hey hii again..

here's d copy of an article in TimesofIndia Pune edition(25th June, Sunday)

since m from pune..somethin to cheer abt..

Pune set to emerge design capital of India

2-day event to display well-designed products

By Abhay Vaidya/ TNN

Pune: After emerging as a major educational hub and an infotech hotspot, Pune is now preparing to don a brand new identity: the design capital of India.
In a major initiative, a number of design professionals here have joined hands with the industry to hold the first-ever Pune Design Festival in November.
The festival which aspires to grow on the lines of the annual London Design Festival five years from now, is being spear-headed by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci). It will be cohosted by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA) at their International Convention Centre.
The idea for such a festival grew from the fact that a number of India’s awardwinning design studios such as Design Directions, Elephant Design and Onio Design, besides those of firms such as Philips, Wipro Lighting Systems and LG are based in Pune.
“The aim of the festival is to project Pune as a key destination for design. It is to make the advantages of ‘good design’ visible to people, industries and policymakers,” IIT-National Institute of Design alumni Manoj Kothari, founder-director of Onio Design, told TOI.
Ficci’s western region council director Vaijayanti Pandit, who participated in a preparatory meet here on Thursday, said the idea of a design festival has generated considerable interest among industry leaders at Ficci.
Pandit said that while design development is a nascent, Rs 500-crore industry in India, it is a $4 billion (about Rs 18,000 crore) industry worldwide, offering tremendous opportunities for India.
While IIT (Powai) has agreed to be an organisational partner for this event, talks are on with the other IITs and well-known institutions to participate in the event.
The festival has been planned as a two-day event featuring an exhibition and a conference. While the exhibition will feature well-designed products, grassroots innovation and outstanding urban projects, the conference will seek to bring out the “nuances of innovating for the Indian market.”
The event will seek to focus on five areas of design, namely, product, industrial, retail, graphics and IT design. Case studies of campaigns that succeeded because of well-designed communications will also be discussed at the seminar.
Festival planners, who include well-known industry professionals such as Satish Gokhale and Sudhir Sharma are planning to involve booksellers and malls to spread the spirit of a ‘design festival’ across Pune.
MCCIA additional director-general Pankaj Joshi said Pune’s potential for growth in this sector needs to be given a proper showcasing.

PUNE DESIGN FESTIVAL 2006

•Planned by Ficci, MCCIA and Pune Design Forum in the first week of November
•Seeks to grow on the lines of annual London Design Festival
•Aimed at projecting Pune as the Design Capital of India
•Festival to involve booksellers, malls across the city
•Goal is to build and showcase Indian talent and creativity globally

hey MAC.. good work dude.. design will definately come into play in future.. jus that this course might take some time.. may be the students will have to struggle for 2-3 yrs, even by workin for pantaloons for 2-3 yrs in retail fld.. ppl can definately jump over to better companies when there r design oppurtunites.. n remember one thing frds..... this is the 1st batch.. n strength is ONLY 45.. so even if oppurtunities r less.. no. of students is also very less.. another thing.. remember this yrs placements 0f SITM (symbi telecom management) & ITCM (IIMM sister concern.. telecom management).. 80% of the students were placed in normal domains as any other normal MBA students rather then in telecom domain... this is only due to the huge demand for MBA students from good institutes.. n weli is definately a good institute.. this is jus my point of view n i wud definately go for this course if i get thru..
hope for the best frds..

cheers

hey rudraksh..wat u say is fine...also there are opportunities for business designers abroad.... ..not much here, but wil the indian degree work for us in getting a placement outside india.....i seriously doubt on that.......someone from welingkars told me that there will also be international placements for 5 of them,i mean they wil help us in the application process only, rest we r suppose to prove it to the compant....

i dono how much of truth is tat ......but if it is it will be good...coz more than INDIA d demand for business design managers is abroad....in automotive sectors nad mainly in manufacturing segments and all.........but b4 that we need to knw the subject we wil be thought......coz tat wil make a huge difference while deciding that we shud take the course or not ( that is only when we get shortlisted ).....

wat we can do at this stage is when we get to knw the subjects 2 b thought...we can compare it with those institutes who are already running such kinda program abroad...this wil give us and idea weather we are in the same league or not...

but when will we come 2 come 2 knw abt the subjects........

can anyone help?????????????????

I totally agree with you sabtech. People from finace/hr/systems should keep away...thats my opinion...the course is too futuristic for these streams..

I think this is a very very risky course....

1>> The course structure is not clearly specified.
2>> After joining, we will come to know about the subjects, which may not be to our liking or requirement..
3>> The pantloon guys have assured 30 placements, but there is no real guarantee, as to what their packages would be like.
4>> A major chunk of the program we will be in doing interships(r we paying 3.5 LAKHS AND 25% of the time will be spent in some company).
5>> There are several subjects which r very generalized.
6>> There is no doubt that WELINGKAR has a good name, but I think a course should be given more structure.
7>> The industry usually takes some time to accept new course(and this one follows a different line of thinking).
8>> This is the first batch so there is no history of placements.
9>> If you are the one who thinks that life u r supposed to take some risks, then u can take up the course.
10>> If I get MET,CHETNA,DALMIA i will take up that first definitely.

These r just my views and u can analyse the things exhaustively for ur self.
