Here I am, less than 20 hours for Sem I exams to begin... And yet... Am updating this thread... *Why, oh Why, am I so masochist to forget everything else in crunch situations and rush here!!!*
Well, as I said, exams begin tomorrow, to go on till the 4th. I've made it to one of the working teams, so will be working with them for now as well, in parallel!!
SIBM, being a student driven insti, has a lot of activities being handled by students themselves. Alumni interactions, Corporate Interactions, IT, Knowlegde, Placements, Admissions, et al... All handled by student run teams.
The office (better known as the 4th Floor ) does coordinate with everyone, but decisions are taken by the students themselves.
Well, enough for now... Back to studies, grond... get back to studies!!
Regards,
Harshal

Join Date: Jan 2006 Location: Barad-dur Age: 26 | Life @ SIBM... Chennai here I am! -
21-11-2006, 10:28 PM
My, my. What a way to enter Chennai. My first visit to the city. I don’t know a word of the local language, the local english undecipherable... and my friend’s scooter, carrying the both of us, my two bags, a roll of banners, and a backpack decides to stop in the middle of the road. A roadside mechanic soon parts us with some of our (parents’) monies to get us back on track.
Ohk... why is a thread on SIBM being addled upon about Chennai? Well, you see, as I am the only (substantial) contributor to this thread as of now (Mods... wanna rename this thread Grond’s Life@SIBM???) and I’m in Chennai... and anandv requested me (ordered or forced would be the correct word tho...)
Am in Chennai for Coffee With SIBM, an event for MBA aspirants wanting to join SIBM. PG here is our strategic partner for the same. So instead of the first week of the second semester, read on about my first visit to the south of India. Someone asked my why I don’t blog (last line in my signature... please...)Now, now... why should I, when I have this thread?
The Bay of Bengal from Besant Nagar Beach is not too different from the Arabian sea from Juhu Chowpatty. Except, the waters are purer, deeper, bluer, the beaches sandier, longer. There’s the same flotsam, the same beach food, the same couples, the same merry-go-rounds, the same balloon targets. But the scars of the tsunami 23 months ago still remain, in the broken concrete structures around the beach.
Chennai worships its leaders & filmstars. You find them everywhere. On posters, walls, billboards, statues (yes!) and so on. There is a tendency to photograph every leader, (and every leader’s to get photographed) and most of them inevitably in a close-up of the thinker’s pose. Will someone tell them that it’s a schoolgirl’s pose, way past its expiry date?
The roads are WIDE. For a Mumbaiite, atleast. And how can the Chennai police vehicles look more like out of a Hollywood film? I mean, the C segment vehicles, with blue & red lights on top! How can they afford them? And first aid boxes on every traffic junction! How? Don’t they get pilfered daily?
Another thing I’ve noticed is that every other scooter in the city is a Scooty (Pep, Pep+, ES... whatever make, but a Scooty). Now, this is a bike I believed was for girls. Because its tiny. When I drive it, forget a pillion rider, there’s no space for my backpack! It hangs behind the scooter(ette, actually) the same way as it would had I been the pillion rider. Yet, I find men and women alike riding it with abandon. How can they fit??
Enigmas, enigmas. Chennai is an enigma for me. Tuesday’s over. I leave on Saturday morning. How shall I answer these enigmas by then? Any ideas, anyone?
Ok... enough for today. More after the end of CWS, and I return back to college life...

PING!!!!
The problems one has with blogging one's BSchool life...
I'm not a veterate blogger, so keep forgetting that there is a place called life@SIBM that I have to write about... well, am relatively free now...
So what happened since I last wrote about chennai? Lots...
Placements & lectures during placements, placement volunteering, Admissions, Admissions process planning, Measles, GD/PI, Transcend, Budget Symposium, Management Day...
And yes, lectures, assignments & classes as well...
Oh... some good stuff that happened, in chronological order...
Was tech incharge, Transcend 2007. Saw, at close quarters, how SCMHRD missed out of finals by 1 point in the Quiz... a Crucible before a crucible (3 of the finalists were regional round winners of Tata Crucible) and the quizmaster, Giri, was the same for Crucible and for us...
Was tech incharge, Budget Symposium 2007. Organized, for the first time in the history of Symbiosis, a live telecast of the Budget. The novelty was not a live telecast, but the very feeding of a TV signal into the audi and on the screen.
Won the award for the Best Creative Student of the year.
Won the best question award at the Harsha Bhogle Guest lecture/interaction.

Well...
What a week!!!
Exams ended last friday. Saturday, Sunday & Monday spent packing and moving out. The society where we rented our flat ruled against having students, so our landlord kicked us out. Anyways...
Well, everyone in the first year is now (almost) out of Pune - some seven or so excluded - they're doing their summers in Pune itself. The others are spread all over India. I'm in Mumbai, luckily at home. Two of my roommates are in Gurgaon, two Mumbai, and one in Calcutta. Almost all of us - except the one in ICICI corpfin - are sure to have to move around, with our cities as reporting bases. That is surely the story of many of us, especially those with marketing profiles - the projects are marketing research based, having to let us go all out to the market to find out the facts.
Lets see what happens in the next two months. I'm in Sony Tv, and have a profile based in Events & Promotions... Will keep this thread spradically updated with what'll happen...

Ah. Well.
What can I say? That I forgot this thread existed? Yes, I did. Ok now?
Many have shown a penchant for finding their life partners during their MBA. SIBM students, my batchmates & classmates, are no different. My roommates, classmates, friends, et al. One of our classmates shocked us all by announcing her engagement during our summers internship. Tomorrow, a very close friend of mine walks the same path with a guy arranged by her parents. Seemingly, they didn't want to risk her finding her own match. Given that her choices were not few, but the SIBM male community, I wonder............
Classes have begun again, juniors have arrived... Time now to get back the groove. Of studies. Of work. Of having fun. Of everything. But when the schedule itself is half of what it was before, I'll be happy if I get even half my groove back.

Hmmm...My 1st post after landing in SIBM...An experience totally different from the corporates...I landed myself in a pool of intelligent people striving for existence but co-operating as well...After the hosts of induction lectures, we found ourselves in the regular classes....Hordes and hordes of assignments r poured onto us and it continues s I m writing this post here...But in general life is fun...College starts at 9.00am in the morning and ends at 4.40pm....But rarely do v retire at that time...We normally have some special classes or some lectures or student council addressing us...
Being a student driven institute I m already feeling like working in a corporate...I m just waiting to enter a council and start working...
Food is never a problem in SIBM...There r lots of hotels around and if tired of them, there is always the mess (amazing food in it in comparison to other mess!!!)...
All in all, it is a great experience so far and I will be updating this page more often in future. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
