criteria for assessment/comparison of our institutes - 12-05-2003, 12:07 PM

hi guys...
after weeks of meditation and deep introspection , i have come up with the following criteria to compare b-schools. you are free to debate on them , so that we can come up with a final list which all alumni can use to rate their institutes which could be used as a benchmark for guys next yr:

criteria are:
COURSE:
1)faculty expertise in subject and teaching ability
(to convey that expertise to us students)
2)Format of course
( case based ,mgmt games are generally more helpful in terms of real management scenarios than lectures)

3)Relevance of course in todays management scenario
( u dont want to be learning something that u dont think is applicable )

4)grading system
( if u work hard, then regular grading is better..if u work towards end.end terms grading might be better

CLASS/STUDENTS OF BATCH
1)background of class
( diversity of backgrounds are always better for discussing issues)
2)Batch work ex
( i happen to believe that people with work ex contribute better to discussions coz they r more practical about whats possible)
3)Competition level /intra batch atmosphere
(whether cutthroat or lighter, this is important coz u dont want people to think u r threat to that mckinsey job....rather learning from each other is whats important)

RESEARCH
1) student participation in faculty research
( for those of us with s research bent of mind, this is an imp criteria..coz it adds huge value to ur resume)
2) no of papers, cases published
(again for those looking for mastery of a subject, its imp......for those looking for a good placement..dont worry too much on this)

INDUSTRY INTERFACE
1)faculty interaction with industry -
( how many places r they consulting, how many company boards r they on, coz this adds value to ur course n learning)

2)industry taking lectures /course
(excellent opportunity to interact with the guys out there...do ur networking n learn a lot of the real stuff)

3)Lectures/discussions/case competitions with industry personalities
(these r a lil few and not too long to add dramatic value, but nothinhg like listening it from vindi banga , sunil alagh or have bcg guys assess ur case analysis)

EXTRA-CURRICULARS
1) diversity of options to participate in
(besides the standard mgmt clubs , what kind of chances do u ahve to develope ur creative talents like drama, writing ,music etc)
2) Chance to participate in inter-college level comp
(method of selection of people rep the college, how much does ur acads allow u to participate)
3) Level of extra-curriculars
( how mch value will these add to my resume.....if i write a paper for a club, stage a drama for the college..etc)

INFRASTRUCTURE
1) Hostel
(quality of rooms , food at mess, atmosphere both acaedmic n social)
2) IT
(availablity of comps, printers, std of networking(the IT one)...
3)Library
(latest books/mags, no of copies, cooperation of staff)
4) Classrooms
(do they faciliate teaching of the course n real learning)

EXCHANGE PROGRAM
1) no of people going for exchange program
2) modes of international exposure
(if u dont get selected for exchange prog, does that mean no chance of int exposure)
3) quality of universiies in student exchange

PLACEMENTS
1) brand image of institute ,students and faculty in industry
2) Recruiter satisfaction
(u can assess this by seeing how many come back to ur campus)
3) no of people taken by company and job profiles
( more people taken means company likes ur college ....also discuss level of job profiles..what kind fo work will u really be doing)
4) sector wise performance and median salary
(how does ur institute perform across the sectors of mktg, fin, sys ,ops,hr,strat)

PERSONAL
personal issues that may affct u ..like location close to home, weather, etc...

do comment on this...n lets try n finalise some criteria...!!

regds,
Lyndon

i will add these 2...

TECHNOLOGY:
how much the b-school stresses on technology in terms of computers i.e laptops.
some schools want assignments to submitted by email to that profs id.

SUMMER PLACEMENTS..
i know some new schools like IBA,bangalore-though its not much heard of among students but a person i know whose cousin is studying there is raving about it.
they take entire batch of students to UK [flight and accmd incl in 2.9 lakhs fees-2 yr fees]

Hi guys !

How abt a separate thread on each institute once we get settled in there. We can post our first impressions and then keep on adding whatever addnl info we get on the same thread.

Hey Lyndon, sorry for getting onto this thread so late. The list is mighty exhaustive and pretty much covers all the areas.

But comparison becomes inevitable once we start putting up information about all institutes based on the criterias. Shouldn't we be having a weightage system for the various aspects you have mentioned in the list.

This way we can slowly proceed towards a ranking system ( Ok, I don't know how good or a bad idea it is ).

Once the information comes in the perception can turn out to be varied and will get refined in due course of time. But you'll have to take charge of this issue.. Aitey ?

Re: criteria for assessment/comparison of our institutes - 05-06-2003, 12:52 PM

hi all...
sorry for the delay in followng up on this issue..jus back after a good vacation..n at work for my last 10 days....

as the majority say on another thread, i am also not in favor of rankings simply because
each alumni will have different levels of expectation from their insittute and diff measures of whether those expectations are satisfied or not. also, dont know how objective people r when talkign bout their alma mater.

the aim of this thread for me, was to think of criteria to assess any institute n thats what im gonna do for IIMC.....
2 reasons for this...one it helps people to get the real picture of whats going on.....

HOWEVER, I STILL DONT THINK THIS CAN BE USED FOR COMPARISON....coz philips opinion on iima, kunal and deepaks on imb and mine n bharats on iimc NEED NOT BE COMPARABLE .
for eg....on a separate thread posted by anush38 about IIM experiences...the person at IIMC wasnt too happy bout it......but ive met n talked to alumni from C ..some of who support this view..but many who were very satified with their exp.....so if this happens within an institute ....it DEFINITELY will occur among the various IIMs.

what this thread can be is......some criteria is laid down n every person shares their xperience OBJECTIVELY on thier institute.

so this becomes a source of information about the reality within an insititute ...n not a direct method of comparison between insittues...
if someone wants to use this as a basis of comparison....they do it on their own risk....

id suggest taking the review with a pinch of salt........

thats all for now,
will do the monthly or termwise posting....at the start n end....

Lyndon
