Ashish
Academic sessions are as rigourous but the rigour comes from the students. Faculty just facilitates...

This happens in every campus and especially at TISS as the no. of students have been limited till the last batch, 30 i.e. From our batch such incidences would be on a decline as no. of students would increase.

If companies go empty handed that speaks good about the college as students were able to make the choice of not going to companies that wanted them, but made the choice on the basis of what their preference was!!!
So it was the sutdent's choice not to join - is what you're saying, right?

This ties in nicely with something I wanted to find out - how are the placements at TISS? I tried searching through the website but was not able to find it.

If these questions have already been discussed somewhere, I'd appreciate if someone could point me to the URL.

My questions are:

1) a )What is the differentiating factor in TISS? What is it that I learn here which is perhaps not so evident in IIMS, XLRIs etc.?
b) If you're a person studying or have studied in TISS, then I want to know how has TISS added to the person you were?

2) What kind of companies recruit here? Specific examples would be helpful.

3) What is the average salary?

4) Someone told me UN also recruits from TISS - True? In what capacity then?

Thanks for the answers, if any.

TISS, as all of you know, is a social science institute. There are courses in sociology, psychology, post-modernism, philosophy and lot more soft issues. Of course there are other courses which are common to other b-schools. This mix of courses prepares and sensitizes students towards people, the softer side of them. In the long run, this is what helps the most. After all we are in the people business. Most of the companies have TISSians as head of their HR divisions. This makes sure that companies keep coming to TISS for recruitment. Recruitment at TISS has always been able to invite creme de la creme of the industry for placements. Students here had the power because of no. of students. It was 30 till last year. This made sure that students always wanted the best companies to come to campus and invariably the best companies in various sectors got the talent. Details of the placement are available at Placement 2007 | Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbaihttp://www.pagalguy.com/index.php?categoryid=54&p2_articleid=683. As there people grew in their organisations and moved to other organisations, they recruited from TISS and today TISSians form a wonderful network.
Average salary this year has been 8.65 Lacs with the lowest being 6.5 and highest being 12. There are various other courses at TISS that cater to various other sectors. There's a course Master's in Health Administration where people have got placed at UNESCO.

Thank you for a quite exhaustive answer.

I love the courses you mentioned. It suits my temperament. The question I asked about the value-add TISS gives is important to me. The thing that really touches my heart is alternative education, new paradigms in education and I'd love to be involved in some kind of social entrepreneurism with this as the background perhaps. However, practical life has its own mind. While I want to do well financially, I don't want to forget my bigger picture. From what I've understood TISS will perhaps nurture this and not stamp it out.

I want money, yes lots of it, but I guess the question I have to answer is just how much importance do I really want to accord it.

Anyway, thanks again. I'll keep a lookout for additional responses, if any.
