Also would you be kind enough to tell me about the accommodation scene around the insti. How easy is it to acquire a decent flat in the area? I am planning to come a day or two before the course starts to look for flats. What about those scary tales of water scarcity in chennai?

Thanks again,
PR
Well if u decide to come with your laptop then Mngmt will be cool with anything so no sweat there

As fr accommodation, let me explain the scene

Most of our current batch puts up in the colony where the college is currently located and that being Srinagar colony. When we came here then v took the flats of our seniors and thats exactly wht u guys will have to do once you are here.

Flats are decent albeit slightly expensive however when 3-4 guys or gals stay together then it does not pinch hard.Water scarcity is nt a big issue so no need to worry about that. Now here is the important part..........our batch will stay till april end and its only in May beginning that v guys will start vacating our flats. Hence fr a week or so u guys will have to put up in near by guest houses as we did( dnt worry abt that too as college has an entire list of such temporary accommodations in near by places)

Coming 2-3 days before commencement of course may not be a smart move as u will realise that the flats of most of the seniors is already booked. Best move wld be that once u guys have payed ur initial deposit u ppl can start contacting current batch students through the Jaycees community in orkut. This way u guys can reserve flats for urself.

I hope this post will have given u sum idea abt how its gonna be like with regards to accommodation. For rest u guys can go ahead and ask as many queries u want to ( dont take this line too seriously!! ;-) )

Cheers

For all your days prepare....
And meet them ever alike......
When you are the anvil, bear....
When you are the hammer, STRIKE!!!:grab:

Well said Caulfield. This guy seems to be really upset with Great Lakes meteoric rise.

Anyways I'll still go on and express my views on this blog.

1. GREAT LAKES IS NOT OFFERING AN AICTE APPROVED COURSE.

Everybody knows that. Interestingly there was a comment from FICCI about AICTE, which can be read at: The MBA Universe :- News & Updates

2. GREAT LAKES HAS A VERY POOR B-SCHOOL RANKING.

We have never participated in any rankings. This one was conducted by PG and is based on perceptions rather than hard facts.

3. DON’T GO ON FIGURES…THE PLACEMENTS AIN’T SO GREAT

Now i really dont understand whats wrong with accepting offers from HCL or Infy BPO. If one studies the Financial Statements of HCL, in the last 2 years, it has transformed itself to be one of the fastest growing Services company in India. Isnt that a reason good enough to join HCL? Moreover HCL offers excellent profiles to Great Lakers, which puts you in fast paced organizational growth.

Infy BPO, is different from most of the BPOs in India. The kind of analytics they are into calls for a change of mindset that we have for BPOs. The guy who received Infy BPO offer actually rejected a high paying offer from another Services firm because of the profile offered by Infy BPO.

4. GREAT LAKES DOES NOT HAS ITS OWN CAMPUS.

The entire world knows that Great Lakes is operating from a temporary campus. If you have any doubts about the construction of the new campus, I suggest u visit Chennai and see the construction site yourself. The new campus would be up and running by the end of this year.

5. GREAT LAKES HAVE ONLY 6-7 PEOPLE AS PERMANENT FACULTY.

Trust me whatever be the number of permanent/visiting faculty, the education quality at GL is of the highest standards in India.

The blog ends with "I will say no more". Well dude (Mr. Blogger) if you are reading this post, I suggest u channelize your energy towards better means and stop being so critical about Great Lakes.

Cheers,
Bhaski.

I would like to post my take on the above BLOG below..!!

1. GREAT LAKES IS NOT OFFERING AN AICTE APPROVED COURSE.

Great Lakes is not hiding this fact. They clearly mention the same in their website and also is open to all the query related to this. I personally had mailed them before applying asking about this. And i got a satisfactory reply.:-)

They are not getting approval from AICTE because GLAKES MBA is a one year program and AICTE is not having rules in place as on today to recognize a one year MBA program. Even ISB is not having AICTE approval for that matter.

Yes.. the colleges INSIDER mentions in his post failed to get an approval... But I really don’t think GLAKES will have to follow the same path.. And GLAKES is a risk worth taking..

2. GREAT LAKES HAS A VERY POOR B-SCHOOL RANKING.

The PaGaLGuY ranking which INSIDER is referring to is based on the responses of around 5000 (only!) students. I being from north India, know how many students are aware of the institute. Only a handful.. When i told my friends that i am applying to GLAKES, thy asked me 'What is that':whatthat:!!

So my point is, how many people will rank a college when they have not heard about it? A small publicity event by GLAKES in north India will do the trick next time around.

Another reason which i feel why GLAKES lost in the ranking (35th in PUY Ranking!) is may be because GLAKES is yet to have its own campus. This issue will also be addressed (hopefully!) by next year!!

3. DON’T GO ON FIGURES…THE PLACEMENTS AIN’T SO GREAT

Yes! Even i feel GLAKES have to come up with separate stats for both DOMESTIC as well as FOREIGN placements. But then 9.3LPA (2007 figures!) is not at all bad for a newbie college like GLAKES. :-)Which other college in India can boast of such stats just after couple of years of inception??

4. GREAT LAKES DOES NOT HAS ITS OWN CAMPUS.

GLAKES never hid this fact. They clearly says they are yet to have a campus of its own. Since INSIDER mentioned about the 5 colleges, i would like to say something about that too. If you see the brochure of these 5 (or is it 3?) colleges, they no where mention that the building is shared by 5 colleges. It is a shock waiting for the aspirants on their first day to those colleges!!

Now regarding the timeline and the delay… We all with WorkEx should quite easily understand that almost all the projects (atleast in INDIA.. donno if it has something to do with Indian Stretchable Time!) get delayed.. how many of us can boast of saying they never overshot their deadlines…? :sleepy:

I sincerely hope the campus is up by next year!!

5. GREAT LAKES HAVE ONLY 6-7 PEOPLE AS PERMANENT FACULTY

Yes! The number of permanent faculty in GLAKES is quite low to the standards. But then the list is growing quite rapidly. Very recently, two of the famous figures in India (As well as management), Prof. T. N. Sheshan and Prof Nirmal Gupta.:-)

I would like to end this discussion with another BLOG link. As all these started with a BLOG, this might as well put an end to it.

NoeL

NB: I am neither an INSIDER nor do i know anyone personally in GLAKES. I am just another one like who is hoping to get into GLAKES...! :-)

Re: Life @ Great Lakes Inst. of Mgmt-Chennai - 10-03-2008, 02:12 PM

Hi everyone. I have gotten thru to Greatlakes but in a dilemma now since the institute is not going to be offering Strategy, OB and HR as a major any more. I was hoping to specialize in this. I would appreciate if any of the seniors in the current batch can take a few moments out to clarify a few concerns as it would help me make a decision.

If I take this up as a minor will I still have a chance of being placed in the HRM function. How were placements for people who took up this specialization in the current batch ?
