Ms.Raji Srinivasan, Professor of Strategic Management visited Great Lakes on November 6th. During the session, Ms.Raji gave us an overview of the "Resource based view of a firm". She dwelt in detail about the importance of crafting and sustaining a competitive strategy for a firm. She also gave a lucid description of the concepts of capability and resource in the context of businesses and explained how the two result in superior efficiency, innovation and quality. The question and answer session following the discussion was just as informative and interesting as the session with a high degree of student participation.

Mr. M. Humayun, Regional Director (Sales) – Virgin Mobile, visited Great Lakes on 11th Nov 2008. He carried along with him a rich experience of 20 years and had worked in firms like Nestle and Hutch (current Vodafone). During the session, Humayun presented an overview about the Telecom industry in India. He then proceeded to enumerate about the marketing strategy of Virgin Mobile in the Indian Telecom sector. The discussion generated about the perception of a rural mobile subscriber was the most interesting of all of them. The question and answer session following the discussion was just as informative and interesting as the session with a high degree of student participation.

Dear All,
Pls. find below the summary of Mr.Raman Nurani’s guest lecture that happened on November 3, 2008.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Mr.Raman Nurani, Senior Director, KLA Tencor India, gave a lecture on the semiconductor industry, on the global scale and the industry in India.
He began with the basics of what exactly a semiconductor is. He went deep into how they are made, the materials used, the production processes involved etc. The numbers he mentioned and the scales discussed were mind boggling. The fact that a few microns could hold millions of transistors was already known to most of the audience. But when he showed actual pictures showing these amazing structures, the effect was one of amazement and awe.
He discussed where semiconductors were used and the applications in today's major electronics industries. At the same time, he also discussed the major manufacturers of semiconductors around the world and some projections of future demand.
He ended the day with some projections of where the semiconductor industry was going and a brief insight into the applications of the future that would drive demand.
All in all, it was an extremely informative session and was appreciated by all present.

hi guys,
could you please shed light on the learning experience in great lakes....
i have some questions lined up which go as follows....
what is the common thread/vision/passion that binds all Glakers...
which attributes are most prominent among Glakers...
what differentiates Glake "MBA experience" from others in india and abroad?
how well can a Glaker be acknowledged for oversees (outside campus) placements ?
I have a 3.5 yr experience in research and development, as a chem engineer, not very managerial work, just a tech executive.. do you have similar profiles in your class? how can i get in touch with them? what career path have they taken... you see, i have many a questions lined up... is there any visit that Glake has planned for mumbai aspirants? or kindly suggest me where can i get my questions answered.
the questions asked for essays, are quite unusual wrt other mba essays that i've seen, with a lot of emphasis on character/values/heart... could you please explain the reasoning behind such topics?
thanks for your valuable inputs and time,
regards,
Neha

Hi Neha,
The common vision that binds all Great Lakes is that this is an institute that has the potential to scale heights and we shall do our part to be the instruments of change....the common thread that binds us together is our love and respect we have for the institute....
The most prominent attributes about Great Lakers is each one is an expert in his/her area of domain expertise that he/she brings as part of the previous job which makes the learning experience different and refreshing....and of course, everybody out here is very helpful to each other and we share good camaraderie..
ours is a 1 year MBA which is the biggest differentiator from other MBA programs.....managing time in terms of assignments, exams, projects, extra curricular is a challenge and it gives a high every time we succeed in balancing all these things.....people here come from diverse backgrounds and the knowledge and the thinking they bring to the classroom is something to watch out for.....
Great Lakes has tieups with various other universities like Nanyang, Yale and Stuart School of Business, Illinois......also, next year, we will become a deemed university and we will be autonomous.....we will also be going for international accreditation....which will come into effect retrospectively...this will mean a wider acceptance of the degree we are offering...
yes, we do have similar profiles.....and i can speak about the last batch that passed out and they have landed with good profiles and salaries.....give me sometime and i will get back to you about ppl you can talk to......earlier this year, we had the Meet the Dean session at Mumbai.....if we have any plans of revisiting these places, we will let you know....
In the meantime, if you have doubts regarding your chances of getting the call or application form particulars, you can post them on this thread....
http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...2009-a-52.html (Great Lakes Admissions 2009)
If you have queries about the institute, you can post them on the thread below:
http://www.pagalguy.com/forum/cat-an...chennai-7.html ([2008] Ask Great Lakes, Chennai: Official Query thread feat. Admission Director)
As far as the essays are concerned, these are not your conventional SOP type essays......we all very well know that all the aspirants have a practiced answer to such questions and it becomes difficult to differentiate candidates.....questions about character/values/heart are very subjective and that calls for some interpretation from the candidates.....which is a more accurate way of looking at the competencies such as clarity of thought, ethics, logical thinking, interpretation skills....etc...

Hi There,
Firstly, I want to congratulate you for the great job you're doing!
I had a few questions about GLakes and I hope that you can address them.
1. I see that GLakes has a MoU with Yale, NTU etc. Could you please elaborate on the nature of the MoU and how students such as yourself benefit from the same?
2. Is GLakes looking forward to setting up International Exchanges with the above universities or any other schools?
Looking forward to your reply.
Thanks in advance,
Sameer

Hi Sameer,
As of now, the MoU is strictly of the nature of research and faculty collaboration. The students are taught by the visiting faculty from these schools. Yes, once the new campus comes up, we plan to have student exchange programs too...
