for those applying in XLRI - 05-10-2003, 07:36 PM

XLRI offers us a choice between two courses BM(Business management) and PM&IR(personal management and Industrial realtions) and i don't think i have enough knowledge to fully differentiate between the two. So please if any body could give some useful information regarding both the areas not only in terms of course structure but also in terms of placements and which type of job u land up doing either courses.

P.S- Sincere request to those already studying in XLRI

Let me keep it simple for now :

First of all dya know what you want ?
Have u discovered it ?

Er ... well ...
even if u hvnt discovered "Why am i here ? " do not worry atleast knowing why "MBA" ?! ... wud suffice.

Well, not that we have covered that let me make my point
BM, is your typical MBA offered at the premier instis of the country. No confusion regding this.
XL has been offering this course since the 60s.

PMIR - this is the course XLRI started out with in 1949. In damn simple words it is a HR
( u know tht r8?) and Industrial Relations course.

U wud know more abt what each of these programmes hv to offer by knowing more about the courses offered in each of these.

http://www.xlri.ac.in/Courses/Courses.html

(chek out the course outline link in tht )

http://www.xlri.edu/academicscourseoutline.htm

(this link has a few course descriptions)

Abt jobs, BM placements are as good if not better than elsewhere ... check out coolavenues.com or other web sites which offer the details ... All the top fmcgs, IT cos & banks recruit frm here & a few consults. We now ITES, pharma cos and other new recruiters also lining up these days.
But if u want to go ~amrika~ after mba , then get your facts straight 'coz they r few foreign placements here .

PMIR placements are the best for their area of specialization. No second thoughts abt this.

But what do you want to do ? THAT is the question !

'ye n regrds
sujan gowda

PS: when i apped last year, I dint even know what I ticked whether BM or PMIR - until some here on PG.com enquired wat every1 had ticked - luckily of course I had ticked BM bcz thats wat I wanted to do !

Thanks for the help maverick .
I totally agree with u that its more important for us to realize what we want to do , but again as u pointed how many of us really know that.
Most of us here apply and try for the top notch B-schools without even trying to find out what courses they offer and what they teach u there.

Now this is what exactly happened to me until my frnd pointed out that XL is known for its damn good PR course and thats how the confusion arose

Anyhow i just wanted to know that wether we land up doing only HR jobs after PR because that is certainly not my cup of tea

thanks agian

few more doubt

From the form :-

Briefly describe why would you like to join this program?(Maximum of 50 characters are allowed)
1) 'this course' here refers to
MBA in XLRI
OR
BM/PMIR specific ???

2) How do u fit it in 50 characters??

3) Are we filling this(choice) for their information ....or are these final choices (becoz i think these are just tentative choices)

aaah! lemme jump into the fray plez!

for gautam's questions...

1. Take it as a general question...why MBA sorts...but i spose if you're opting for PMIR, wudnt hurt to say sumthing abt that...as to the whys and wherefores...

2.well...we did it dint we? dont go overboard...tell your story in 5-6 lines...you can expand upon your ideas in the interview

3. No this aint tentative in ANY way... this is the FINAL selection... considering you get called for the interview, as most PGites are hopefully gonna be... you'll find that your interview will be based on the options you select here... you're already classified as BM or PMIR...

cheers with evrything else folks...

PS: y'all young tykes @ PG oughta thank your diligent mo-duh-rator Anil for always being on the lookout for time sensitive posts (like this one) and for forwarding them onto PG Alumni for quick responses... let's take a moment and salute the gr8 man

i am not as think as you confused i am...

Hey Folks,

Like usual I seem to hv added to the confusion

Quote:

Hey Guys .. the PMIRs here land up with consult jobs , industrial relations apart from the typical HR jobs . Also I met up with a few xlers who after a few years of HR role in various fmcgs have moved to marketing ( all this again depends on what is ur cup of tea - u'll prolly realise with time OR i suggest u better "realise" now itself by talking to working managers etc etc )

I think I had combined both
neways I will look it up and letya know ... I think I hv preserved tht form of mine for posterity
