Stanford Business School News Letter

Headlines - New Research Center Named for Srinivasan - Stanford GSB

STANFORD GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS — India’s Great Lakes Institute of Management has created the Kotler-Srinivasan Centre for Research in Marketing to develop knowledge in marketing, focusing on research in India and its global role. The center is named for Professor Philip Kotler, S. C. Johnson & Son Distinguished Professor of International Marketing of the Kellogg School of Management, and V. Seenu Srinivasan, the Adams Distinguished Professor of Management at the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Great Lakes Institute, located in Chennai (formerly Madras) in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, announced creation of the new center in July 2006.

Speaking on this occasion, Dr. Bala Balachandran, founder and honorary dean of the school, said, "Given the natural core competencies and expertise on hand, we at Great Lakes have decided to make marketing our focus.” The research center will focus on marketing and sales research in India and will help transfer global concepts to local needs. Professor Srinivasan will act as an advisor to the center. He has given several talks on market research topics at the Great Lakes Institute

Mr Subir Mehra, Head of Commercial Banking, HSBC India, was at Great Lakes on 4th Dec’2006.

Graduate from Kellogg Graduate School of Business, he enthralled all of us with his talk on “Careers in Banking”. He took us through the various career options like Treasury, Corporate Banking, Trade Finance etc, and patiently went forward to answer every question that Great Lakers had. For a person of his stature, he was very down to earth and delivered a perfectly drafted presentation.

The talk was not only beneficial for Great Lakers who want to pursue their career in Banking Industry, but also for all others.

Reliance Retail @ Great Lakes

Today we had the pleasure of having amongst us Mr Venkatrama, VP - HR, Reliance Retail, with us for the guest lecture. He took us through the careers in Retail industry and the expansion plans of Reliance Retail. This was followed by Q&A session wherein he patiently answered questions posed by Great Lakers.

Being informal, Mr Venkatrama took us through a very lively interaction. Continuing with Skull Sessions, the team surely has done amazing job with people across various domains coming and sharing their experiences.

Kudos to Guest Lecture Team

Re: Life @ Great Lakes Inst. of Mgmt-Chennai - 20-12-2006, 01:37 AM

Heyyyyy guys writing abt the life at Great Lakes after a looooong tym....
Well let me come one by one........ lets start of with the academics:
Acads: well genuinely we are having some awesome profs from Harvard, Kellog, Columbia, etc etc coming down... and some more shining names in the coming month... the classes are just hell of an education for me as the global perspectives we are getting are phenomenal.... some of the keywords of some of the most renowned profs "I can make any business global", "If u dont strategise well, better suck ur thumb", "Some strategies are meant to be sexy" etc etc (oh ! u guys almost had a class... phew joking !)
Classes start as early as 6.30 in the morning... and go uptill 11... 12 in the night.... i wrote an exam today at 11.30... The best part of the classes which i enjoy are the 15 mins breaks where u can go out for some entertainment in life (eg. tea, biscuits...)
Assignments, Presentations, and exams are integral part of glakers and now ppl are sort of immune to these pressures (all of us are masters of outsourcing strategies... doesnt help actually... because all are budding managers )... well the level of presentations continue to impress proffs from round the globe though(did i spk much abt the students??)

Extracurriculars: well coming to xtracurriculars.... we really feel that extracurriculars should not be included in syllabus(heyyy.. now u know me.. am an illiterate mba)... for example i am in the admissions committee and as a regular practice... i break my head with my co-members about the interviews, how to speed up things, the queries which u ppl brutally throw at us to solve, contacting the interviewers... blah blah blah.... the other poor soul here called Manik Kinra, in the placement committee, is seen to run the stairs like an unmaaaaaaaad when a company comes in for ppt.. or when the flights of the company ppl are delayed or when he makes some strong rules and regulations at the placement scene !! The committe which is the most sought after committee for budday bumps now a days is the food committee.... well trully speaking, being a student run institute, glakes makes us run evrywhere.... btw just a bit of more elaboration on the adcom... the whole of the online process has been negotiated and run by us, the entire procedures is decided by us.... and we maintain that no one hinders our ways(main hoon don types....).......
well the new bug which is biting the college is that of L'Attitude 13 05.... and as a member of that also(my life is dedicated to illiteracy... dont worry)... I am looking after the events... there are 2 ppl who are looking after the sponsorships... and there motto in life is to beg, borrow and steal ! there are a few of us who look like crazy nomads after v are stuck at some point in the midst of night(pls note that the all india fest is being organised in a 44 days notice....)... can u ppl do us a favor?... pls click onL'attitude 1305 and go thru the details...

Placements: its confidential.... wont say even if u ppl pm me

am feeling sleepy... cant write this post anymore... wait for the next edition....

Yale - Great Lakes Research Center - First International Conference
Indra Nooyi Visits Great Lakes

President and CEO of Pepsi Co., Ms. Indra Nooyi, was on of the distinguished guests at Yale - Great Lakes First International Conference. Though she did not stay back for long, but marked her presence with some intelligent and witty quotes. As a member of Board of Yale University, she said that she would make sure Yale - Great Lakes Centre achieve stardom in field of Management Research.

The International Conference on "Global Mindset Indian Roots" was a run away success with Academicians from across the globe presenting their cases. We had professors from Kellogg, Standford, North Carolina, University of Toronto, Georgia State, ISB, IIM A, IIM B, MDI, XLRI, IITs to name a few. People from industry also were present with speakers from Preferred Brands International, TCS, Hexaware, Orchid, Delta Management USA and Reliance Industries.

The conference marks the first step towards providing a platform for Management Research on India. With Dr Venkat Krishnan (Director Yale - Great Lakes Center) at the helm of the research center, i am sure Great Lakes is all set to have another feather in its cap at such an early stage of its evolution.
