In a gist,
the admission to tiss consists of a process that takes into account of 4 parameters

1. Objective test ( elimination test for 70 marks, conducted this yr on jan 21st and gen category candidates need to score minimum of 43 to go to next stage) GK, Quant,DI,Verbal. Easy/Tough depending on Background. Those who have prepared for cat or are from engg/math background will find quant,di and verbal easy. GK will be a crucial factor. Look into the thread for questions asked.

2. Group discussion (30 Marks) : Group strength of 10 ppl max. 2 topics provided and 25 minutes to choose the topic and discuss on it. Domination by individual / fish market leads to negative marking for the whole group.

3.Personal Interview (75 marks) : Panel usually consists of 3 profs. Interview can range from anything from 3 mins to 45 mins on any topic in the world.

4. Academic Performace( 25 marks): Undergraduate grades/marks/performance.

So totally you are judged on these 4 parameters for a total of 200 marks. This year there was no essay. It was there till last year.

Hey Ramakrishna, can you clarify my question regarding the work ex thing? ie. are they really strict on taking 40 ppl with 2+ yr ex, and do they consider the months of exp till the time of submitting the form or till the point the int. was taken (or till TISS starts its course)?

If u know, please tell us about it

hello every1..My gd-pi was on 16th April. sorry 4 postin a bit late. we were asked 2 chose bw3 gandhain thoughts and globalisation in our group. most of d ppl opted 4 the 1st one.gd was quoite ok.
interview was quite cool. only 2 of the panel members quizzed me and the third was silent throughout the interview. as i was made 2 wait for quite some time after lunch 4 the panel members to arrive they actually apologized 2 me. qs were quite simple like describe urself,y do u want 2 do hr, define hr, wht r the hotly debated issues going on in Tamil Nadu, my take on 69% reservations in TN, moral policing, do women hv enough freedom in the country and would i still take up TISS even if i wasnt offered hostel accomadation as they would nt b abl 2 offer hostel acco 2 every1 as the num of seats hv been doubled.
Overall it was a decent interview(lasted around 15mins.) bt one never knws wht these guys xpect.Keepin my fingers crossed.

Dheeraj,
no one can answer this question confidently . Some seniors said tiss can be very Bureaucratic and even one day less will be considered the other way and some also said it depends on type of work and the no of students who ve applied for the other stream too. so no takes on that. They will decide.

As chaaya & ashish have pointed out, there were panels that were cool, just asked GK stuff and dint show any reactions on their faces while some panels had the STRESS Element as chaosunlimited & I found out

So just go there and do your best. No idea what the panel expects out of you. So fingers crossed till then. What about other experiences? no posts of experience/stats for those who had on 17th n 18th?

Re: Tiss Hrm&lr (2007-2009) - 19-04-2007, 12:19 PM

My detailed experience at TISS: - GD/PI on 16th April - 9:30 am

Reached at around 2 pm on Sunday and spent that evening at TISS - met many new PG friends - Vachan, Rajiv and of course later Saki and Ram (whom I already knew)... the stay overnite was nice - doesnt feel as if u are in Mumbai when inside the campus at TISS - small in size but really nice to have a walk in da evenings etc - and extremely conducive atmosphere and surroundings for study - and well - the latest news is that TISS has become wi-fi - all da info was poured in from Babu who met us on Sun evening and answered a lot of questions from our side...

Woke up early in da morning as we were told to report at 8 am sharp - got ready and went to the main lounge where there was a smal crowd - not as much as expected - we had a small presentation on the know-how of TISS by a second-year'ite of the HRM/LR program... later we came up and were grouped into different batches (as put on da notice board) - and were led to da different classes for the GD/PI - Mine was in class XI - 8 of us (2 absent) - 4 boys 4 gals... so even ratio

GD: Globalisation is a mixed blessing for the youth of today (it was the same topic for all the batches in my main group) - the other group had got Gandhian values etc etc... ( though the topics are being changed evryday - so dont go by them )

Very decent GD - chipped in a lot of times... was surprised by da female junta as some spoke real well, and real fluently. By da way we ourselves decided that we wud use paper, and recollect our thoughts for sometime - the 2 supervisors didnt have a prob with it - though when we decided on the topic as globalisation and started writing, one of them said 'Isnt this a GD ?? ' - and well - one of the ladies started rite away. Two of the females seemed to be dominating the show - though all guys spoke well too - and well - chipped in a lott of good points - though the youth aspect was kinda fading away with all the industrial and economic aspect takin toll of da topic - all of us spoke without majorly cutting others - as we had been reminded that domination of the GD wud lead to getting -ve points.

After this - we were led into a room, and were told that there is still some time for the PI. Hence we moved off - grabbed a vada-paav for a quick bite and then came back - to our disbelief the PI's had already begun - apparently the people were being called RANDOMLY. Was surprised at this - but there was nothin we cud do. We just gave our names, and sat there hopin for a quick call. I was called in just before the lunch call - though they dedided later that I too shud be pushed in after lunch . So i went ahead, ate somethin and returned. The wait before the PI was long. The PI finally happened at around 3 to 3:15 pm. I was all jittery before as I had heard my panel had been stressing the people in da morning and blasting on GK... finally I was in...

PI: The panel - Oldish smiling lady - L (did almost all questioning)
Elderly man in between - E
Different lookin elderly person with long tied hair - D
Bakra moi - B

B (enters and wishes all - sits)
E: Whats these documents? (pointing to my change of name docs)
B: (Explains what were they)
E: But why did you change your name ?
B: blah blah
All 3 of them: Ok ok
L (smiling eternally ) - So u are working in XXX - how long?
B: blah blah
L: Oh - thats a lot of time - wat are u working in?
B: blah blah (cool workex questions )
L: Ohk so such a nice field - why do u want to come into HR?
B: Blah blah blah blah -( some kind of an answer which I had thought of... explained properly - wat do I get -- EXPRESSIONLESS faces - E is checkin my papers/docs/certificates)...
L: Ok - so Ashish tell me bout what you think of women in this present day corporate world? And what are the issues faced by them ?
B: blah blah - sexual harrasment, ego problems from men, etc etc
L: Ohkie - so wat are the things companies have been doin to prevent such things like sexual harrasment?
B: blah blah
(trying to maintain eye contact with all - but E is busy with file - doesnt look at me AT ALL - and D is well - blank - stone-faced - no expressions! )
L: Ohkie - so tell me about the reservations issue now -
wat do u think bout the reservations issue in the private sector?
B: Blah blah blah blah
L: Ohk cool - (looks at others for their turn)
D (all of a sudden): What are the different central trade unions in India?
B: (says somethin which goes kinda unheard)
D: wattt???
B: blah blah (explains)
E: Ohkay yes yes
D: (shaking head)
D: Can you name some trade union in the unorganized sector?
B: umm - dont think I know any - but i guess BMS can be one of them
D: (smilingly looks at L)
Moi understands that my answer is wrong :(
D: So which are the new states in India??
B: blah blah
(all quiet for sometime)
L: (asks E if he wants to ask any questions)
E: No nothin actually - so bout ur hostel accomodation at TISS -- blah blah ( they were askin this to all at their interviews)
B: blah blah
L: Ohkay thats it then - thanx Ashish
E: yes thanks
D: expressionless
B: (wishes and exits)

Approx 15 min - Dont know wat to say - questions were ok - but hardly any reaction from the panel - except for the lady at times... the people before me and those after me had a similar kinda interview - though not entirely on GK questions - theirs were even shorter - some 8 to 9 min...
Looks like they were lookin for more than just mere answers...

Travelled in da evening to Churchgate to meet a friend and stayed overnite with him - had kinda fun - and then travelled back to airport da next morning to catch flite back to Blore - Saki (chaosunlimited) and another girl accompanied me in it - so that was good fun too - all in all was happy dat the MBA season was over for me

General opinion: Diverse interviews being conducted - entirely on luck which panel u get, and also how ur interview goes. Heard later that my panel conducted stress interviews in the latter half of the day... was again surprised at that... The panel with the dean was stressing most of da guys - so guess people had to watch out there...

Dats as far as how it went - all da best to all others for the gd's/interviews...

Ashish

TheNitin 's Experience - posting on behalf of Nitin - 19-04-2007, 04:48 PM

TheNitin 's TISS Experience

************************************************** ***********************

Posting my exp late. Held up with work Thnks Chaos for posting on my behalf as I have forgotten my PG pwd

More than my experiences @TISS, I am posting this thread to thank a few students and the support staff @ TISS who truly make TISS feel like a institute for the people. They never behaved like seniors but friends. Great attitude!!!

Got a chance to interact with only a few of them as my stay there was short. Interacting with them will give you an idea what TISS is looking for in the candidates- (TISS MATERIAL).

Dr Samir Singh, (MHA),First person to interact with - very jovial and helpful. Kept our spirits going with few tips and tricks...
Mr Ashutosh( MSW), Shared the room with him- spoke with us for over an hour regarding various experiences @TISS. Gave a good picture about the insti with a few interesting instances.
Mr Hargovind( HRM-LR), Coordinator- A very approachable, soft spoken and down to earth person. was helpful and gave us a few insights.
Mr Babu: Thanks for this useful thread.. Dint get to interact .

My experience:
GD @ 9:30. 8/10 were present.
5 freshers (3 girls, 2 guys) 1 lady with 4yr exp( trainer for GD/PI @ IMS) , 1 doctor, mbbs(2 yr exp) from cochin( cool dude, less spoken) & myself ( 2 yrs exp in IT, Bangalore).

Topic 1: Are Gandhian principles relevant even today? OR
Topic 2: Globalisation is a mixed feeling for the youth in India.

Even without introducing ourselves or much discussion some Enthu janta chose topic 1.
Lady from IMS who was apparently tense before the gd started off with choosing the topic...(lot of facts & quotes)
All others pitched in with their thought and experiences...
Doctor din speak much but made a few relevant points..
There was no conclusion as we never kept a tab on time and were politely asked to shut up and get out @ 10.

P I:
Waited waited waited.. Finally at 3 PM , I was called in. Half energy drained, sleepy and with some terrifying experiences of others I enter.
Panel - 1 sweet lady and 1 friendly gentleman (forgot names)
Me: May I come in. ( forgot to wish them)
P: Pl sit down.
There was some confusion in the records what they had/ they were purposely doing it (not sure) coz they din realise I had done my BE,
P: What are u doing?
Me: Blah BlahBlah...
P:Oh!! so u r in the IT field... software work???
Me: yeah ...
P : ( The expected one) - Then WHY HR?
Me: Had a thought about answer but I forgot half the things and spoke for about 2 min... May be they felt a little bored and I did a mistake of cutting
short my answer.... ( could have made it more impressive.. lost out there)
P: Do u know there are lot more things in HR? Have you read any books on HR?
Is there gender bias in your company? Are there female colleagues in your company? Nandigram?
Recent controversy in IT sector in karnataka?
Me: wondering what controversy for a few seconds ( Friendly person prompted..."A person made a statement")
gottcha... It was NRN -National anthem.... spoke a little on that
One more a little serious looking gentleman enters and takes his seat..
He asks; Trade union in India? TU in Karnataka? are there any SEZ probs in Karnataka?
Me: Just remembered few of the trade unions
P: You have mentioned you will accept admission even if not given hostel?
Me: I'm sorry, I have mentioned it the other way.
oh.some confusion again and then
P: But we have more seats this time and there might not be hostel available...
Me: Commuting is difficult while pursuing the course.. It would be hectic.. I wish to experience hostel life
Serious person: But you'l find accommodation very close to TISS and around..
Me : Dint argue much.. said ok fine..no prob.... ( may be they wanted me to stay in the bus depot opposite or the infamous slaughter house in deonar ;0)
P: Thank you .. you can leave...
Me out @ 3 :15
Overall a soft interview...Nothing asked from my bio sketch or extra curricular... No stress
Cant perceive anything out of this..
As posted earlier by experts... TISS gurus would look for TISS materials.. Now how they go about it ??? Mystery unsolved...
(Either they know u fit in Tiss OR bechara itne door se aaya hai, kuch baat kar lete hai)

Tips:
1. Though the experiences posted out here would be a good read, don't try to alter your personality or your preparation based on them as the topics you would get or the panel that interviews you might be different.
2. Others experience will only hinder your best performance..
3. Be Prepared for anything ..
4. Interact more with seniors.. you get deeper insights into TISS.. You can analyse yourself if you fit in here or not.

All the best.. Enjoy you stay..
TISS: Truly a institute with head and heart (They are into the business of people after all)
