Hiya peepz,

here comes haripi express - part 2 with all details about the first month life @ Great lakes. Its been a hectic ride so far with my average hours of sleep reducing from 10/day to 6 /day with signs forboding that it is going to get much worser. . we have 8 sujects this term including chinese with 2 subjects already been completed . we have also finished the final exam of FinAc last saturday.

The subjects we have this term are FinAc,macroeconomics, statistics, marketing, strategy ,chinese,Business communication and corporate finance. So far 6 subjects have been taught by 4 foreign profs and two by reputed indian faculty. The quality of faculty has been so good that i can say that these are the best teachers i have gt after my 12th wherein i had a gem of a maths teacher. All foreign profs are PhD's in their respective fields. so that shud give u an idea of the knowledge level they poses and the best part has been that they have come down to our level to teach and ensure that whatever they impart has been completely absorbed by the students.

so far the toughest subject seems to be macroecon becoz it involves a great deal of studying as well as analytical skills. But the prof has done such a great job in making sure that our basics are proper w.r.t classical and keynesian economics. The last class wherein we had a case analysis of the indian economy post liberalisation was spellbinding. we had done close to 10 assignments in macroecon alone . The prof is a gold medallist in ecnomics and frequently writes for businesline.

FinAc we had a prof from FIU teaching us , Strategy by a prof from Texas alington,Buss comm by a prof from IIT,Chicago and marketing also by a faculty from IIT,chicago.i am mentioning the profs becoz i feel last year not many knew about the quality of faculty who had taught our seniors. this year its getting even beter eith a wide diaspora of international faculty.

The classes are held with a clear focus on equal class participation.we are divided into groups and we do some projects in groups which brings out the cameraderie between us.

The unique USP of Great lakes has been the focus of learning chinese . we have been getting a person of great repute who knows close to 10 languages teaching us. class is great fun as all of us shout chinese and its queer when we hear strange sounds. regarding chinese i would like to give u guyz a brief intro. chinese language is based on how it is enunciated.phonetics play a very important role.for eg: li can be spelt in four different tones which carry different meanings.the tones are high low, base and a curvy tone. curvy means like wuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...

we also learnt how to call numbers till 1 crore.

for eg : 111111 is called as yi shr yi wan yi chyan yi bai yi shr yi . how does it sound?? the emphasis shud def be on the enunciation.

we had two done 2 mock presentations one on submitting a business proposal to the mayor of chennai abt a new start up business and the oher on teamwork.it was videotaped and we got an idea as to what our weaknesseses were when it comes to presentation skills.

we also had 3 guest lectures one on brand positioning, one on winning vision and other abt murugappa group by their director vellayan.

thats all reg great lakes.more abt Great lakes in the next express.

reg venky monke** i do admit they rock..but they remain as mon**** .j.k..

my bro is gonna kill me if he sees this post..

1st Term Over @ great lakes - 14-06-2005, 06:57 PM

Its official..Yes we have completed 12.5% of our course when still majority of our contemporaries are yet to start with their lessons.Does that count as a headstart??

I am breathing after a week of hectic tests, assignments, presentations. 6 subjects excluding chinese. barring marketing all other subjects exams were over.

The schedule for last week was 7 * 6 = 42 hours of class
+
4 * 2 hours of exam

+ 3 assignments(6/assgn) = 68 hrs apart fropm studying for our exams.

saturday exam got over and sunday was semester leave and i was in college till 5 AM monday to finish the strategy assignment. Its really tight guyz...B-School Life ain't easy and my profs promise me that it is going to get worser. but i am beginning to enjoy the pressure. 2 new subjects for the current sem have started and we have close to 7 hrs of contact classes everyday.some days we do get lucky and we have just 4 hrs. saturday relaxed a bit and went for D (film) . sunday i had to make it up and result was 5 AM night out. some guyz were awake the whole night.

rest of teh gang freaked out by going to BelaChow..(hope spelling is not wrong. )
we might in all probability be getting the former RBI governor to give us a GL this term.Besides Uncle bala will be teaching us this term. ,looking forward to his lectures.. . All profs we had till now have been amazing. simply the best. 90% are foreign faculty ,majority of em who had done MBA from IIMs and then PhD's from US univs and have been teaching and doing research in US. the remaining Indian faculty are also studs from top 10 b-schools in India.

I found that at least 4-5 profs who have taught us so far did their PG from IIMC. IIMC rocks w.r.t producing quality professors and research personnel.

we have also formed commitees for conducting various tasks like PR,placements, admissions,Events,General consulting etc.. . Any guesses for what commitee i am in??..obviously PR..

The best part is we are getting noticed which is visible in the amt of media space we are getting. We need to carry the message forward and i feel that PG is the best forum to really tell abt what is really happening at Great lakes.Being a old timer i guess it adds more to the veracity of my posts.

the best compliment we received in recent times was a statement by a CTS top management person who said that they recruit only from the top 8 B-Schools of India and Great lakes is one among them and added that he had unshakeable faith in the ability of Uncle bala.way to go i guess..

Any further enquiries u can PM me guyz or drop in a comment in my Blog. i will be more than willing to help.

Prashanth

Hi Prashanthi,

well....since the campus is nt in place yet....the students are managing by leasing some of the flats around the locality. The inst. ds have a tie up of sorts ...but that place is kinda far...so many outstation guys took it up as interim acco....
yeah,....we've got loads of day schi's.....more than 40 students are frm chennai....though most of us also have shftd clsr to the inst.
Abt the fees....this yr the fees came up to 4.37...thts inclusive of the laptop for 70k...obviously likely to increase next yr......
hope this clarifies ur queries...
cheers
Mru

Hope Mrudula's post answered the quesitons raised.

We had a 4 day break and the classes resumed today. Term 1 was hectic. We were told that Term 2 would be relatively easy. We are looking forward to Uncle Bala's (our dean) class early July.

The assignments and projects are challenging. A lot of learning has happened since we stepped into Great Lakes.

hi

Check this article which highlights the great lakes institute

Great Lakes is a particularly odd name for a school in Chennai given that the city is perpetually short of water. The name derives from the adopted American geography of the school's backers - a group of Indian academics at some of the most reputable business schools in the United States.

The school also has a collaborative arrangement with the Ivy League, hosting visiting faculty members from Yale University in New Haven.

Launched as a non-profit establishment, Great Lakes was bankrolled by Bala Balachandran, an accounting professor at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management who hails from India's southern Tamil Nadu state. Chennai is its capital.

It's not the first institution of higher learning in India to offer Putonghua. But to earn a degree here, Chinese language skills are mandatory, not optional. And although students won't be fluent by the time they finish their one-year management program, their familiarity with the basics will make them more marketable, predicts S Sriram, executive director of Great Lakes.

To bolster Krishnan's efforts, the school is in preliminary talks with universities in Shanghai and Hong Kong to facilitate faculty exchanges and beef up its Putonghua teaching staff.

Guys please reply - 24-06-2005, 11:55 PM

HI aal those guys who are in Great lakes (GLIM). My name is Mayank Gupta.
I belong to New Delhi. I will definitely apply to GLIM this year. But
let me tell you about my background. I am a BCA graduate but telling you
frankly that I dont have any interests in coding and computer programming.
the biggest mistake I did in my life was taking BCA as my graduation. I
completed my graduation in the year 2003. After my grads I started working
for a call centre. I worked there for an year as customer care executive.
In sep 2004 I left my Call centre and preparep for CAT and all those
exams but not able to get thru any of those good institutes. Now I am
planning to join a 1 year Diploma course in Financial Planning. Here
in delhi there is an institute which offers 1 year diploma in Financial
planning. they say that it had a great future but frankly speaking that
I am doing this bcoz I dont want to sit idle at home and want to learn
something concrete so that I can overcome my Bca graduation. Thats why
I am choosing finance. Please enlighten me that if I am a good candidate
for GLIM or not. OR my Financial planning options is really a good option
or not. Do this really have a good future. Please reply. I am really
depressed and need help from you guys.
