Some queries by aspirant! - 27-05-2006, 12:20 PM

Hi Babu,

Thanks a lot for agreeing to be my mentor. You're right, it seems to be the spirit of TISSIANs to help each other out.

Well, even if one half of preparation is OK its the other half, that gets me bothered. I'm currently working and that takes up about good 5-6 days of my week. So as of
right now, the studies are pretty much sunday to sunday kinds. On top of that, the changed pattern of TISS, enuf to add to my sleepless nights. Have some questions for you in this regard.Please give them some time, whenever convenient.

1. Considering this is the first and only MBA ntrance i'd be giving, and my DI, Logical, math etc isnt too great, how and where from do you suggest i prepare?
2. What are all the books/magazines i must have in my blood to be prepared for the essay test. As of rite now, i read TOI n India Today religiously.I dont have any more time left to pick up anything else
3. which is my third question. I read on Pagalguy, that you're working too, when you applied for and got thru TISS. Do you thing the time we're devoting this way is enuf?

Rest of the questions later. Dont want to scare you off in the first mail itself

Would look forward to your mail. Thanks a ton.

Have a nice day.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Its not about being mentor and I do not want to be called one. I have got some information, from my seniors, that I want to give back. You are helping me in doing that. I appreciate that.
Less time for preparation: No amount of time is more than enough for preparation. What ever time you have got is, believe me, enough for preparation. When one has less time, the preparation is more intense. Make sure that what ever time you spend is quality time. I used to work 13 hours a day during my preparation, but I prepared for a period of 9 months. Hence, I covered up. You could do the same.
Change in Examination Pattern: Your apprehension is quite expected. In fact I thought of giving up the exams this year and take it up the next. I believe, its not official, the aptitude is meant to remove the most quantitatively inept candidates. I had almost nil preparation for the aptitude test. However, I had the basics right. That's what helped me in the end. Mathematics section, this time, required only the basic formulas. The questions were very basic. Since my preparation was negligible, I concentrated more on Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning and made sure that each and every answer was correct. I believe, not necessarily true, that DI and LR come naturally. Hence, brush up your basics and make sure that you solve some DI and LR questions. It would help. In short, don't feel bogged down and do your best. You should sail through. Pick up old books for IMS or other classes. It should be enough to prepare for the kind of test that I had taken. God bless if they decide to make the test more intense next time around.
Reading Material: It would definitely help to read TOI, IT etc. Better would be The Hindu. I used to visit, www.indiatogether.org. It's a wonderful resource. Contains all the aspects that TISS would like you to have i.e. Social, Political and Economic Issues are covered in great depth and they do not give biased opinions, that other sources may provide.
I hope this answers your questions satisfactorily. Do let me know of other queries that you might have.
I would be posting this mail on PG. Of course, without your email ID.
-BB
my class mate BABU has been regularly guiding ppl here...n im sure that he has been doing a fabulous job...i thought of joining him here...n making sure tat aspirants can get the right information.after all....a lot of credit for my selection here goes to PG...
anyone of u can get in touch with me or BABU or anyone ele here frm our batch n clarify ur doubts. ths will be the best way to do away with ur confusions as...(luckly)...we do hav a gud idea.rght babu??
hi manjunath....
wel dont u worry...babu n i wil mak sure tat now u stay well informed and all ur doubts r cleared.
ok as for ur query...forms came out in january end....dont rembr the exact dat. the exam was conducted on the 5th of march while the list of candidates shortlisted for GD\PI came out on the 19th of march.GD\PI ws held frm 10-15 of april n the final list ws declared on the 18th of april.....the instt. gives less than a week's time to fulfil all formailities n for verifications....so v had b really prompt. ths is again a special thing with tiss....their entire admission process ws completed in less than two months after the written exams...n tat too in jus ten days after the gd\pi got over....efficiency!!!
wel...i gues tat answers ur question...as for anythng more...babu n i wil b certainly thr to help u arnd.
u tc...all the best.
vipul.
Hi,
I'm Gunjan Shroff. Cleared my BMS in '04, half an anthropologist ( completed first year in MA Sociology) , have 2 years of work experience in human resources. Currently I'm working at CRISIL in the Corporate Human resources team.
Iv been going thru this thread since the last 30 minutes and its been quite an interesting 30 minutes. Its quite a relief to finally get some views from the other side of the road.
This is my 2nd attempt at TISS, the first being immediately after my graduation and no experience. Have to admit my essay sucked and damn we get really lazy when it comes 2 writing but realy active when it comes 2 giving GAS after college.
I guess we could reaallyyyyyyy do with all the tips we can get from u guys who have already been thru this phase..
And I must say its pretty neat of u guys to spare some time and make an attempt to help ppl out..Thanks
hiii gunjan....u do seem to hav a gud amt of work-ex.wel i hav also dun my BMS...not from mumbai though! i am an absolute fresher....no work ex at all....
its gud tat ths thread has helped u gain more knowledge...n a better understanding abt TISS...all the credit goes to BABU.
see as far as essays r concerned...frm my personal experience, i can tel u tat its not a difficult thing at all....al u need is sum ordinary writing skills but a humane approach shud b very much there in the essay.i dint write even a single essay as for prac. before the exam.u get topics frm social n economic field...jus make sure tat u use a lot of examples in the essay.again tats not a sure shot way of cracking the section...tas my assumption n it worked for me pretty wel.
as for any further doubt...we are always thr for u all..
tc...al the best.
Babu,
I’m sure you’d have prepared your essays on these topics as well…would you mind sharing them with the rest of us. For those of us who’ve not written on such heavy topics may get insights from your essays…I’d specially want to read your essay on “ When the cat’s away the rats come to play” J
Last but importantly, Thanks for all the help.
Hey Babu,
Hows you?
I was actually wondering about the same thing, If we could see some of your essays of maybe if you could reconstruct some thoughts for us, that you wrote in the exam...we'll get a better understanding of the winners' strategy
Besides, if you could prempt some topics for this years exams...wich in your opinion may get asked for this year....
I also wanted to know, that of all the essay topics, is there a fixed categorization that is always followed...like there MUST be atleast one essay on a social issue one on business /eco issue etc....
Moreover, if possible can you also jot down a few objective questions that appeared in the exam, coz honestly..i'm still not too sure of the level of this obj test....
Plz help
