SIES College of Management Studies (SIESCOMS)
Presents
Panel discussion on Current Downturn and Management Education as a Career Option
Background:
The Indian economic & financial scenario is currently under a deep strain. Almost all the sectors are in a phase of economic and production / services downturn. Consequently the job market is also slackening. As productivity and strategic cost management become norm of the day, demand for fresh talent has considerably slowed down. In some of developed markets particularly in USA there is an inverse relationship between slack in job market opportunities and demand for b-school entrants. This happens as more people want to get equipped with competencies needed to manage corporate world in a difficult scenario. Whether this is true for Indian situation is yet to be proved though there are arguments on both sides i.e.
whether to go in or not to go in for management education in a difficult economic scenario like the current one. However, the fact is obvious: competencies needed in situation like this are considerably different than those under normal circumstances.
Objectives:
Under the above scenario, this panel discussion attempts to address some of the issues that are hovering in minds of the potential entrants for management education either those who are employed or who are just writing final year examination. The discussion attempts to answer some of the following issues:
How to look at career and career options in such a difficult juncture of
economy?
What are the core competencies needed in such a situation to be successful
at work?
What are the important criteria one should look at before opting for
management education?
