cheers
Rohit

Sunil, I will not be joining the course. Folks, don't lose hope coz if the Adcom increases some seats, and a few folks like me pull out, there are very good chances of you making it. So, stop worrying, and think positive. All the best!

All Waitlisted folks,

A ray of hope.... I just called up XLRI and the person told me that they have selected the students based on current intake i.e - 60 and the number of seats are still not decided... If the seats increase, then they will start considering the waitlisted candidates..

This is what I could interprete from the convo . Would be nice if the seniors can confirm my understanding .... It will be a big ray of hope , if this is the case....

Regards
Sunil

Re: 1 year PGDGM program at XLRI - GMP - 27-03-2008, 06:57 PM

Last year the average experience was 5 years with a lot of people having about 3 years experience. It is relatively easy for people with less experience to change sectors. (The 63% figure quoted) .For our batch the average experience was 7.5 years. Please understand that after significant experience it becomes almost impossible to change sectors. No one is going to give you a leadership position just because of an MBA if you dont have significant experience in that sector. Kindly dont harbour any false expectations before you come here. It will lead to lot of heartburn later.

There is no harm in trying but I told you the reality.

This seems contradictory in the sense what had changed from last year to this year so that many could not switch profiles.

Re: 1 year PGDGM program at XLRI - GMP - 27-03-2008, 07:05 PM

Typically placement is a student run process and the institute supports it.More so for an MBA where the average experience is 7.5 years. It is not a commodity market where you call some IT companies ,Finance and Manufacturing companies and they pick up people.People also have specific aspirations about roles what they want and it is best that the students manage it.
An offer will only be made if the candidate is good and there is right fitment with regards to the candidates past experience and skills. There are instances when a company did not pick up a single candidate. So just having a large no of companies participating does not help.
