Obviously placement is just one of the criterias but is/are there any other specific reason/s for this or is it just the brand name of IIMs??
Thanks and Regards. |
Me not a JB second year student, but thought of sharing some thoughts on this.
The top three IIMs are great in a lot of ways. But what makes a great B-school??Great faculty and great students. No offences meant to people of non-engineering streams, but dont we all know that our B-schools are full of engineers??And who are the top notch engineers of our country??IITians...It is these IITians who make the cream in IIMs as well.A lot of consultancy and I-banking placements are bagged by these chaps, not to mention the intellectual value that they add to their institutes. And this then starts running like a tradition:One chap gets in,and his juniors follow. That the IIMs are built on a similar model like IITs make them a natural prefernce for IITians. So while you do have IITians,BITS Pilani grads etc in JBIMS,XL,FMS etc, they are more abundant in the big IIMs.As of faculty,we know that faculty at these instis is great.
Now coming to industry.Industry requires smart and open-to-learning chaps who have a vision towards work and contribution to society. With the exception of extremely technical profiles, any chap with good enough skills and attitude can make it to the top in industry. You dont need extreme analytical ability everywhere. So basically beyond your initial placement, industry doesnt care much about your B-school brand but more about how you can deliver. In the latest BT edition, you can read an article by the HR head of ICICI bank wherein he clearly says that ones degree and excellent marks dont matter any more once he is in the workplace. Those were just screening criteria. If not exactly this approch,I am sure that a lot many companies think on similar lines...
As far as JBIMS goes,it has got to be one of the very best institutes in terms of giving you this real world exposure. It is one thing gaining theorotical knowledege. It is quite another thing learning what is happening in the real world, discussing M&A deals live with people who do it,dissecting channel strategies live with Marketing honchos, preparing business plans which are implemented by industry.....so all-in-all JBIMS serves the basic purpose of a B-school excellently...and the performance of its alumni illustrates that.
As far as brand name goes,JBIMS is a very very respected brand in circles where it matters:corporate houses.Imagine getting into a company wherein a third of the senior management is your college alumni.......
Saying that A/B/C are the top three institutes in the country is a given...so I dont think there is a cllege comparison issue here. But after that, its upto the student to make an informed choice.Amongst L/XL/JB/I/K....I have numerous examples of students who took this one and left that one.....in combinations that many consider weird....but its all individual perception I guess......
