Question Are second rung B schools suitable for ppl with work ex in reputed companies? - 02-03-2006, 11:31 PM

Hi all!!

I have just joined this wonderful forum! I am an engineer in a auto maker company of India, with a work ex of 3 yrs. My current CTC is close to 5 lacs pa. I have just converted NMIMS, which unfirtunately was my only call this year, my first attempt at MBA!

Would really like to know that after having worked for 3 yrs in a big company, am I left with options other than IIMs/ISB ???

Second rung schools such as NMIMS, SPJIMR,IIFT etc. will at best give me a marginal increase wrt to my current CTC.

Would like to know from the JUNTA what do they feel abt this. Is this just a notion in my head, or do ppl also think the same way. Responses might just help me make my mind before 19th March ( submission of fees)

Please do respond!!!

buddy,nm is in no way a second rung b school.it has an excellent alumni, awesome infra and even better industry interaction.infact nm also has an asian ranking.it is in the top 10 in india and in some criterias even ranked above iim kozi.if i were u i wud take it.besides most b schools prefer work ex to a maximum of 3 and sometimes 4 years because after tht it becomes difficult to place such students.but if u still want better my advice wud be to go for exec programme at iims or for isb hyderabad.

well...u guys are way senior to me.i am in not a very god position to give you advice.but i agree with you tht exams are a always a one day affair.u never know how u will perform next time.but since u have work ex in reputed companies u will probably be in the higher end of the placement list of any college.if ur company accepts laterals and the college agrees u can return to the same company at a better post with a better pay.so eventually it is ur decision.but if u feel like joining make sure it will go with the profile u want in the future and if the placements tht college provides are as per ur requirements.u r i a better position to decide.so atb to u.tc

Me too stuck in the same dilemma. Actually what differs is what exactly u consider as second rung. Got a final call from NM and i have 2.5 yrs work ex in IT with a fair enuf salary.

dude, you are hurting ppls feelings by calling spjain , iift and nm second rung schools and ppl will try to defend them and quote some survey in which these bschools were the first!

first things first. do NOT even think about joining nmims. you do NOT fit in there. you will only be disappointed as days go by. its ur first attempt so chalta hai.

as far as other bschools : iift has its own test which is poorly managed (search this forum and you will know) where some ppl have got 30 mins more than the rest , the papers were not sealed and what not! SP Jain is a very vague school. it has its own fundas. they want only a certain kind of ppl. You may have calls from all six IIMs but no call from SP Jain coz they have some implicit rules like workex ppl should go here , freshers should go there and so on. Its a lil autocratic , like you cant really choose what you want coz if you do it then you wont be selected in the first place!

IIMs is what you should be looking at here. If you are good at aptitude tests like CAT then you do have a chance. in CAT almost no preference is given to workex and only ppl with a high cat score , even split get calls. IIMB may be different but the rest follow the same pattern. So you can never be too sure of CAT and while working preparing for it may be a problem.

next yr you will have 4yrs of workex and ISBs one yr program will be great for you.

some other schools worth mentioning are XLRI , MDI . thats it.

since you are new here , i would like to tell you that ppl will defend THEIR bschools to death so dont make such sweeping statements like second rung schools and so on , if you want proper replies!

And yeah SP Jain sucks!
